25.01.2022 Sempai or Senpai translates as Senior and can be applied in the majority of situations where someone is senior to you. The following is a very basic guide. Sempai refers to someone who started Karate before you or is senior to you in age, out of respect. It is not a title that is written when signing off a letter or social media post for example Sempai John, Senior Student or is used to introduce yourself. i.e I’m Sempai John. There is a misconception in the western world... that when you reach 1st Dan Blackbelt for example, you become a Sempai. This is incorrect as a 2nd Dan would not call a 1st Dan Sempai. The 1st Dan would actually call the 2nd Dan Sempai, out of respect to that person being their senior. Another example is a yellow belt could call a blue belt sempai and a blue belt could call a green belt. In Seikokai we use only Sensei and Shihan titles. (Of course there is Soke and Kaicho, along with titles Renshi, Kyoshi and Hanshi but that’s another matter) Only people who have received a Shihan licence from Suzuki Soke can be addressed or use the written title Shihan. Hopefully this basic explanation clears this matter up for those who have asked me this question. Colin Punyer, Kyoshi 8th Dan Shihan Australian and Oceania Chief Instructor

25.01.2022 Fond memories 4 years ago I took Soke, Murata Shihan and Setsuko Sensei to visited New Zealand for the first time. Kevin Merriman time flies. Look forward to when we can meet up again. Colin

24.01.2022 A small history lesson, especially for future Blackbelts. 2019 is the year we celebrate 2 milestones for Suzuki Soke, 65 years of continuous Karate practice and 25 years of Seiko-Kai. Soke began practicing Karate in 1954 at the age of 18 under his teacher Sakagami Ryusho (O’Sensei as he was known), whom he was a loyal and senior student of, until his passing in 1993. Almost 40 years with his teacher is a testament to that loyalty. ... Following O’Sensei passing, Suzuki Soke formally established the Seiko-Kai as an independent organisation in 1994 (previously it was Seiko-Kan Dojo, within the Itosu-Kai organisation). Due to the years of dedication from Suzuki Soke, we are fortunate to have a direct link to the founder of the Shitoryu style of Karate, Mabuni Kenwa, via his teacher Sakagami Ryusho. 05.01.2022 Huge Announcement !!! Today Suzuki Soke promoted Colin Shihan to Hanshi. Hanshi is the highest level within Seiko-Kai. ... Colin is only the 11th person and the 1st non-Japanese to receive this honour from Soke. To translate into English it would roughly mean Hanshi () a senior expert considered a "exemplary teacher" or Teacher of Teachers.

05.01.2022 Last practice done, time to head back home. Another great trip. Already looking forward to the next one in November.
