25.01.2022 Great news! Can martial arts be practised? From 11:59pm on 21 June full-contact training and competitions may resume for people 18 years and under.... From 13 July, adults can resume full contact martial arts including judo, karate, Brazilian jujitsu and taekwondo indoors, if you are in a group of no more than 10 people (not including the people required to lead the class) and the four square metre rule is met. Competitions can commence from 20 July. Stay tuned for more details.

18.01.2022 VALE Sempai DANIEL LOCK 6.4.1982 - 16.12.2017 This week we lost the most courageous, spirited and determined karateka I have ever met. Afflicted with Cystic Fibrosis, Daniel encouraged me to begin the Ballarat Goju Ryu Karate Club so that his little brother, Devon could learn Karate. Dan went on to receive his Shodan Blackbelt in 2012. Despite his health being in steady decline he would continue to train when he could and support the club by attending gradings and club... functions. As with all things in Daniel's life, his karate style was unique. I would regularly have to tell him to stop trying so hard! We would laugh together when I would say that he was too strong which made his kata appear rigid rather than flowing in the hard-soft Goju way. He never shied away from a fight and loved kumite (sparring). He especially loved applying take-downs and the sneaky Aikido moves we had learnt years earlier in the Aikido dojo where we first met. Always humble and respectful, he earned the respect of his peers and the senior instructors of Seishikan. One time he was singled out by Kaicho Phil Bates to demonstrate Hiki geri (Chin kick). Kaicho's praise of his near perfect technique brought a smile to Dan's face that was priceless. Dan's sharp wit and sense of humour would make always break through the hard rigors of training. He would bring Doffle, his miniture poodle, along to class on occasions. This was fine until Doffle would start to bark in time with the kiah which Daniel thought was hilarious. We had no choice but to make Doffle an honorary member and our mascot. Daniel Lock, you were a true warrior and an inspiration to all that were fortunate enough to enter your world. We will miss you but never forget you. I was your Sensei but you taught me so much. Rest now and breathe easy my friend. Mark Azzopardi Chief Instructor Ballarat Goju Ryu Karate Club
