21.01.2022 Celebrating International Day of People with Disability. This year’s UN-sanctioned theme is ‘Building back better: an inclusive, accessible and sustainable post...-COVID-19 world’. There’s genuine enthusiasm to take bolder actions to be more inclusive and specifically to find ways to recruit more people with disability. But we all need to contribute to the creation of welcoming and inclusive workplace experiences. More than inclusion, we all want to feel that we belong. That every voice is heard. Where we value and adjust for differences. On this International Day of People with Disability who will you be talking with, planning with, and including in your discussions so that you can ‘Build back better?’ https://www.idpwd.com.au/ #IDPwD #tasmaniasvoiceforepilepsy Australian Network on Disability Disability Voices Tasmania

20.01.2022 How do you feel after a seizure? In the final post-ictal stage, people begin to feel the physical after-effects of the seizure and will often need time to reco...ver. This recovery will vary depending on the part of the brain involved, and the length of the seizure. Knowing this information is important when supporting someone with epilepsy. 14.01.2022 Josh and Caleb are 2 brothers who have Non Consulsive Status Epilepticus. This type of epilepsy presents as prolonged altered consciousness. The boys Mum wrote ...their story for our Facebook Page last year. This is an update to the boys story in Mum's words... "Non Convulsive Status Epilepticus in our boys. Our two boys were born happy and healthy. They are bright with no cognitive or underlying medical problems. Our first started having long confusional episodes (up to 48 hours) at a young age and was finally diagnosed at age 10 with Non Convulsive Status Epilepsy. Our second had post viral symptoms & fatigue at age 9 which then seemed to trigger these confusional episodes. Finally at age 10 this was also captured on EEG as NCSE. Non Convulsive Status Epilepsy is a rare type of invisible epilepsy, which results in absence seizures (presenting as confused/odd and very hard to notice by those outside the family This lead to delayed diagnoses. It was a challenge to get a child to A&E and hooked up to an EEG machine, whilst in this confused state. Both boys responded well to medication, but still suffered with fatigue, headaches and mini absences. Our eldest fully recovered at age 16. We are still hopeful for our youngest. We recently started using Epihunter, which is a simple headset that feeds information into an android app. It makes silent, difficult to notice absence epilepsy seizures visible. It vibrates when there is an absence and then creates a log, giving the time and duration. We hope this will help us monitor the situation from home. This type of childhood epilepsy seems to be under studied and under reported. Hopefully, one day more research can be done!"

12.01.2022 This morning another family shared they knew nothing about #SUDEP until Monday last - when the coroner informed them it was the cause of death of their 26-year-...old son who had lived with #seizures the past 7 years. Absolutely devastating for the family and tragically a still too common heartbreaking complaint of others. Raising awareness + encouraging discussion of #epilepsy mortality risk is paramount. Knowing about #SUDEP and how to reduce the risk is vital information for people living with epilepsy + their carers. Please #SpeakUp2SaveLives this SUDEP Action Day! 07.01.2022 Do you experience focal aware seizures? Focal seizures start in one part of the brain and affect the part of the body controlled by that part of the brain. Th...e symptoms the person experiences will depend on what function that part of the brain controls (or is associated with.) The seizure may involve the involuntary movement or stiffening of a limb, feelings of déjà vu, unpleasant smells or tastes, or sensations in the stomach such as butterflies or nausea. People can have different levels of consciousness during focal seizures. When the person remains alert throughout the seizures and can remember what happens is called a "focal aware seizure." 04.01.2022 Epilepsy is more common than Parkinson’s, cerebral palsy, MS and muscular dystrophy combined, but it is widely misunderstood, rarely spoken about and much stigm...a exists. For example, the majority of people think seizures are convulsive, but epilepsy can take many forms and affect people very differently. In fact, there are over 40 different seizure types. Epilepsy WA has been supporting the WA community since 1963 and we rely very heavily on donations to get by, as we receive no government funding. Please stand with us this epilepsy awareness month and help us to bring epilepsy out of the shadows. Visit www.epilepsywa.asn.au to find out more. See more

02.01.2022 Drop Support is a whole upper body support harness, with a centralised support handle. The Central Support handle helps to distribute the user's weight during Fall Prevention and User Assistance. Drop Support provides more support and user control over standard Gait Belts. We believe it starts with having control over the upper body, and NOT just the waist area. When you have control over the upper body, you're more able to see the impact and difference in these key areas of ...Fall Prevention and User Assistance. https://www.seizurealertaustralia.com.au/produ/drop-support

01.01.2022 EXCITING NEWS: Drop Supports coming soon to Seizure Alert Australia Drop Support is intended to be used with an assistant around the home, going out for walks in the park, walking the dog, going out to the mall, and much more. The key attribute of Drop Support is the support handle. Which allows an assistant to gain better leverage over the user during a fall. This leverage is important in 2 key areas: first, the support handle not only acts like a point of contact between t...he user and the assistant to slow the decent of the fall, but secondly, it can be utilized to alter the direction of the fall. This allows an assistant to more manageable and safely guide the user away from objects that can cause serious injury. See more
