21.01.2022 Say it with me now: there is no one-size-fits-all option! Take the Teacher Wellbeing Persona Quiz to find out 3 ways you can differentiate your self-care and wellbeing practices for your needs. selfcareforteachers.com.au/quiz

17.01.2022 Over the last 5+ years here at Self-Care for Teachers I've focused primarily on individual teachers working on their own personal wellbeing away from school. This was in part because at the time I started SC4T staff wellbeing was largely ignored in schools, and also because ultimately the only person you have control over is yourself. Schools are finally (FINALLY!) waking up to the fact that the grown ups need support with wellbeing and resilience as much as the students do. ... However, as teachers and school leaders are all overworked already, it still tends to fall to the bottom of the to-do list. Or worse still, staff wellbeing is treated like a 'tick box' activity and only tokenistic efforts are made. And yet, in most schools, there's at least one member of staff who is passionate about the health, happiness and resilience of their colleagues and is regularly sharing tips and suggestions to help support everybody. These people are School Wellbeing Champions, and they are true legends. In your school there may be one or more than one, or maybe none (yet - that's where you come in!) What often happens, though, is that because this isn't an official role it becomes yet another thing on an already-busy person's plate. Even if there is an actual wellbeing committee, it's completely volunteer run and there isn't much time, energy or budget allocated towards it by the school. It's an add-on at best. So the Wellbeing Champions who are so passionate about keeping everybody else well come up against a number of challenges in their role: increasing difficulty maintaining their own wellbeing due to extra responsibilities increased amount of emotional labour due to colleagues sharing their struggles increased stress due to low staff morale and an unhappy workplace culture, potentially including colleagues who are critical of any 'hashtagwellbeing' efforts vague expectations from leadership about what the role entails leading to confusion and frustration on both sides very high expectations from leadership about the deliverables of the role with very little support to achieve them no support from leadership and an uphill battle to convince school leaders that staff wellbeing matters at all! Sound familiar? As yet, there isn't a PD that you can go to that will support your role as wellbeing champion, but one day hopefully there will be (I'm working on it!). In the meantime, we are stronger together. We can support each other, share resources and ideas, and expand professional networks with likeminded colleagues. Come to this School Wellbeing Champions Virtual Meetup and let's start to address this, one school at a time! Get your tickets at https://selfcareforteachers.com.au/wellbeingchampion

14.01.2022 The latest episode of the #teacherwellbeingpodcast features Steve Francis from HappySchool.com.au Steve tells us about how his passion for supporting staff when he was a school Principal led him to do a Masters researching teacher stress. Eventually that turned into the Happy School business. ... We talk about the findings from Steve’s research, including the 3 key factors for staff wellbeing in schools. Steve also shares why it's so important that school leaders acknowledge and recognise the good work of their staff. 09.01.2022 Are you the teacher or staff member who is the "wellbeing person" at your school? Are you always advocating for more support for the adults in the school as well as the students? Does your Principal want to address staff resilience but don't really know where to start?... Perhaps no such thing exists yet in your workplace but you like the sound of it and you want to be the "wellbeing person". Maybe there's even a wellbeing committee or staff wellness club in your school already and you have learned a lot about what works and what doesn't work. If any of the above sounds like you, then you're in the right place. Over the next few months I will be creating some more resources specifically to support you in your role (current or aspirational) as School Wellbeing Champion. Starting with another Wellbeing Champions Meetup! Come along to this virtual meetup to connect with wellbeing champions from schools around Australia and New Zealand. The aim is to get to know each other, share a bit about what has worked or hasn't worked in your workplace, and connect with others who may be able to support you in your journey being a school wellbeing champion. We'll meet on Zoom, have a cuppa and enjoy a spot of virtual networking! WHEN: Two options because I know schedules are full and we have timezone differences to navigate Wednesday 10th March at 4pm QLD | 5pm NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS | 3.30pm NT | 4.30pm SA | 2pm WA | 7pm NZ Saturday 13th March at 10am QLD | 11am NSW, ACT, VIC, TAS | 9.30am NT | 10.30am SA | 8am WA |1pm NZ Come to this School Wellbeing Champions Virtual Meetup and let's start to address this, one school at a time! 04.01.2022 An extremely important message from one of our earliest podcast guests, the very excellent Allison Davies - Music and the Brain "Adult meltdowns are something we need to talk about more, I think. Because shame dies when we discuss scary things in safe places! And shame is one of the very reasons our body continues to stay in this heightened state. ... But for now, and until you’re ready to confide, just know that you are not alone, and not doing anything wrong. You’re safe, you’re loved, you’re human, you’re enough xxx"
