23.01.2022 Great to see female athletes doing amazing things.
23.01.2022 HOW TO GET WOMEN INVOLVED IN SAILING - SHE SAILS AWARD WINNER, WENDY WILSON, SHARES HER INSIGHTS Wendy received the Victorian "She Sails" award for her drive, enthusiasm and success at getting more women sailing. She started the SWISH program at Somers Yacht Club which involves a Friday afternoon sail in Pacers followed by a drink and nibbles afterwards in the club. This program has been instrumental in growing the number of female sailors at Somers.... I asked Wendy a few questions about why SWISH works so well. Here is a summary Wendy’s answers. For more detail go to the Blog on our website, Why did you start SWISH? I wanted to share my love of sailing with friends who thought they were not capable of it. Many of them had tried a formal sailing school or sailing with their partners and found it a bit frightening. What format do you think makes it work? We always have an experienced female in every boat. The newer sailors can do as much or as little in sailing the boat as they wish. If there are not enough experienced women, we do change overs from the rib. How does the format suit the women? We only sail in nice weather and are on the water for just an hour. The social aspect is very important. We have drinks and nibbles in the club together afterwards and everyone has a turn to tell the rest of the group about their sail. One of things that define Selki Watersport is our commitment to get more women involved in watersports, particularly where they have been under represented for a long time. Thanks to the drive of people like Wendy, the word is getting out that these are sports are to be enjoyed by everyone!
22.01.2022 In case you have not come across this already.
16.01.2022 It's wonderful to see events still happening! I am sure it will be a great success with hopefully many more to follow.
16.01.2022 A corollary of Parkinson’s Law should be the number of boats you collect is determined by the space you have to store them. Are you a collector of boats? Easy to acquire but very hard to part with? I know there is a few of you out there! There are so many good excuses not to sell. ... Wrong time which is probably true at the moment! You might want to use it some time in the future. It just needs a bit work first. Even sentimental attachment. It’s hard to own up to having 5 sail boats, two kayaks and two boards for two people. How is your collection going?
15.01.2022 Very impressed!
13.01.2022 Are you a lot more active than your mother was at your age? I met a woman who took up bike riding at 70 and 17 years later is still riding on average 120km each week. I think there is a misconception out there that dinghy sailing is for the very young and athletic. Anyone who sails Off the Beach (OTB) Boats will know that's not true! Today, age has become less of a barrier to participation in many sports. Therefore why do so many young sailors leave the sport never to retur...n? Check out our article about getting back to sailing after a break. It is published in the NEW Women Who Sail Australia Magazine. It's free and there are some great articles on a cross-section of topics by Australian Sailing Women. https://issuu.com/sistershipmagazine/docs/wwsa_issue_1_2020
12.01.2022 If you have a bit of time on your hands and are looking for a good sea story, then try "Desperate Voyage" by John Caldwell. The book describes his attempts to sail shortly after World War 2, on a small yacht from Panama to Sydney. He made this trip to be with his recently wed wife, Mary. Not only was the story amazing to read but in the book I found a newspaper clipping about the authors planned round the world sailing trip with his family. Clearly he made it to Sydney!

07.01.2022 Just flicking through some old photos and I came across this one. It dates back to 2008 and shows a learn to sail session Royal Geelong Yacht Club. One of the nice things was that after some land based instruction, the juniors went out for a sail with older Cadet sailors. They were great mentors to these children. There is a lot to be said for introducing young sailors to the sport this way.

02.01.2022 If this year has taught us anything, it would have to be adapting to the circumstances we find ourselves in. With so much dinghy racing cancelled at club level as well as national titles, are you able to shake off the habit, desire or need to use your time on the water to get some training done? Or is it possible to adopt a more leisurely pace and change from racer to cruiser? For many just going for a sail without an objective, can be a new experience. If you have been thinking about how to pack a Thermos on your boat and some nice destinations to sail to, then you are adapting extremely well.
01.01.2022 This is the lovely Jamie Wall who sailed an 49FX at Spring Sail in Geelong last year and allowed me to interview her. I asked Jamie a few questions about sailing this type of boat. What is it you like about the FX? I find it fast and extreme as far as sailing goes. You are in big rush, a bit scared with a lot of speed.... Some People may say the FX is an elite boat. What do you think? To some extent it is. You need to have a good knowledge of sailing, be confident but you don’t necessarily have to be aiming for the Olympics. I know you would like to see more girls sailing generally. What do you think we can do to encourage this? There a few things. It’s got to be social and fun. A lot of girls sail with their friends. Also, more girls need to be active in leadership roles. Thanks, Jamie, for your great insights.
