25.01.2022 P4: What are the popular artist brushes? The eight common artist brushes are flat, bright, round, rigger, angle, filbert, fan, and mop. Artist brushes come in long and short handles as well as in natural and synthetic hairs. Artist brushes are made of four parts: bristles, ferrule, crimp, and handle. Bristles are the hair. The ferrule - a metal bit that connects the hair to the handle - is usually made of wood or acrylic. Crimp fastens the ferrule to the handle. Longer handl...es allow for more gestural work and shorter handles are more suited to detail work. Natural hair brushes usually use hog, sable, and squirrel hair. Acrylic and oil brushes tend to have longer handles and watercolour brushes have shorter handles. Acrylic and oil brushes require stiff coarse hair (usually hog hair) to spread thick layers of paint. Watercolour brushes require fine hair (usually sable and squirrel) for holding liquid and doing washes. Synthetic hair brushes come in stiff and soft varieties that are made of nylon or polyester that can be used with acrylics or watercolour. Brightgood for impasto work. Flatgood for bold strokes and coverage. Mopgood for blending and glazing. Roundgood for outlining and detail work. Anglegood for curved strokes and filling corners. Filbertgood for blending and detail work. Fangood for blending, smoothing, and feathering. Riggergood for fine lines. #sveeriah_brushes #melbourneartist #artmaterials #artistbrushes #artcraft

20.01.2022 P3: What is artist oil paint? Traditional oil paint consists of pigment particles (colour) suspended in a drying oil (binder) that hardens into a tough film when exposed to air. Some common drying oils are linseed, poppy, safflower, and walnut. Linseed oil is preferred for its ease of use and versatility; however, it’s susceptible to yellowing. Thin layers of paint (diluted with solvent or turpentine) touch-dry anything between 12 hours to a week. Alkyd oil paint contains a...n alkyd resin made from modified oils. When dry, the alkyd resin forms a tough film. Thin layers of paint touch-dry within 24 hours. Alkyd oil paint can be mixed with linseed oil to slow drying time and be thinned with alkyd mediums and solvents. Water-mixable oil paint, which has the same vibrant, rich, and lustrous colours as traditional oil paint, contains an emulsifier that mixes with water. Thin layers of paint diluted with water touch-dry within 5-10 minutes. Water-mixable oil paint can be used with traditional oils, but it will no longer be water soluble. #sveeriah_oils #melbourneartist #artmaterials #oilpainting #oilpaint #artcraft

18.01.2022 P6: What is acrylic ink? Acrylic Ink is a fast-drying fluid colour consisting of super-fine pigments suspended in a watery acrylic emulsion. The emulsion dries into a water-resistant film that is permanent. The dried film does not smudge or bleed when layered or rewetted. Acrylic ink uses artist quality lightfast pigments that do not fade or shift over time; they come in a range of opacities. Acrylic ink is non-clogging and can be used in an airbrush and with dip pens. The in...k can be used with other water-based media and is suitable for mixed media work, printing, and stamping. Acrylic ink adheres to a variety of surfaces, such as canvas, board, wood, fabric, and paper. #sveeriah_ink #melbourneartist #artmaterials #acrylicpainting #acrylicpaint #acrylics #artcraft #ink
