22.01.2022 Ok... Some weeks ago it was "Glaucoma" week. If you all missed it then I have outlined some of the latest on Glaucoma that will help you understand better what this eye condition is and how it can affect you or your family. Firstly it is often labelled as " The Thief of Sight". Why? ...because it strikes without warning and by the time you are aware of vision blur it is most likely too late to stop the further loss of vision. It is a disease of the optic nerve and not just ab...out eye pressure. 50% of Australians with Glaucoma are walking around and are not aware of it! Family history is the most important of any genetic factors. 33% of people with a Family history of Glaucoma, are not having eye examinations. Anybody with a family member who has Glaucoma must be screened by the age of 40. People without any history must be screened by the age of 50. Earlier would be better, even as young adults. The problem with Glaucoma is there are no symptoms early on. People think if there is no pain/soreness or blurry vision that the eye is ok. Medically we do not treat blood pressure after the Stroke!. Treatment starts before and Glaucoma is the same, and requires treatment to start before the crisis of vision loss. 40% of Glaucoma patients stop taking their drops after 12 mths because they think they are ok. This is a legacy of they do not experience any symptoms. https://glaucoma.org.au/ That is the website address if you need to know more. Next post will be after Macula Degeneration week.

20.01.2022 I will still be able to continue my Dry Eye treatments at the Wauchope practice. There have been continuing developments in this area and I will post them as they become available.

12.01.2022 Latest news is Flavonoids - in particular oranges could be beneficial for Macula Degeneration prevention. Obviously more needs to be forth coming as there are several sub classes of Flavonoids and Oranges are in the Flavanones sub class. Citrus fruits belong to this sub group. Even more recent and it is still to be released. There has been a long term Glaucoma study near completion and Vit B3 has been noted to be of significant importance. Again we will have to wait on the exact details.
