23.01.2022 Documentation Solutions: Planning for learning, learning to plan Sydney full day professional development Monday 12 October ... If you can only get to one workshop this year about programming, planning and documentation, then this full day session is the one for you, and the team. From noticing the learning and developing meaningful goals, to implementing transformative curriculum planning that flows from your documentation of the learning. Tired of checking boxes, meaningless reflections which nobody is reading, and simply ‘just getting it done’. Tired of feeling like you are simply spending the day filling children’s social media feeds. We will go through the planning cycle and focus on what needs to be done, how we can do it, and what we can let go of. This will be a great session for the leaders in settings as well as it will bring clarity on how they can support their teams in engaging in meaningful documentation processes which support high quality outcomes for all, as well as full accountability. 23.01.2022 APPROACHES TO DATA COLLECTION AND CURRICULUM PLANNING 'Observation enables us to see what children have in fact mastered, probe next to see what in fact they are learning, continue with what in fact sustains their involvement' (Hawkins in Jones, Evans & Renken, 2001, p.3) Conversely, a deficit approach to planning involves educators identifying what children can't do and what children need to learn. Activities and experiences are then included in the program in order to addr...ess these deficits. There is something problematic about such an approach. Firstly, if we are searching for deficits, we can find these in everyone including children. Secondly, this works on the assumption that experiences and activities can save children. However, Dr Pam Winter suggests that we 'start with what's strong, not what's wrong'. Every child has and possess potentiality. Every child has and possess the ability to be a theory maker. Our views of children are powerful predictors on how we approach curriculum planning. Ask yourself, does our curriculum planning focus on children as possessing the capability to test ideas, play with theories and solve the complexities they encounter. Or is our curriculum planning focused on activities aimed at keeping children busy and addressing perceived gaps in their learning and development. Remember we all make choices about our curriculum planning approaches. Let's honour young children and their intelligence.

19.01.2022 Yesterday we had the pleasure of working with the amazing team from The Rumpus Room (https://www.therumpusroom.com.au). We spent the day troubling the ideas and words related to 'behaviour management' (more of that to come in a future post). What struck us was the deep thinking about what constitutes 'curriculum' and how this is defined or not within the early years sector. We spent time in a classroom where children have been hand sewing making pillows, and using sewing mach...ines to make Christmas stockings. Our encounter with this made our heart sing and raised some important questions regarding the need for our work with children to be authentic, meaningful and joyful. We are sharing some photos with you, but ask you to think about how your team defines their work with children, what the word 'authentic' means and how you navigate this rocky term 'curriculum' See more

13.01.2022 Fear isn't always bad. Sometimes it gives us to boost we need to perform to succeed because it can energise us and give us the kick in the back side we need. However, more than likely, fear is that thing that holds you back, that gives others the cutting edge you wish you had. To eliminate fear, it's not as simple as just wishing fear would just go away. It's all about strategy. You need to ask yourself what are you fearful of? Someone in the room is wiser than you and you ar...e fearful they will catch you out? Then prepare yourself and get the knowledge you need to overcome this! Knoweldge really is power. Perhaps you're fearful others won't value you what you have to say in a meeting? Then don't let your self-worth be wrapped up in other peoples opinions of you! Here's the deal. Everyone has and encounters fear, it's just that some people let it define them and carry it around like an oversized bag that won't fit in the overhead locker. For others, they realise when and when not to bring fear along on the journey. If fear ain't your friend in a particular situation then figure out how to control it before it takes control of you. Oh and ps that trendy skirt in the back of the cupboard may come in handy one day so don't throw it out yet. See more
11.01.2022 Always Was, Always Will Be. As we enter NAIDOC week, it's timely to consider what it means to integrate Aboriginal world views and theories into early childhood curriculum. It is also a reminder that a critical part of our work is to not just build the knowledge of children but also the knowledge of the educators and teachers who work alongside children. This may mean some deep soul searching and a commitment to expand your own knowledge, identifying your knowledge gaps and s...ource new information including information that will build a rich and thoughtful curriculum. We want a world that commits to the celebration of difference, that values the history of the land we occupy and the people who came before us. We want to struggle with big questions such as 'How can I make a difference to this world' and 'How can my curriculum move beyond token experiences to learning that changes people'. Remember we may never get it always right, but we need to give it a go. We may be paralysed by uncertainty but let's be fuelled by our politics and share and celebrate with others the wonderful and rich cultures of the Aboriginal people of this country. And remember Always Was, Always Will Be. See more

08.01.2022 Always worth reflecting on Trusting too much in the feeling of being on the correct side of anything can be very dangerous. This internal sense of rightness that we all experience so often is not a reliable guide to what is actually going on in the external world. Register at https://semannslattery.com//1552-look-global-reimagine-lo/ Two global events - the Covid19 pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement - have given us reason to pause and to question what is important for the future of humanity. In doing so, early childhood education has a professional and ethical responsibility to rethink its focus on what is important for young children to learn. Embracing a stronger focus on citizenship and community, we will explore the possibilities of a new lens for both educators' and children's inquiry.
