25.01.2022 CHOOSE HEALTHIER SNACKS AND START TO LIVELIGHTER TODAY.. The time between meals can be a danger zone in our efforts to eat healthy. Hunger, boredom or stress can draw us towards quick and unhealthy snacks. Many snack choices are high in added sugar, saturated fat and salt, and contribute a lot more kilojoules than we think. For example, a café style muffin has 10 teaspoons of sugar and the same number of kilojoules as a small meal. Have a drink of water first. You may actuall...y be thirsty! Craving something sugary? Reach for fruit its naturally sweet and filling and helps you to Live_Lighter See more

25.01.2022 The 17th Joondalup Live_Lighter Aged Care Games was held on Monday 7th September 2020 at Bouncer Sports Centre. Unfortunately only four teams competed due to COVID. Although the number of teams were very much reduced this year, the games were lots of fun and the teams that attended really had a good time. SRCWA State President Phil Paddon officially opened the event and was MC for the games and did a great job, instructing the volunteers and managing the games, thanks Phil.... Jim and Jennys Country provided entertainment before the games and at lunchtime, many thanks Jim and Jenny for their wonderful entertainment. The Best presented team on the day was RAAFA Red Devils- Vivianne Bullwinkle. In third place was Umbrella Red Roses, second place was RAAFA Red Devils and first place was Umbrella Sunflowers. Our oldest competitors on the day a sprightly 97 year old, Maria of Umbrella Blue Iriss. SRCWA thanks and acknowledges the hard work by the team from SRCWA volunteers, Over 55 Walking Assn, Square dancers and individuals who helped to make this memorable event a great success. See more

24.01.2022 WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY The COVID-19 pandemic is causing untold fear and suffering for older people across the world. Beyond its immediate health impact, the pandemic is putting older people at greater risk of poverty, discrimination and isolation. It is likely to have a particularly devastating impact on older people in developing countries. UN Secretary-General António Guterres While this statement may not be true for all seniors in our society it is a timely remi...nder for us to reflect on our actions and words towards seniors. We all have time constraints and pressures in our lives which affect our mood and how we respond. To quote a government slogan we are all in this together should remind us to take a deep breath and let it out slowly and place ourselves in our loved ones shoes. Elder abuse affects many older Western Australians and may involve financial, social, physical, sexual, psychological and emotional abuse. The Government of Western Australia Department of Communities website has strategies and information on support services and resources available to download at https://www.communities.wa.gov.au/strategies/elder-abuse/. Should you know of someone experiencing elder abuse or have any question please contact the Elder Abuse Helpline on 1300 724 679 for a confidential discussion, or contact the WA Seniors Card office for advice on 6551 8800.

23.01.2022 ALCOHOL AND WEIGHT GAIN With the comming festive season a celebratory drink is quite common, here are some hints from the Live_Lighter website. Alcoholic drinks contain a lot of kilojoules and have no nutritional benefits. Over time, drinking alcohol can contribute to weight gain and obesity, which further increases the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes and some cancers.... Its the alcohol itself that contains most of the kilojoules, not the sugar or other carbohydrates as is often assumed. To drink fewer kilojoules, go for a low-alcohol drink rather than a low-carb one. Drinking can also lead to non-hungry snacking (often on junk foods), junk food hangover cures (they dont work!) and less motivation to get out and exercise. Over time, this pattern can lead to weight gain. Cutting down or avoiding alcohol will help you avoid weight gain and improve your wellbeing. Set yourself a limit beforehand and count your drinks. Put your hand up to be the designated driver. Try low- and zero-alcohol alternatives. Make every second drink non-alcoholic. Avoid getting into rounds. Organise social catch-ups that dont centre on alcohol go for a picnic, hang out at the beach or go for brunch. If youre hosting, include interesting and refreshing non-alcoholic options like fizzy water with mint and strawberry slices, or go all-out with a mocktail making station. 22.01.2022 Each year we say this was the best Have a Go Day a LiveLighter Event and once again this year was no exception. Despite the hot weather thousands of seniors (estimated at 15,000) Having a Go made the day go very quickly. There was a lot of interest in all the sites with Crown Perth having masses of seniors inside and at the main entrance to their marque.... Emails and phone calls have been received congratulating SRCWA on a great event, as well as, expressions of Interest for Have a Go Day 2020 a LiveLighter Event. 21.01.2022 Regardless of your age, weight or health challenges, its important to do some form of physical activity every day. Things like gardening, walking to the shops and group activities like dance classes are all good forms of physical activity. Older adults should aim for at least thirty minutes of moderate intensity physical activity each day. Moderate intensity physical activity is energetic but doesnt make you breathless. Brisk walking is a good example. As people age, its important to incorporate resistance exercise too. Modified programs are available at many gyms and community health centres. Live_Lighter have a range of useful resources to help you Live Lighter on their website Like the "Talk Test" pictured below.

19.01.2022 Happy Birthday to our great friend Mick Murray... from all of us at SRCWA.

19.01.2022 On Wednesday 19th February 2020, eighty seniors gathered at Scarborough Community Centre Gildercliffe St Scarborough for a free SCAMS information session. The free information session conducted by Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc in partnership with NBN Australia, Consumer Protection WA and City of Stirling, provided a forum for seniors to learn latest trends, ask questions about the prevalence of scams and how they can take steps to protect themselves. Presenters on the... day were Ashley Merrett Community Ambassador, nbn local, Martin Yates SRCWA Tech Savvy Seniors Project Manager and Merinda Willis from Community Education Team Consumer Protection Division. There were the usual questions about nuisance phone calls, people knocking on doors and banking / credit card security. The recommended course of action with unsolicited calls is to hang up on the caller, should there be some threat or course of action required please refer to a legitimate source of truth eg. If someone calls from the tax office take their name, then look the number up independently from the number they give you and ask to be put through to them. There are strict laws around door to door selling which can lead to prosecution if the sales person doesnt leave the property when asked to do so. Internet banking and financial transactions can be safe as long as you follow rules and remember to look for HTTPS and the padlock in the website address. The main message from these sessions is maintain a healthy level of scepticism and keep at the forefront of your thoughts if its too good to be true then it definitely is. Think before you click is another top hint, read the message or the link before you click on any links in web pages, emails or pop ups. Great food and information. After the presentation a there was a magnificent afternoon tea sponsored by NBN and provided by the SRCWA State Branch. Thank you SRCWA Executive Officer Dawn Yates, Volunteers Mary and Marylyn who worked so hard to make this event possible. Thank you to Carol Kerten from the City of Stirling for your support and hard work on the day. Special mention to Peter who signed ( Auslan ) for 2 hours translating for the hearing impaired on the day. What should you do? Try to maintain a healthy level of scepticism! Should you believe you or someone you know has been implicated in a scam STOP.. call Consumer Protection WA on 1300 304 054 for advice. You can also visit Scamnet for further information and updates on the latest SCAMS. If you would like a free SCAMS Awareness session at your club or group please contact Martin Yates on 9492 9774.

13.01.2022 SENIORS and COVID-19 Coronavirus The McGowan Government has released health updates for seniors regarding COVID-19 (coronavirus). SRCWA encourages all seniors to continue as much as possible to continue normal levels of activity and healthy eating to maintain physical and mental health.... In these times there is a lot of misinformation in the community getting the correct information is paramount in dealing with the issues around COVID-19. We remind you to listen to advice from legitimate Government sources and keep in mind to verify any unsolicited communication from unknown sources. Unfortunately, scammers are taking advantage of the spread of coronavirus to exploit and play on the fears of consumers across Australia. 10.01.2022 HAVE A GO DAY 2020 A LIVELIGHTER EVENT Wow what a day! On Wednesday November 11th 2020, Seniors Recreation Council of WA (SRCWA) held the 28th Have a Go Day in Burswood Park. After enduring months of uncertainty and then two days of terrible weather in preparation for Have a Go Day 2020 a LiveLighter event, SRCWA Staff, Have a Go Day Organizing Committee, and our band of Amazing Volunteers were able to breathe a sigh of relief as it all came together. Thousands of seniors f...locked to the beautiful surrounds of Burswood Park to enjoy the activities and information on display. As it was, Remembrance Day SRCWA collaborated with Victoria Park South Perth RSL sub branch to combine the Remembrance Day Observances into the official opening. It was a very moving service with the last post played by Luis Lim leading into a minute’s silence, not a sound came from the crowds on the grounds. The Kelmscott-Pinjarra 10th Light Horse troop stood guard during the opening ceremony and afterwards joined the Have a Go Day Official Walk lead by SRCWA State President Phil Paddon and the WA Police Pipe Band and Over 55 Walking Association, followed by Heart Foundation Walkers and COTAWA Mall Walkers. A Poppy Drop followed this from a low flying aircraft, where biodegradable poppy cut outs fluttered down from the sky. All the feedback we received from participants at the event was very positive and full of glowing praise for the organisers and volunteers who brought this event to the Seniors of Western Australia. As scammers become smarter and we continue to do more things online its important to understand how you can identify, protect from and report scams so others... dont fall victim. Resources including some of the steps you can take to protect yourself against scams are available in video format on the SRCWA Tech Savvy Seniors Resources section of our website. 04.01.2022 Congratulations SRCWA Peel Branch President "Jan Mc Glinn OAM" on all your achievements and years of dedicated service. Janice McGlinn OAM (Jan) has been a committed volunteer for 48 years, with more than 28 years in the Peel District since moving to Mandurah in 1990. The achievements and accolades afforded in her employed role as Co-ordinator/Manager of the Mandurah City Senior Citizens Centre clearly indicate her level of commitment and service above and beyond the job sp...ecification and her passion particularly for the senior citizens of her community. The fact that her local Member of Parliament was moved to make a statement in Parliament acknowledging her commitment is an honour rarely afforded any person. When the Peel Branch of the Seniors Recreation Council Inc was established in 2002 Jan was involved as a volunteer from the start, initially as Secretary then as Branch President from 2006 till now and has been a driving force in the wide range of activities conducted by that Branch. In addition, she is the Branch Presidents Representative on the Seniors Recreation Council Board of Management. The ethos of Seniors Recreation Council of WA Inc is Healthy Ageing Through Activity and the range of programs conducted by SRCWA and branches around the State are designed to enhance the physical, mental and social well-being of our senior citizens. Jan manages a wide range of programs through the SRCWA Peel Branch and is a regular volunteer in the conduct of the various programs some of which are run on a weekly basis in the Peel Region. The increasing proportion of our population in the over 50s age group, particularly in the Peel Region, places increasing pressure on health and other services - which makes the provision of preventative programs such as those provided by the Peel Branch of SRCWA under the volunteer management of Jan a significant benefit to the community. Tuesday 24th November 2020 we said a big thank you to the Have a Go Day 2020 a Live_Lighter event Sponsors and Volunteers. Due to COVID-19 with new ways of working, the lead up to Have a Go Day 2020 was a challenge to say the least. This... years event was a resounding success and enjoyed by many. Without the generous support of sponsors and volunteers we would not be able to produce such a fantastic and uniquely Western Australian event.
