25.01.2022 We need to change the way we value, interact and talk with people with disability. This begins with us and the words we use to describe people in conversations..., in media, online and in our daily lives. This is a brilliant read from Ellens Agenda. You can see her in the flesh at the YWCA panel tonight! https://www.abc.net.au//helping-your-kids-to-not-/11739256

21.01.2022 You are invited to my ZOOM WORKSHOP from the privacy of your own home - Monday 26th Oct - 7pm to 8.30pm - ‘Dealing with BIG FEELINGS' This workshop brings a c...ollection of practical ideas to coach our children to better understand their BIG feelings. We want them to understand what inspires BIG feelings, how to identify them, what to do and how to work productively with them. Firstly, let's recognise that BIG FEELINGS are normal. We are not born with effective ways to control them. Just as it took you and I a while to learn to regulate them, it will also take this generation of kids the same time. In fact, the parts of their brains that self-regulate emotions will not be fully formed until they are in their mid-twenties. Our job has to be to build our children's capacity to manage to manage them better. So, let me help you shift your mindset from feeling as though you’re having to manage poor behaviour to finding teachable moments to gradually develop self-regulation skills. We value these skills because they are the foundation for resilient behaviours. It's FREE. Limited numbers. Must book. Call Fullarton Park Community Centre on 8372 5180 to get my access code and set-up details so you can join me on ZOOM!

09.01.2022 Looking for the essential goodness in all young people is not always easy, but there really are no bad kids, just kids who are struggling and need our help to k...now better. They don’t wake up in the morning intending to upset anyone, even though they often will. If you’re teaching or raising a child who struggles, look after yourself, reward yourself for your dedication and care, it can be lonely work sometimes. xx Madhavi Nawana Parker #understanding #autism #autismawareness #adhd #adhdparenting #learningdifficultiesawareness #learningdifficulties #dyslexia #trauma #teachersofinstagram #teachersfollowteachers #parenting #sensoryintegrationdisorder

03.01.2022 Some quick ideas to explain SA’s recent lockdown difficulties to children... The far reaching consequences of what just happened in South Australia continue to ...unravel and upset many people. Every time someone does the wrong thing in our world, it’s a perfect opportunity to teach our children the value of doing the right thing... Our children’s curious and beautiful minds are thirsty for knowledge and guidance. We can use other people’s questionable choices as an opportunity to have values based conversations and to ask them ‘what do you think about what happened?’ to let the floodgates of their minds open and ponder the big questions. Whether it’s this situation or others where you see people mess up and do the wrong thing, (because people mess up and do the wrong thing), these are often the most reachable and teachable moments in life - real life examples and observations. Ask questions, get curious, listen to their ideas and watch them grow. Getting more mad than is useful and expressing harsh judgement can close their minds and contribute to black and white views. The good work South Australian’s just put in for each other as well as the extra care our precious frontline workers and government put in to keep us safe is not all wasted. It is exactly the proof our children need that most people in this big wide world are honest, good citizens. When we try and focus mostly on that, it helps young people keep trust in our world and optimism in each other. Sending love to everyone after an upside down, out of the ball park kind of week, we will never forget. Love to all xx Madhavi Nawana Parker
