21.01.2022 Sometimes the making isn’t just about creating pots. Being the tight fisted bloke I am, I make all of the tools for my studio. I’m also a little fussy about how things work. These are bats - important tools of the trade that sit on the wheel. Each piece is thrown on its own bat and stays there till it has dried, ready for turning and finishing. Recently finished 200 to add to the collection. Fun days hanging off a router

20.01.2022 White glaze over raku blend with a nice little iron bleed going on here. Looking right at home in these shots taken and styled by Amy Hagger. Thanks for sharing Amy! @_amy_hagger_ on Instagram

20.01.2022 It’s been a few months since I last posted...no I haven’t been surfing the entire time (one can only dream)! Have been busy toiling away with my hands in the mud. Working on a new little project for The Ritz-Carlton, Perth amongst many other things. Have been working on new glazes too...some successes, some epic fails...that’s how it goes! Look forward to sharing more soon...

18.01.2022 Happy New Year all! Jumping into 2020 with new summer opening hours (below) and a lot going on in studio. Designing and testing new glazes and planning first throwing session for the year. Yeeha!! GALLERY OPEN Wednesday to Sunday, 10am - 5pm Open Monday and Tuesday by appointment only, call 9756 6666

15.01.2022 Winter is the perfect time to make tea pots and even then they put my patience to the test!! Currently making medium and large tea pots - seven different components and processes, with the challenge of ensuring the individual parts don’t dry out too quickly so everything can be assembled with ease. That’s the aim. Back in the swing making 20 or so at the moment....if it doesn’t send me mad!

15.01.2022 As a general rule I don’t make planters but from time to time you have to break the rules! These pieces were commissioned by Vasse Felix for the cellar door and restaurant. I generally work in porcelaneous stoneware, a very white clean form of clay. These pieces are made from a heavy iron bearing clay - meaning there’s a high iron content that in a particular kiln atmosphere will produce a cracking iron bleed through the glaze. These clays were very popular in the 1970s and... are currently having a revival!! Avoiding contamination in studio is top priority so I’ll only work with one type of clay at a time and wash down the entire studio before switching back to pristine porcelain. Thanks again Vasse Felix! Plants, photo credit and featured - the talented rare plant cultivator Scott Baxter Green Form Plant Studio Interior design by Hecker Guthrie.

13.01.2022 Back in February I posted a photo of this piece during the glazing process and promised to post the final result. Well here she is! Copper Red also known as Ox Blood fired to 1300 degrees celcius (cone 10)

12.01.2022 Had a fun chat with Travelletto - delicious travel adventures for this The Margaret River Region story. Link to story here https://www.margaretriver.com/stories-local-hero-the-origi/

11.01.2022 Blossom Jar in Jade.

10.01.2022 Time spent in the spray booth today. For big pieces I generally choose to apply the glaze with a spray gun, rather than the dip and pour method. I find this gives greater control of glaze application and thickness which greatly impacts the final result. Application complete on this piece - destined to be a Copper Red... #pottery #handthrownpottery #glaze #australianceramics #margaretriver #yallingup #dunsborough

10.01.2022 Early morning turning session this morning....Grommies frothing for a surf so at the wheel WELL before my second cup of tea!

05.01.2022 Happy New Year! A special thank you to everyone who has supported me and my work over the years. This year marks 32 years since the opening of my first studio in Quindalup. It was a pretty basic set up - sold my beloved Combi to buy raw materials, my wheel and to build my first kiln. The GREAT sacrifice!! Sensei Pots has had various homes across the years, now at Huntington Court in Quedjinup - a little piece of paradise. Still putting the final touches on my studio (when wil...l it ever end!) but I’m absolutely stoked to have been so blessed to make a living doing what I love over all these years. It wasn’t easy to stay alive in those early days before the boom of tourism but I got lots of awesome uncrowded waves I’m so blessed! Have a great 2019 everyone! HIGH SEASON HOURS (27 Dec - 3 June) Gallery Open 10am - 5pm Wed to Sun Monday + Tuesday by appointment. #margaretriver #australianceramics #pottery #handthrown #lovewhatyoudo #clay

04.01.2022 Recently I’ve been experimenting with a mix of raku and ironstone clays. A big departure from the porcelaneous stoneware and gloss glazes I’ve worked with for over 30 years. It’s good to keep trying new things to challenge my skills. This is one of the first big pieces to come through - a white glaze with some cool iron bleeds breaking through. To be honest I’m still trying to get used to this clay (and the 70s pottery feels!) but it’s growing on me. Peace love and vogels bread man!

04.01.2022 Keep Cups now part of the Sensei Pots collection in Tenmoku + White, Blue + Copper Red, Hares Fur and Jade. Open this Long Weekend! Sat 10am - 5pm... Sun 10am - 2pm Mon 10am - 5pm See more

03.01.2022 Something NEW for lovers of fermenting! Fermentation Vessels perfect for Sauerkraut and Kimchi. Includes in built water seal, and weights. Bamboo handle grown on site outside my studio. Only a limited number available in a range of different glaze colours. DM me if you’d like more information.
