25.01.2022 People with Autism are ambitious. They want to achieve and succeed and to "win" each challenge. This can keep them going even when they need to slow down to rejuvenate. But sometimes it is necessary to slow down. Encourage rest for Autistic children, adolescents, and adults... https://www.psychologytoday.com//doing-more-doing-less-red #nellefrances #sensoryexpert #asd #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #burnout
25.01.2022 The article I shared yesterday got me thinking. There are very specific parts of an Autistic mind that causes someone with Autism to be much more susceptible to cyberbullying. Those with OCD or anxiety may be unable to switch off their device as they may have an insistent, impulsive need to check what is happening. Their rigidity may cause them to struggle with understanding why they are being targeted and why people are acting the way that they are. ... And those that are minimally or non0verbal, or who do not share too much with their friends and family, may suffer alone without anyone being the wiser. Be wise, parents. If your adolescent has a device, then you need to be sure that it is being used responsibly and that they are not being targeted. #nellefrances #sensoryexpert #autism #asd #autismawareness #autismacceptance #bullying #cyberbullying #antibullying
24.01.2022 Making choices is something that all of us struggle with at times, especially with so much to choose from. Making a choice, or choosing, can be something that autistic children and adults find particularly difficult. Too much to choose from can become overwhelming for autistic individuals - each option having it's own pros and cons. We can help autistic individuals to make choices without becoming overwhelmed, by limiting the options to 2. ... This is a great visual reminding you of how to make an "offer" to the autistic person in front of you. Choice helps autistics to feel in control, reducing overwhelm. 21.01.2022 Here is another article by Bits 'n' Bobs Guy. This one is particularly special, as he shares his story about his friendship with Carley O'Donnell, who coordinates the Gympie Region Volunteer Centre. Carley is a major contributor in the community and, in an opinion I share with my employee, she is a very powerful ally for those with Autism who are looking to gain agency and confidence, and even a job, in their community. She is very passionate about connecting all people with ...their community, so I definitely echo what Bits 'n' Bobs Guy said in the article about her being the best person to go to if you are on the Spectrum and want to be more proactive in the community. Trigger Warning: My employee writes briefly about self-harm in this article. He is a visceral writer, so be aware if you are especially sensitive to the topic. #nellefrances #sensoryexpert #autismawareness #autismsupport #ASD #autismadvocate #AutismAcceptance https://www.nellefrances.com.au//autism-growth-and-knowing
21.01.2022 Many of my clients, colleagues & friends have all felt the same... it’s a tough gig when anxiety takes you by surprise like this!
21.01.2022 We rarely see much about Autism from non-Western nations, such as China. It was very saddenning to learn that even more well-off families in China will still struggle to find opportunities for their Autistic family members - the barriers are just that strong!. And more than 20% of families deny a formal diagnosis because of social stigma. But the story is the same there as it is over here - the individual with Autism wants to contribute, and parents want for them to have an i...ndependent future because they will not be around forever. #nellefrances #sensoryexpert #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #asd http://www.sixthtone.com//for-chinese-with-autism%2C-findi.
18.01.2022 The interoceptive system is the internal sensory system. The receptors for this sensory system are located in the muscles, organs and skin. The interoceptive system is responsible for the sensations of hunger, thirst, temperature changes and bathroom needs. Autistic individuals have difficulty noticing their body's interoceptive signals, often receiving signals too late or not at all, so they're already dehydrated or starving before they recognise it's time to drink water or ...eat something. When supporting a person on the spectrum to 'tune in' to their interoceptive system more regularly we should be asking them to check their body signals, as well as clearly directing them "your body needs water now" or "your body needs to eat now", rather than asking "are you thirsty?" or "are you hungry?" #nellefrances #theanswerisalwayssensory #autism #autismsupport #autismadvocate #autismawareness #autismfamily #sensoryexpert #sensorydetective #autismspectrum #autismspectrumdisorder #ASD

14.01.2022 This meme is a great reminder that many individuals weren't diagnosed with Autism and / or ADHD as children. I believe Diagnosis is key to knowing who you truly are; to understand yourself and to love yourself unconditionally. It's never too late for a Diagnosis - people of every age and stage of life can benefit from truly knowing themselves.... The oldest person I have helped to receive a diagnosis was 73. He was ecstactic! The voice message he left me simply said, "I have Autism. I am Autistic!" The elation in his voice told me everything he was feeling. 13.01.2022 Children with Autism often struggle to cope in the classroom. This has a lot to do with how lessons are presented and how instructions are delivered. Autistic individuals can only follow instructions that they can visualise - multi-faceted directions may overwhelm and confuse them. This extends beyond the classroom into home, social life, and into adulthood. Even my Bits'n'Bobs Guy cannot follow layered instructions unless someone shows him or writes the instructions down. ... If it is a trait in adulthood, then understanding needs to begin in the classroom. #nellefrances #sensoryexpert #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #asd #school #learning

10.01.2022 Parents, take heed. Are you truly as aware of your childrens' interactions online and in school? You need to pay attention - but do not deprive them of their sense of privacy and freedom! You may need to take the initiative. If something seems wrong and they seem more sad or angry, then go to them and ask them. straight away. ... 09.01.2022 Many of these cues can present themselves in adults, too. When a child or adult on the Spectrum is fed up, they are fed up - do not fight against them. 01.01.2022 Sadly, the word "Autism" still carries a stigma, even for the parents of children with Autism. One of my worst fears is that parents will hold onto that stigma and ignore their children's unique needs. I was very glad to see in this article an instance where a mother was able to grow beyond that perspective and embrace her son's difference. https://www.findingcoopersvoice.com/20//05/my-miracle-boy/... #nellefrances #sensoryexpert #aspergerchild
