23.01.2022 Farmers, if you’re looking for more tips about how to identify and control Russian Wheat Aphid, you can join a Zoom webinar on Tuesday morning at 9am. The damaging aphid has been found in the Esperance area, the first time it has been detected in Western Australia. Entomologist Svetlana Micic from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) will take you through the aphid’s lifecycle, identification, spread in WA, crop damage and thresholds. 19.01.2022 Grass Patch farmer and SEPWA member John Sanderson will talk about his carbon calculator results tomorrow online and you can join other farmers from across Australia to hear all about it. GrainGrowers is hosting the webinar on Thursday October 15 at 10am WA time to look at the Carbon Calculators report released recently. The project, conducted by Ben White from the Kondinin Group for GrainGrowers, looked at five carbon calculators. ... What does this mean for a producer keen to know what their carbon footprint looks like? Can they be useful for looking at on-farm operations and produce a true picture of the carbon footprint? 18.01.2022 The spring field day season is well and truly underway, and tomorrow (Friday, September 4) the Grass Patch Field Walk kicks off at 11.30am at Ron Longbottom's farm on Swan Lagoon Road. The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation wants you to complete this short survey so they can get a picture of what’s happening across the region.... "Completing this short survey about your farm water situation will help us manage emergency livestock water and community water supplies for the coming summer and autumn. While we continue to accept surveys, we would appreciate your feedback by November 14 to help us plan for water supplies for stock and emergency requirements." 15.01.2022 The State Government has today announced a $3 million accommodation and travel incentive scheme to entice seasonal agricultural workers to regional WA. The program is designed to help regional areas facing labour shortages as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Up to $3360 will be available in accommodation rebates for workers who move to the regions for agricultural work - eligible workers will be able to claim up to $40 a night in accommodation rebates for up to 12 weeks. A ...travel allowance will also be made available to those relocating more than 100 kilometres from their usual place of residence. In the Goldfields-Esperance region, workers will be able to claim $150 for travel. The rebate scheme will take effect from September 21 with more information on how to submit a claim available at http://www.dpird.wa.gov.au/regional-workers-scheme The scheme follows the launch of the 'Work and Wander out Yonder' campaign. 10.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS: $3M FUNDING FOR DIGITAL FARM NETWORK PROJECT State Agriculture Minister Alannah MacTiernan has this morning announced at Speddingup, north of Esperance, that $3 million will go towards the Esperance Digital Farm Network project. The proposal to develop a network for the Esperance region has been more than 12 months in the making securing this funding marks a crucial milestone and puts the region's farmers a step closer to accessing quality business gra...de internet. SEPWA has been heavily involved in the process with many phone conversations and face-to-face discussions taking place with growers, industry representatives and local and state government in the Esperance Port Zone. Communications provider CipherTel plans to build their own network and use some existing Telstra towers and fibre infrastructure to develop a new Fixed Wireless network by bypassing congested satellite and old copper lines. Farmers would connect with a small dish antenna up to 20km from the tower, delivering speeds of up to 80Mbps download and 40Mbps upload with unlimited data usage. Only areas which meet critical interest from local farmers will be developed and SEPWA will continue to keep you updated from here. ** Make sure you tune into the WA Country Hour at lunchtime today because SEPWA president Dan Sanderson will be on the program to explain more. **
