17.01.2022 "To keep the water flowing across South East Queensland, a lot of our attention at Seqwater is focused on meeting the day to day challenges of water supply treating water, maintaining equipment, operating dams In the pursuit of continuous improvement though, it’s vital to plan and strategize for the long-term. This is where I come in as the Strategy and Business Planning Principal at Seqwater. I work with various teams and managers across Seqwater to develop and implement ...strategic long-term plans, with an aim to make significant and lasting improvements to the way we work. It starts with purpose. We need to consider where we want to be, what we want to achieve and set a course to reach our goals. We come together as a business to identify issues and possible solutions to move our organisation forward. There can be a lot of ideas to consider, so we have to decide which ones to prioritise based on what we can achieve with the resources available. A challenge with long-term planning is the unpredictability of the future so you have to identify risks and be prepared to adapt to shifting conditions that could arise. It’s a lot of work and change is never easy but effective long-term planning will go a long way towards further establishing Seqwater’s as a global leader in the water supply industry. I started out as a scientist, with the intention to travel the world with a career in the oil industry. However, this was at a time when the oil industry was undergoing waves of layoffs so I began looking at adjacent industries and was drawn into the water sector. I found water to be a uniquely appealing as it had a combination of social, environmental, commercial and economic implications in a way that few other industries had. During my career I’ve worked in a number or different roles for a variety of water businesses including, Thames Water in the UK, Yarra Valley Water, Brisbane Water now Urban Utilities and Seqwater. What I enjoy about the role I have now, is that I get to work with a wide variety of people across Seqwater and connect different teams within the organisation to collaboratively find solutions to a range of different challenges."

13.01.2022 "Mechanics is in my blood. Among my family there are engineers and technical mechanics my grandfather was the first diesel mechanic in New Zealand. When I was 10 years old, I used to race dirt bikes in motocross competitions and would spend a lot of time pulling the bikes apart to repair and tinker with them. Thanks to a number of enhancements I made, my bikes became the fastest on the track. When I was 16, I did a Certificate II in Automotive Mechanical and really enjoyed ...learning about mechanic duties like troubleshooting and servicing and repairing mechanical components and systems. When the opportunity arose to become an apprentice for the Mechanical Team at Seqwater I decided to apply so I could further my passion for engineering on a practical level. Since being here I’ve had the opportunity to perform a variety of mechanical maintenance work, inspections, repairs and installations across a number of water treatment plants, reservoirs and other operational sites across South East Queensland. It’s great to work at different treatment plants because they are all so unique in terms of the equipment and systems that are used at each site - from the North Pine Water Treatment Plant, which was built in the 70s to the Landers Shute Advanced Water Treatment Plant on the Sunshine Coast. It’s also been invaluable to learn from experienced engineers and tradespeople some of whom have been working in this space longer than I’ve been alive. I finish my four-year apprenticeship this year and am looking forward to becoming a qualified tradesperson and the career pathways it can lead to."

06.01.2022 "As a Senior Project Manager in Seqwater’s Major Projects Team, I oversee multi-million-dollar capital works projects within the organisation’s dams and weirs portfolio. This involves managing teams of engineers and contractors to turn conceptual designs into constructed realities. It may seem like a daunting task with the amount of money invested in these projects and so many moving parts to keep track of, but after 20 years of working in this industry, you develop a good un...derstanding and strong familiarity for what is required to deliver each project. For me, project management 101 begins with breaking down the project scope into smaller, more manageable tasks such as; developing the business case, planning and designing the project through to implementation of construction work. This helps plan the project step by step, determine the component requirements and develop a plan for success. Another thing I’ve learned is to surround yourself with a good team with complementary skills that you can rely on. Lastly, you need to have good management of the construction work by being present on site to make sure the project is completed on budget, to the required scope and on schedule. I’ve been with Seqwater for almost 10 years now. I started out in a consulting role to provide design and technical support to upgrade, repair and improve various water supply infrastructure that had been damaged in the 2011 floods. I am now working to deliver Seqwater’s Dam Improvement Program - a rolling program of dam upgrades across South East Queensland to ensure Seqwater's dams meet national and state dam safety standards into the future. In recent years I’ve worked on upgrades at Leslie Harrison, Maroon, Moogerah, Cooloolabin and Wappa Dams and am now working on the major upgrade to Lake Macdonald Dam near Noosa. Being in a position to deliver projects that really benefit the communities we live in is something that motivates me a lot. I have friends and family who live downstream of some of the dams I work on, and take pride in the fact that I am doing something to make their lives safer, and provide resilient infrastructure that will perform into the future."

06.01.2022 A water supply update for Canungra residents. Whether you are connected to the SEQ Water Grid or live in an off-grid community, with water levels decreasing across South East Queensland, remember to be water wise. Everyone and every drop counts.

03.01.2022 Water-efficient showerheads have a flow rate of 9 litres per minute or less. This #WaterwiseWednesday we show you how to calculate the flow rate on your shower head to check if it's water efficient. 1. Grab a bucket, a measuring jug and a timer 2. Place the bucket underneath the shower, where it can capture the water 3. Turn on the cold-water tap as far as it will go... 4. Hold the bucket under the shower for 20 seconds, then turn off the shower. Empty the water into the measuring jug. You may need to do this several times depending on its capacity. Record how much water was in the bucket. Calculate the flow rate (in litres per minute) by multiplying the number of litres by three. For example, if you collected 8 litres over the 20 seconds, the flow rate of your shower head is 8 x 3 = 24 litres per minute. If your shower's flow rate is more than 9 litres per minute, consider replacing it with a water efficient shower head.

03.01.2022 What's swimming in the water? An emerging technology, which can detect trace amounts of DNA in water samples, has been trialled at Hinze Dam on the Gold Coast as a way to identify the presence of pest fish species in South East Queensland lakes. Full story: bit.ly/3pGRarS

01.01.2022 "The water industry is constantly changing and evolving and utilities around the world are adopting technology to enhance traditional ways of working. Much like a dam or a water treatment plant, technology is an asset we have to manage at Seqwater. In my role as Manager of Digital, Technology and Information Performance, my team and I are working across the organisation to support the integration of technology into different areas of our business, to improve the way we operat...e and to deliver value to customers. It’s a job that requires a lot of research, strategic planning and consultation to understand the needs of the business and identify solutions. Digital transformation can be complex but we want to keep it simple and work with the business to deliver change. Enhancing our workforce through technology has the potential of improving productivity and efficiency. Right now we are developing a digital strategic vision that will help Seqwater meet the demands of our future. I become involved in the water industry in 2006, joining the engineering design team for Seqwater’s Western Corridor Recycled Water Scheme as a consultant. In 2010, I was the Principal Control Systems Engineer at WaterSecure the state authority that managed the Gold Coast Desalination Plant and the Western Corridor Recycled Water scheme before it was merged with Seqwater in 2011. I have been in engineering and technology roles across a range of teams at Seqwater and have been provided lots of different opportunities so that no two years have been the same. I’m proud to be part of the water industry, providing a service to South East Queensland and am excited by the potential we have to continue improving and shaping our services with the use of technology."

01.01.2022 In the past, before health and safety legislation, construction sites could be a risky place to be no goggles, no helmets and no harnesses. Check out these amazing photos of early work being completed on Somerset Dam during the 1930s including images of an Albion tip truck being lowered into the dam construction site via a crane running along a wire! Construction on Somerset Dam began in 1935 but had to be suspended in 1942 when workers were diverted to the war effort. Wo...rk on the dam recommenced in 1948 and was completed in 1953. These historical photos were supplied by Colleen Fitzsimmons, whose grandfather Anthony Fitzsimmons was an auto electrician who worked at the Somerset Dam and lived nearby the site with his family during early construction.
