25.01.2022 Sea trials have begun this week in the North Sea for Australia’s new icebreaker, the RSV Nuyina. The vessel is now 100% complete, with final equipment commissioning and the internal fit-out finalised this month. Testing of the Nuyina’s speed, endurance, steering, advanced electrical systems, and science equipment will take place over the next five to six weeks as the vessel prepares for final sea ice trials in the Arctic early next year.... One of the most advanced vessels of its kind in the world, the RSV Nuyina will form the centrepiece of the Australian Government’s Antarctic Strategy and 20 Year Action Plan. Serco Project Director David Astbury said the milestone represented an exciting step forward after COVID-19 caused delays to the ship’s commissioning this year. To see the Nuyina with engines fired up out on the water is a special moment. Sea trials are a critical milestone where the ship’s capability is tested before final acceptance. The trials will run through to the end of December. The Nuyina is expected to arrive in its home port of Hobart in mid-2021. antarctica.gov.au

01.01.2022 International travel restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic have led to an innovative remote testing trial for the commissioning of Australias new icebreaker. With the build of the RSV Nuyina complete, the project team were faced with the challenge of undertaking the final harbour test; the critical incline experiment, which measures the weight and centre of gravity of the ship. COVID-19 restrictions prevented members of the Australian Antarctic Division and Serco from phys...ically attending the Romanian shipyard to monitor the testing activities, so a remotely monitored experiment was proposed. With the shipbuilders on the ground conducting the vital testing activities, Serco and the Australian Antarctic Division monitored the physical trials using video conferencing technology, survey data and still and video images taken throughout the testing period. It is believed to be the first use of remote monitoring technology for such trial activities in the world. The testing was successfully completed over six days at the end of June. Serco RSV Nuyina Project Manager David Astbury said the team was determined to progress the commissioning activities as restrictions would allow. For more: https://bit.ly/2NYtyNY
