25.01.2022 Well, it’s certainly been an emotional rollercoaster in the last few days. So today I have some sad news, and some hopeful news. Due to the new directives that are in place for metropolitan Melbourne, we’ve decided to reschedule the shows we’ve got coming up. Although it’s possible we’re able to operate under the new restrictions, we’ve had several cycles of yes, we can and no, we definitely can’t. Having shows playing on the first day of these new, uncertain restriction...s is a risk I’m willing to take. So until we have more clarity and can make sure we’re operating safely and compliantly, we’ve decided to take a short hiatus. However, I have a plan! Given what we know right now, we’ve rescheduled Andrew’s and Yianni’s shows for seven weeks time (Tuesday 16 September). We’re going to take three weeks off from performances, and reassess if and how we can continue to present shows. If we can do shows safely and in compliance we’ll come out with a new program for September and October. They may be a slightly different set up until Stage 4 restrictions are lifted, but we’ll work something out. (If you’re a current ticket holder, you’ve been sent an email about all this with more info about your tickets.) Show nights for me and the performers are such a wonderful and happy time for us, so it’s a shame, and all the performers and people we’re working with are obviously sad not to be able to perform, but I think this is the right thing to do. We’ll aim to put some stuff online while we’re not performing so keep an eye out on the Serious Comedy Facebook Page and the Serious Comedy YouTube channel (newish thing but findable here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC4ZXUamFeJRwb4J_SV-71pw). Since April 9 this year, we’ve presented 26 shows and you’ve been part of TWO THOUSAND people who’ve tuned in. Thank you for being so supportive in our new project, it’s been one of the great pleasures of doing it - seeing so many of you enjoying the shows. A few newsletters ago, I posted an article I wrote about the financial effects that COVID is having on the arts and entertainment industry and producers like myself. If anything it’s even more relevant now, so instead of watching a show, please have a read of that. I’ve been told it’s quite enjoyable. You can read it here: https://www.seriouscomedy.com.au/the-business-of-show/ We’ll keep you updated with other fun, non-show content in the meantime, and we’ll look forward to seeing you back in (virtual) person at online shows soon. 23.01.2022 It's the last Servo Bingo tonight. ICYMI: Tune in on Facebook (Servo Bingo or Thirsty Crow) tonight to watch Dane Simpson sit in a pub looking onto a Caltex Petrol Station, and calling out various events at the petrol station which are listed on a bingo sheet. It really does what it says on the tin, and it's heaps of fun. Buy your bingo cards here for $4 (the money goes to different charities and good causes each week) and they'll email you a bingo card in time for tonight's show. Bookings close at 5pm. https://thirstycrowbrewing.square.site/

11.01.2022 [Carrie, FB admin for The Sandman & Flacco / producer at Serious Comedy here again] After my tipsyly enthusiastic post on the weekend I emailed the boys to say that the public have voted and now they HAVE to make something. Here is their official response:

11.01.2022 Another border closure just ahead of Adelaide Fringe. So... A couple of weeks ago I got a call from a friend in Adelaide who manages a quite nice venue. He was asking if I had a show I’d like to put on for Adelaide Fringe as he’d had a late cancellation and a slot to be filled in the venue. Adelaide is a hard festival to put on shows at the best of times. It skyrocketed from having about 700 shows in 2014 to something like 1200 in 2015. (That’s a big jump in the number of s...hows, but I don’t think Adelaide’s population increased at the same rate.) It’s a great festival to see fantastic work, and the people who run the festival are good people. But as producers and artists we work our arses off to get audiences into shows that aren’t TV names. So when I got asked if I had a show I wanted to present in Adelaide, I was flattered but given the time and energy it takes to produce (or perform) a show well in Adelaide, and situation with covid rapidly changing travel restrictions, I was too worried about the risks to say yes. It gives me absolutely no pleasure to read the news that SA is closing the border to anyone from greater Melbourne. As many people in Australia are returning to some sort of normal, the arts and live entertainment are still severely impacted. For many of us Perth Fringe, Adelaide Fringe and Melbourne Comedy Festival are how we earn the bulk of our yearly income. To earn that income we outlay often between $2000 - $10,000 on a modest production of single festival season. I’ve worked on shows that have budgets in excess of $50,000 - and comedy generally has much lower overheads. You don’t get most of that money back if you have to cancel a season. My heart breaks for those people who’ve had to cancel their seasons or operate on venue capacities that have been reduced by 50% or more. Please, please, please remember the arts. Remember the industry of people who kept you sane and entertained while you were locked down. Carrie x https://www.sbs.com.au//victoria-s-holiday-inn-quarantine-

02.01.2022 I learnt German many years ago and never questioned the many words for different types of bags. Finally, someone has put together a handy-dandy diagram of them all, including the wonderful 'Maultasche', or 'mouth pocket' (ravioli).

02.01.2022 Born in Australia, lived 48 years in Australia, but STILL had to apply for an exemption to the white Australia policy... There’s something about this photo of Mrs Jane Mary Low Choy that says it all. Taken in QLD, 1927. @ National Archives of Australia

01.01.2022 While we're taking a bit of a break from live shows, I'll share some of the other projects and things we've been doing pre-Stage 4. A couple of weeks ago Yianni Agisilaou got asked if he could create a short video for Impact Boom's showcase event (they're a company which supports social impact-focused businesses and start ups). They'd just had to shift their entire event online and who doesn't need a laugh break during a conference? So presented for you here is Serious Comed...y's pitch for seed investment. (It was a tight turn around with editing, so you'll need to forgive some of the production quality.)

01.01.2022 A couple of people have asked, so the talented and humble Paul of The Sandman & Flacco has let me put up The Towers Grow Dark album (CD) on the Serious Comedy shop. If you'd like a copy, it's available here: https://www.seriouscomedy.com.au//paul-livingston-the-tow/ Use the code FREEPOST-CD and you can get free shipping (on the CD and any other small item that fits in the same packaging).
