25.01.2022 Whether you celebrate Christmas or not, from our orange family to yours - be safe, be together if you can, and be kind to one another. Take it easy out there. We hope that every person in our community enjoys a well earned break after this roller coaster of a year!
24.01.2022 While an official warning hasn't yet been issued, there is a chance of thunderstorms in our area tomorrow. If you have the chance, it'd be a good idea to take a look at your gutters, downpipes and drains before then. Obviously take care when doing this - get someone to hold your ladder, or ask them to check for you if you're not confident doing it yourself. ... If this does lead to heavy rainfall and you need emergency help tomorrow to repair resulting building damage or similar, call 132 500, 000 if the situation is life threatening. It's well worth spending time preparing if you can
23.01.2022 This latest warning has a bit more yellow on it and we're still in the warning area. There will be another update around 11pm tonight. Don't rely on this page for staying current with warnings - if we're not actually out on the truck responding to jobs, we'll either be in the Incident Control Centre managing the response, or sleeping soundly so we're ready to respond when the calls come in. ... Not much change in terms of expected rainfall and the winds are still pretty strong. If you can, put your cars under cover tonight, don't leave them under trees. Ensure the kids' trampolines are tied down and put away that outdoor furniture. Watch the video we shared yesterday to remember the jingle - Bag It, Block It, Lift It and Leave. As always, if you need emergency help with storm or flood events, we're only a call away. 132 500 - 000 if the situation is life threatening.
22.01.2022 If you follow our page you'll know we started the new year disappointingly, with a person breaking in to our unit and damaging things. Our friends at Upper Yarra have had it worse, having had some vital rescue equipment stolen. But not only is this equipment expensive to replace and completely useless to the thief, but for the volunteers and they people they help, it can quite literally make a difference between life and death. A timely extrication and creating access for ...casualties to receive medical care can make a decisive difference to a patient's outcome. A second set of tools makes a big difference in multi casualty rescues. If you know anything about this theft, or hear of anyone with an unusual new bit of gear, please let police now. You could safe a life.
21.01.2022 If you're looking for a way to work off a few kilos and get your step totals up while helping out a good cause, pop over and have a look.
18.01.2022 CANCELLED - INFORMATION SESSION WED 17 FEB Due to the current 5 day Stage 4 lock down, the Bendigo SES Recruitment Information Session on Wednesday the 17th of February has been cancelled. At this stage we are hopeful it can be rescheduled to the following Wednesday the 24th. The Saturday 20th session is still planned to go ahead unless circumstances change.... Watch this space for further updates.
18.01.2022 Good morning everyone. In light of the current restrictions more information will be available by tonight around the recruitment information sessions booked for Saturday and Wednesday. Thank you to all those that have expressed an interest and thank you for your patience at this time.
18.01.2022 This warning for damaging winds has just been issued for our patch. If Santa brought you a trampoline for Christmas, it's time to tie it down and keep it secure, unless you want to donate it to a neighbour Same for the outdoor furniture and gazebos.... And if you're camping or doing things outside, please don't set up tents or vehicles under trees. Call us on 132 500 for emergency assistance, 000 if the situation is life threatening.
16.01.2022 This warning was updated around 430am and will be revised around 11am. Please be aware of the risk of flash flooding following heavy rain expected today and take steps to keep yourself and your homes safe. Do not drive in flood waters, take a detour and get to your destination safely instead. ... Stay out of Bendigo Creek and other areas that flash flood in our town. Clean debris from your gutters if you haven't already. Check on any neighbours that you know may need a hand with this. If this rain comes and you need emergency help, call us on 132 500 - 000 if the situation is life threatening.
15.01.2022 Our unit teamed up with our friends from SES Marong to put about a dozen of our volunteers through their swim test today at Golden Square Pool. This test is a prerequisite for those members who undertake boating activities and those who perform swift water rescues. Swimming 100 metres and treading water might not sound like much of a challenge but when done in our PPE (personal protective equipment) or at least full length shirt and pants, you sure do notice it! We would rec...ommend not trying it with helmet and steel cap boots...... Thanks to the team at the pool for hosting us and providing the lifeguards, and to our assessors who got almost as wet as the swimmers when a heavy rain squall came through during the test! Nice day for a dip.
13.01.2022 We had a most welcome visitor while we were at training last night. Anthony had a vehicle he no longer needed and he very kindly donated it to us to use in our road crash rescue training. Paul and Jodie were pleased to accept this from Anthony, and they encourage anyone who might have an unwanted vehicle of any kind hanging around to get in touch with us. ... We are always looking for these to practice our skills on, old or new, car, station wagon, hatch, people mover, truck - whatever. If you have one you want to get rid of, message our page. We are able to arrange pick up in most circumstances as well. Thanks Anthony, it'll certainly go to a great cause!
13.01.2022 So very sorry to hear our fellow volunteers have had things that they use to support their community, stolen from them. If anyone happens to come across any items like these for sale anywhere, please tell the authorities. It's not easy to raise the money to buy replacement equipment, especially when the current economic conditions prevent many people from being able to donate.... Pretty awful too if they can't search to the best of their ability for a missing person due to this theft.
12.01.2022 Bendigo has a proud Chinese heritage. Our gold mines attracted Chinese immigrants many years ago, and much of this culture forms the foundation of current Bendigo. We have a fascinating Chinese museum, the Joss House, lion dancers and a world famous dragon in Sun Loong among other things. ... We'd like to acknowledge that rich heritage and wish all a very happy lunar new year in celebrating the year of the ox.
11.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/BendigoAnimalWelfareandCommunit// We wanted to share a slightly different rescue that we helped out with this week. Large animal rescues are not our speciality by any means, but the circumstances of this situation meant we were able to lend a hand. ... When 30 year old ex race horse Connie got stuck and exhausted herself, it was important that she was assisted quickly and safely. Volunteers Darren and Scott worked under the direction of vet Dr Paul, who was able to place a sling around Connie so that our crews could slowly and carefully winch her out. Connie was then propped up on a hay bale until she was able to get herself back on to her feet. She had a couple of minor injuries due to her fall which are being treated. We wish her a speedy recovery and thank the team at Bendigo Animal Welfare and Community Services for the care they provide to beautiful creatures like Connie.
11.01.2022 We're back baby!! After a number of months of only seeing our volunteers when responding to jobs, we started back to face to face training tonight. We also started back at the basics, some scene approach and risk assessment being the order of the night. ... Although we can still see only the eyes, and only small groups, it's great to see the crew again. Stay safe peeps!
11.01.2022 Recruitment Information Sessions have been postponed. In light of the current Covid-19 restrictions we are unable to facilitate the upcoming recruitment info sessions on Sat 20th and Wed 24th of February. The health and safety of community members and volunteers is our number one priority.... Watch this space for future dates and further information as it becomes available. Thank you for your continued patience at this time. In true SES spirit we will get through it.
10.01.2022 This thunderstorm warning has been extended to include Bendigo. We urge you to move cars under cover if you can but not to park under trees. Make sure trampolines, outdoor furniture and umbrellas are tied down or packed away. If flash flooding does eventuate, do not enter it under any circumstances. Let's hope we get some good rain without the hail and floods! If you need emergency assistance call is on 132 500, 000 if the situation is life threatening.
10.01.2022 Totally stole this from SES Upper Yarra Unit - thanks guys! Even during lock down, our volunteers will respond to help those in need. Pretty lights and all!
09.01.2022 Doing what we do, we ask this question of people every day, not just one day a year. And we listen to the answer. It's even more important right now. ... What a year we've had so far. Please reach out to friends, family, professionals, counselling services - anyone - if you need to talk.

07.01.2022 We continued the road crash rescue theme in training last night, this time looking at a number of different stabilisation scenarios. We dealt with a small car on wheels, a raised vehicle such as a four wheel drive, and a car on its side amongst others. We used plastic blocks, wooden cribbing and the Stabfast.... A good refresher run by Mike and Ricky.
06.01.2022 As we move to step 3 in regional Victoria in the coming days, our volunteers will once again be able to undertake training, albeit in small groups and in the open air. We're still working out exactly what this will look like, but there's a good chance you'll start to see us out and about in the community, practising the skills that help us help you. We're also investigating what needs to happen before we can go back to recruiting members. This may take a while but we'll kee...p you informed as we go. We know there's a lot of interest in joining us, and we can't wait to meet you and get you on board! Until then, stay safe and well. See you soon!
05.01.2022 We would wish you a happy new year but honestly we're a bit grumpy this morning. A charming person spent a good hour or so from about 2am at our unit, damaging quite a few items in the compound as well as our fencing. They've attempted to access a number of our training vehicles, to siphon fuel from them and pinch whatever they could from them. ... They then rammed one of the vehicles through the gate, damaging it. We know all this as we're currently watching all the video footage from our security cameras, which is on its way to the police. In the meantime, if you know anything about this, we'd appreciate a private message to the page so we can pass this on to the police as well. Pretty disappointing start to the year, targeting the volunteers who give up their time to support our community.
03.01.2022 Incredibly disappointing for our friends at Axe Creek. If you know something please speak up
02.01.2022 No doubt you've heard that wet weather is forecast later this year, with a La Nina system bringing an increase in the likelihood of heavy and persistent rain. A volunteer from a unit near us has played a big role in developing this catching jingle with a simple message around preparing for flood. Take a look, make some plans, and get the peace of mind of knowing you can keep your home and valuables as safe as possible. ... When floods happen in Bendigo, they are usually flash flooding in nature and we just can't get to everyone in time to prevent damage. You must be able to rely on yourself and those around you. A tip - if you're worried you won't remember all these steps, play it for the kids. The tune is so catchy, they'll sing it back to you. All. Day. Long.
02.01.2022 Experience has shown that if we don't share these weather warnings with you, we get smashed. If we do, often they skip past us. As none of us want to miss watching the grand final tomorrow (or whatever we planned to do with our weekend), we've decided to share the warning in the hope the weather gods are kind and send us only rain rather than flash flooding. ... Please take the warning seriously, make your preparations, be safe and call us if you need help. 132 500 for storm emergencies, 000 if the situation is life threatening. Remember though, flash flooding is often gone before we can get there - you must be prepared to handle things yourself. That tune we shared recently? Bag it, block it, lift it and leave!
01.01.2022 Grade Five students at Strathfieldsaye Primary School have recently been learning all about natural disasters. After learning about floods and the role SES plays in these events they created new slogans and posters for us. We think they've done a fantastic job!
