24.01.2022 KEEPING YOUR BABY COOL | Are you after some tips to keep your little ones cool? Hot weather can affect babies and young children because their bodies cannot adjust to changes in temperature as well as adults. Little ones sweat less, reducing their bodies’ ability to cool down, which means they’re more at risk of overheating than adults. Here are a few tips from our leading midwife consultants at the Royal Hospital for Women, Randwick: - Snacks of frozen fruits (orange quarter...s, slices of pineapple) can provide a cool refreshing treat for toddlers - Lukewarm sponge baths or frequent bathing in lukewarm water can help, remember not to use cold water or ice in the bath - You can keep baby cool by placing wet towels or sheets around their cot, make sure you regularly check they aren’t getting too cold - Air conditioners are a good option however they can cause some dehydration so sleepy babies may need to be woken for extra feeds to keep hydrated, setting air conditioners at 24-26 degrees is cool enough - A good indicator that a baby is getting enough fluids is if he/she has 6-8 pale wet nappies in a 24 hour period For more information visit https://bit.ly/2QqFkCB E-Midwife at The Royal - Randwick Royal Hospital for Women Foundation

23.01.2022 HEALTHY AGING PROGRAM | Robyn Firth was a long time regular at exercise classes as part of the Prince of Wales Hospital Healthy Aging Program (HAP). When COVID-19 restrictions meant classes had to be cancelled, staff sprang into action, creating the Keeping People Connected and Safe Program. To ensure Robyn and her peers can maintain their healthy lifestyles, staff now regularly phone participants to check how they are coping. They ask about access to food and medication, f...lu immunisation and overall physical health. Staff also encourage continuing exercise and discuss any feelings of anxiety or loneliness. No-one knew how long the restrictions would go on. It was important to receive these phone calls, as it was a connection which stopped the feeling that HAP classes had suddenly finished. It felt as if there was light at the end of the tunnel and we could eventually return, Robyn said. At present Robyn is spending her days doing her exercises online, playing scrabble on her phone, and reading English historical novels. When asked about how she will feel returning to the classes, possibly with COVID-19 still around, Robyn did not hesitate to say that she can’t wait to return. She has confidence that our Prince of Wales Hospital staff will do everything possible to keep her safe. To date, Keeping People Safe and Connected has provided over 800 vulnerable patients with contact calls.

23.01.2022 BEAT THE HEAT | Whether you’re planning to take a dip in the ocean or stay home with the blinds drawn and the air-con blasting, make sure you take necessary precautions to stay healthy this weekend. Heatwave conditions are forecast, with temperatures expected to climb into the high 30s or mid-40s over the next few days, so plan ahead, stay hydrated, look out for relatives, neighbours and friends; especially those living alone or who are isolated and stay cool!

22.01.2022 NURSING CARE CELEBRATED ON JANE MCGRATH DAY | While scrubbing off her spray tan following her 27th birthday, Kimberley (pictured left) noticed a lump that turned out to be breast cancer. I wasn’t in the typical risk group for breast cancer and didn’t regularly check myself, Kimberley said. If I hadn’t scrubbed a little harder to remove the tan I might not have found the lump until it was larger and extremely obvious, so my family and I joke that the spray tan saved my life.... An oncology nurse from St George Hospital, Kimberley is no stranger to cancer, but said it is very different being on the other side of it. As part of her treatment and care at Sutherland Hospital, she has the ongoing support of McGrath Breast Care Nurse Kim Wright. Kim is my fountain of knowledge. I really appreciate that she has time to sit with me and debrief after consultations and treatments. This whole process would be much more daunting without her by my side. In the lead up to cricket’s Pink Test, the McGrath Foundation turned the media spotlight on Kimberley and Kim, telling their story to highlight the McGrath Breast Care Nurses’ important work. Today, on Jane McGrath Day, SESLHD is celebrating nursing and the McGrath Foundation which raises money to fund our McGrath Breast Care Nurses who provide invaluable support and care to women and men experiencing breast cancer, from diagnosis right throughout treatment. Visit www.pinktest.com.au to learn more about how you can donate.

22.01.2022 TODAY IS WORLD SIGHT DAY | Did you know that someone who is blind, has poor vision or suffers from eye disease can still become an eye donor? It’s a common misconception that having poor eyesight means you cannot donate your eyes when you die. In actual fact, if your cornea is healthy, you can still become an eye donor to save someone else’s sight. Muffy Churches received a corneal transplant earlier this year, after being diagnosed with the genetic disorder Fuchs Dystrophy.... After quickly losing my sight, one magical hour in surgery changed my life. Thanks to an amazing tissue donor, a damaged cornea was replaced and my heart bursts with gratitude for their beautiful gift. I look forward to returning the favour for others when it’s my turn, said Muffy. A new eye donor app has launched just in time for World Sight Day, developed by Amy Chumkasian, a Sydney/Sydney Eye Hospital nurse and UOW: University of Wollongong, Australia PhD nursing student. Search Eye Donor Australia to download the app for free on Google Play or Apple, and find out if you’re eligible for eye donation. DonateLife

Lauren previously worked in luxury travel, specialising in ecotourism. While this expertise may seem a world away from Prince of Wales Hospital, she said her ability to develop quick repour with visitors has been an asset. Just ...yesterday, I spoke with a family who were leaving hospital after their loved one had passed away, and shortly after that chatted to a couple who were taking home their brand new baby. As the face who people see as they come and go from hospital, it’s really important that I can adapt to individual circumstances, Lauren said. Lauren added: Working in a hospital has opened my eyes to the many walks of life who rely on our healthcare services, and given me a newfound respect for the complex operational systems that ensure the best care is provided. It’s also meant a lot to me to play an active role during a historical pandemic.
