17.01.2022 Kurranulla Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing | Kurranulla now have Aboriginal Social and Emotional Wellbeing Workers in Sutherland & St George. When Aboriginal people encounter the health system they want to be able to talk to Aboriginal health workers. The desire to speak to someone from one’s own cultural background links to the need to be understood and respected.... Special strengths exist in Aboriginal culture, which considers mental health to be part of a continuum that applies not only to individual people but to extended families and entire communities and is not separate from physical health and spirituality. This perspective, which is sometimes described as social and emotional wellbeing, has much to teach all of us as we increasingly recognise the intimate connections between our mental health and our backgrounds, cultures, beliefs and experiences. Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation now have two Aboriginal Mental Health Workers and one Alcohol and Other Drugs Worker to support the community. Their role is to provide culturally safe support for aboriginal people and their families residing within the Sutherland and St George Local Government Areas catchment area. To talk to one of these workers or find out more please call Kurranulla on (02) 9528 0287 https://kurranulla.org.au/

16.01.2022 To mask or not to mask? Sydney residents are being asked to wear a mask when in a public setting indoors such as shopping or on public transport and when visiting health services. Wearing masks have been recommended by medical experts to help protect you and those around you and stop the spread of Covid 19.... But for some of us these devices can trigger strong feelings of being upset, sad, anxious, or irritated when wearing or seeing others wearing a face mask. There are many reasons why you might feel this way. Traumatic memories may be connected to face masks, and there is also the lack of social cues via facial expressionsany and all of which can cause us to go into fight, flight, or freeze survival mode, depending on our own individual trauma history. Melissa Shepard MD on Psychology Today talks about some ways that you can cope if wearing a mask makes you anxious or distressed. She suggests firstly understanding that negative feelings are normal and using breathing techniques, mindfulness and even trying to make mask wearing more fun can help. For more ideas read here: https://www.psychologytoday.com//2/how-combat-mask-anxiety https://www.psychologytoday.com//2/how-combat-mask-anxiety
