24.01.2022 SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST: Almost a month ago we read an incredibly eye-opening and heartbreaking piece in The New York Times by chef Gabrielle Hamilton, who was forced to shutter her revered New York restaurant PRÜNE. It served as a stark reminder of just how tough the hospitality industry is. All the years it takes to survive in the restaurant game, the literal blood, sweat and tears, the non-stop working 7 days a week for decades, always treading the fine line of profitabili...ty. And for it to be all over. In a flash. Just like that. And Gabrielle’s is just one example, one of many, many stories just like it, which we’ve heard and told in past weeks. The story stuck to us like glue. And as we pass our first weekend in Sydney where some restaurants and cafes have thrown open the invitation for their community of diners to return, albeit just 10 of them, only to be faced with no-shows, we wonder whether there will ever be a broad understanding, appreciation and respect for the efforts that go into delivering a great dining experience. We hope so. What do you think?
24.01.2022 NO ROOM AT THE INN: Congrats to Brian and Victoria at iconic Sydney outskirts, all-Australian restaurant Berowra Waters Inn for reopening last week and booking out over the weekend. Can't wait to see the new alfresco bar in action! This dish: local wattle, labneh and native flowers.
24.01.2022 CAFFEINE HIT: Was this ahead of the espresso martini trend? Back in 2012, our director Jasmine Cook came up with the concept of High Coffee - a high tea for coffee lovers - for InterContinental Sydney. In collaboration with Stefano Manfredi an Espresso di Manfredi, she launched the new experience featuring an espresso martini alongside coffee-infused treats, with a hugely successful PR campaign which saw High Coffee selling out for months. It was so successful in fact that other InterContinental Hotels & Resorts around Australia subsequently launched their own High Coffee offerings.
24.01.2022 MASKED AVENGERS: The chefs at Bodhi, making face masks cool since 2020.
23.01.2022 KEEP IT SIMPLE: Sometimes it's the simple things which resonate most and stand the test of time. Like this Archie Rose Distilling Co. Dry Gin and StrangeLove Dirty Tonic. The signature cocktail at Mode Kitchen and Bar, it remains unchanged since the restaurant opened three years ago. There's something very rewarding about getting it right the first time... 23.01.2022 PAUSE AND STRATEGISE: How you react in a crisis can say everything about you, your brand and your business. Finding the right tone and timing for your communications can be tricky to navigate. But getting it right is vital. "How brands appear to the world during this pandemic could impact how people see them for years to come, good and bad, says REED Public Relations founder Lauren Reed, in an interesting article in The New York Times on pitching to media.
23.01.2022 WORTH THE WAIT: It's tempting, isn’t it? To open, to launch, to press go as soon as you can, to start generating interest, enquiries and revenue. But remember, first impressions count. You can't do-over a first impression. We see so many businesses go live before they're really ready: before their strategy is in place, their brand is developed, their messaging is solid. If you rush, you risk not putting your best foot forward, then you'll always be chasing your tail. If it's ...not ready, it's not right - certainly not for long term success, anyway. Make the wait worth it. . . . . . #sevenstoreys #plan #bestfootforward #thebestyou #businessplan #branding #forwardplanning #onmessage #communications #strategy #marketingplan #brandstrategy #planning #beready #newbiz #newbusiness #newbusinessowner #startup #businessgoals See more
23.01.2022 BOOKED OUT: We're trying to book a weekend away in NSW in October... but it seems everywhere is packed out! So wonderful to see people getting out there and supporting local tourism. The Orange region is on our list. Where's your next short break destination? Orange360
23.01.2022 Look out Pyrmont. Things are about to get a little bit more luxe round your way. Via Vacations & Travel
22.01.2022 WEB OF TRUST: Still one of our favourite sites. Both beautiful and highly functional, this website created for Mode Kitchen & Bar has stood the test of time, with only a few tiny tweaks since it launched three years ago, almost to the day. That's a loooooong time in website land (especially for a restaurant!), but it goes to show when a site is planned, built and executed well, it can be the best investment you'll ever make as a business. A job well done by our director Jasmine and the team at Taffy Design, branding and web development partner of Seven Storeys.
22.01.2022 BOUNCING BACK: As luxury hotels, lodges and resorts work their way back to recovery, many are offering sharp deals to encourage locals to stay and play. We worked with popular Aussie travel site Flight Hacks to compile some of the best rates available in each state and territory. There are some absolute crackers in the list... so many in fact we had to do a follow up article!
22.01.2022 VEG OUT: Looking for a place to treat your vegan or vegetarian loved one this Valentine's Day, 14 February?
22.01.2022 ART OF PLATING: We eat with our eyes: first impressions of a final product are everything. And not just when it comes to food. You can put all the work in the world into a project, but if you don’t get the presentation right at the end, you risk its success entirely. Preparation is key. Presentation is everything.
22.01.2022 DETAIL ORIENTED: "Luxury is in each detail," said Hubert De Givenchy. Detail is the ultimate differentiator. When people analyse and reflect on an experience, a product or a service, it's the little things, the finer details which stand out and define it as memorable. This is especially the case in the luxury space, where consideration and appreciation of a product or service always goes beyond price. Like with this delightfully alluring velvet sofa, with its finely crafted tuxedo silhouette with quilted channeling and its delicate gold stiletto pin legs - the detail simply sets it apart.
20.01.2022 GROUNDED: What impact has the Covid-19 pandemic had on the airline industry and the future of frequent flyer programs? Flight Hacks editor Immanuel Debeer shares his insider insights in the final podcast in the Jetlag: The Podcast series.
19.01.2022 WORLD TOURISM DAY: Travel is one of the greatest teachers. It broadens our minds. It delivers us invaluable experiences and education. Tourism is one of our country's most vital economic drivers, generating jobs, investment and growth in areas throughout Australia. The tourism landscape has changed significantly in the past 6 months, and while we are yet to fully understand how it will evolve in the future, it feels as though tourism is valued now more than ever. Absence makes the heart grow fonder, as they say! It's wonderful to see so many Aussies supporting towns and regions in our states and territories by taking a trip. Enjoy your travels! @flighthacks
19.01.2022 BUMS ON BEDS: As they say in the hotel industry - yes, even in the five-star hotels - we need bums on beds. Restrictions are slowly lifting across the country. Let's get this thing back on track! Those in NSW can travel intrastate as of 1 June, and other states and territories will soon follow. So let's start planning that hideaway, getaway, staycation, soiree, escape or break we all so desperately need. Those crisp sheets, fresh towels and room service breakfast in bed have never looked so darn inviting... InterContinental Sydney Double Bay
17.01.2022 YOU'RE THE VOICE: Channel 9's promos for The Voice Australia 2020 brings back memories... a couple of years ago, our Director Jasmine Cook worked with the show to film this series promo at InterContinental Sydney Double Bay. Lots of rigging and a wonderfully talented and generous cast (including a few hotel staff, hey Tuncer Tokmak?) made for a fun few days at newly-opened hotel. #thevoiceau #throwbackthursday
17.01.2022 WE HAVE A WINNER: Flashback to 2015, when our director Jasmine Cook scooped up the highly contested Hotel Management Awards gong for Communications Professional of the Year, in recognition of her incredibly successful work on launching the boutique InterContinental Sydney Double Bay.
17.01.2022 BACK IN BLACK: Electric with excitement to see some of our great restaurants and venues coming back to life... like viking hangout Mjølner where this excellent bloke Joachim Borenius mans the pans - or wields the weapons, so to speak. Support the hospitality industry and book yourself a table at your favourite restaurant ASAP. (In related news, congrats to Alexandra Dahlenburg on her promotion as The Speakeasy Group's first ever NSW State Operations Manager. Keep the whisk(e)y and good times flowing, Alex!)
16.01.2022 FEAST & FAMILY: Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums, grandmums, carers and sharers our there. May your day be full of feasts, like this incredible one from Stockroom restaurant circa 2015. The light is there at the end of the tunnel for us now - Covid-19 lockdown, we can’t wait to leave you behind and get back into feasting with our families and friends at our favourite restaurants! InterContinental Sydney Double Bay
16.01.2022 LIVE ON, WANDERLUST: What we wouldn't give for a few nights squirrelled away at this lutra-luxe camping resort, Sal Salis Ningaloo Reef. If you're in WA and looking for an incredible retreat, Immanuel Debeer from Flight Hacks says look no further. Via Urban List Perth.
16.01.2022 BACKYARD DISCOVERIES: This is one of the most snapped spots in Perth. "But it's just an old boatshed," we hear you say. "What's so special about it?" This little circa 1930s box perched on the Swan River at Crawley was facing the threat of destruction not too long ago, until its owners the Nattrass family decided to give it a bit of a refresh. Back from the verge of collapse and sporting a very smart coat of bold blue paint, the boatshed has since captured the attention of l...ocals and visitors alike, attracting more than 20,000 #blueboathouse tags on Instagram alone. People even line up to take their selfies out front! It's now considered a Perth icon and must-see of the destination. No doubt it's missing its international traveller attention at the moment, but locals are still clearly embracing it, racking up tonnes of tags in recent months. The powerful combination of a visual identity overhaul (rebrand?) and social media strikes again. @krismccombie_
15.01.2022 IN HINDSIGHT: We're reading "Eat A Peach", a memoir from one of the world's most influential restaurateurs, David Chang. It's a fascinating, frank behind-the-scenes exploration of Chang's story to date - his struggles, his insecurities, his shortcomings, his failures, his regrets. He documents his challenges with mental health and examines the ways in which it’s tied to his mistakes and successes. It's written in a way which makes you feel he's unpacking some emotions, and you're a mate just there to lend an ear, to listen. His experience with otherness and inadequacy is refreshing and honest, and resonates with so many of us, especially in business and leadership. Well worth a read.
14.01.2022 TAKEAWAY: A fun challenge for us to write and design this double-sided takeaway card in-house, for Australia's longest running plant-based restaurant Bodhi Restaurant Bar. If you haven't tried their chilled dumplings, ready made and available for pick up, you're missing out. Our favourite? It's a toss up between chilli smoked soy & beetroot and shiitake, truffle oil & asparagus.
14.01.2022 DISCOVER THIS: There's much more to Q Station than meets the eye, as we discovered when doing a rebranding and repositioning project with them recently. If your only experience of @qstation is from a year 6 excursion back in the day, it's time to get reaquainted. You'll be pleasantly surprised at the breadth of experiences: charming accommodation, a private beach, killer views of the harbour, great dining, nature walks, Aussie wildlife, art exhibitions, ghost tours. The list goes on. The rebranding seeks to uncover its hidden gems and beauty, inviting you to discover (or rediscover) all Q Station has to offer. Have you been lately? New branding launching soon. #anewplacetodiscover
13.01.2022 EVENTS ARE BACK: Ok, so groups of 10 don't count as events, but restrictions lifting from Friday to allow small gatherings is a step in an exciting, eventful direction. Talking about the eventual return of events reminded us of these beautiful events packs created for Beta Bar, above Alpha Restaurant in Sydney. A stunning space for weddings, parties and corporate functions. Creative direction and copywriting by our Director Jasmine Cook, design by Harley Johnson.
12.01.2022 JAZZ BE NIMBLE: Not many would think of starting a consultancy in the middle of a pandemic, but Cook is ready to face the challenge head-on, via PRWeek. "Starting up a new brand and marketing outfit in a time of such uncertainty means facing the unknown on a daily basis, making and remaking plans to keep up with rapid change, and working harder to find ways to support businesses in a challenging climate," Seven Storeys director Jasmine Cook said. Bring it on!
11.01.2022 FOR SOCIALS: When you're working with a tight budget - or no budget at all - getting clever with curated content can keep your channels alive. You may just find that your best content creators are your customers! Identify (or create) what is Instagrammable about your product and encourage your customers to engage with it. Like the neon pink bunny ears at Chin Chin. The Figure 8 Pool at the Royal National Park. Or the circular bathtub boasting the best views of Sydney Harbour... here at Four Seasons Hotel Sydney (very popular with social media influencers, as our Director Jasmine Cook discovered). by @eilxrrr
11.01.2022 OVER IT: "I think we’re done with the cauliflower." Owner of Bodhi Restaurant Bar, Heaven Leigh talks vegan food trends with Josh Szeps on ABC Sydney.
10.01.2022 NOSE FOR NEWS: When we found out award-winning chef and owner of Berowra Waters Inn Brian Geraghty had moved his family into his restaurant to make ends meet amid the COVID-19 crisis, we knew it was a story worth telling. And the Daily Telegraph a great place to tell it.
10.01.2022 6 MONTHS OLD TODAY: Back in March when the Covid crisis hit, and hit hard, Seven Storeys was registered as a business. As our Director Jasmine Cook said at the time: What a wacky time to start up a brand and marketing communications outfit. The plan was to help impacted businesses rise again, support their comeback, to help remodel and rebuild, be a part of their evolution. And what a rewarding ride it has been! But it ain't over yet. There's still much to do... Thank you ...for all your support to date. We are here to help wherever we can, now and into the future. Here's to the next 6 months! (If you haven't tried the cocktails at Bodhi Restaurant Bar yet, you're missing a trick. This here "Let The Yuzu Speak" is one of their newbies, and it's alcohol-free. Hello day drinking without a hangover!)
09.01.2022 NO HORSING AROUND: To build the best understanding of a business, you have to immerse yourself in it. Our director Jasmine Cook reflects on an incredible trip to Queensland (via private jet, mind you!) to spend a few days on a remote cattle station. She was there on a research and photography mission (with @andygreenimages) to capture the essense of the station's brand, to then bring it to life across social media, advertising creative and a new website. "A special few days of early rising, cowboy hat wearing, smoko taking and cattle chasing. I had my vocab expanded and my eyes widened. Big skies, big characters with big hearts, and a hell of a lot of hard work. A very memorable experience. And one which gave me a true appreciation for what it was they wanted to communicate... and how to go about it."
09.01.2022 A NEW WAY: Forget the pricey frills of a traditional five-star hotel. Sydney's newest luxury boutique hotel is all about the things you need, and nothing you don't. Due to open mid-year, this tech-savvy, character-filled hotel will feature 88 smartly-designed compact rooms with all your smart stay essentials: super comfy bed, complimentary wi-fi and chromecasting, Nespresso machine, Dyson hairdryer, clothes steamer, singworthy shower and a ready-to-fill mini fridge. And each room features a stunning handpainted mural of native local blooms by Aussie artist Jessica LeClerc. Introducing Aiden Darling Harbour, a new way to stay for the traveller of today.
09.01.2022 CHANGE OF SCENERY: When we can get back out into the world, there are so many beautiful spaces we can't wait to enjoy again, both indoors and out. One of these is the lush dining room of Mode Kitchen & Bar, with interiors by Rachel Luchetti. What makes it even more enticing is the delightful food served up by Francesco Mannelli - possibly the nicest chef in Sydney.
07.01.2022 WHY DO I CARE?: "People don't buy what you do. They buy why you do it." You may have heard this before. It's from Simon Sinek, from his "Start With Why" notion that people won’t truly buy into a product, service, movement, or idea until they understand the why behind it. And thus businesses which enjoy the most success are those built on a foundation of why they do what they do. Do you know your "why"? Does it inform everything you do in your business? Or are you still ironing out the why? There's nothing like a pandemic to sharpen your focus on this one!
07.01.2022 GOLD RUSH: Incredibly sad to see so many great print (and online) magazine titles falling victim to the Covid-19 economic downturn, including a raft of historically significant Aussie glossy mags this past week (Harper's Bazaar, Elle). In designing product moodboards like this one for online luxury furniture boutique, Luxehome.shop, we've been taking our inspo from the beautiful editorial product pages in such magazines. Hoping to keep the look alive in places other than our memories.
06.01.2022 THE BEST BANTS: A fly on the wall listening in on some of the country’s top chef talent talking shit, ah we mean shop, while plating up at the pass. An incredibly hard working bunch who always brought the banter. Mark Stuart Best, Joachim and April running the kitchen of Pei Modern circa 2016.
04.01.2022 DON’T SUCCUMB: This is no time for relaxing (even though that's all some of us yearn to do!). Victoria going back into lockdown this week serves as a stark reminder that this pandemic ain’t over and we still need to keep our guard up (now more than ever). NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian is warning the general public not to get complacent. Complacency is a byproduct of success. In business, it's a silent killer. It threatens to undo all your good work. So don’t take your ey...e off the ball. Keep asking questions of your business and marketing strategy. Keep thinking of new ways to pivot and adapt. Keep communicating with your customers, clients, stakeholders. Keep thinking worst case scenario and planning for it. And if you get stuck for ideas, seek a fresh pair of ears and eyes.
04.01.2022 BALANCING ACT: Eating frogs, ghostwriting, spritzing with lavender and singing The Wiggles... our Director, Jasmine Cook speaks to Balance The Grind about finding work/life balance, almost 6 months into setting up Seven Storeys. #work #business #worklifebalance #wellness #workingmum #covid19marketing #smallbusinessowner
03.01.2022 WHAT’S BEHIND DOOR #2: The past few months have challenged our ability and willingness to change and make difficult choices. Many of us have found ourselves needing to decide which path to take without visibility of what lies ahead and without the luxury of time to mull it over. Only time will tell whether the choices we’ve made will lead to more positive outcomes. How interesting it will be in the months to come to look back on this time and reflect on what we’ve learned, h...ow we might have done it differently - or not. What difficult decisions have you had to make? What crossroads have you found yourself at? Which door would you choose? @sugarandbloom
03.01.2022 PLANT POWER: Never ceases to amaze us how flavoursome, fresh and textural plant-based food can be. The creativity bursting out of the team at Sydney vegan restaurant, Bodhi is inspiring. Take their summer menu for example. We're talking shredded vegan satay chicken salad with mango and a ginger lime dressing; BBQ corn cob strips coated in a sticky espresso miso glaze; and zucchini flowers stuffed with rendang brown rice on a bed of mango quinoa. And for dessert? Vegan mango cheesecake with apricot yuzu jam, fresh mango and cookie crumbs.
02.01.2022 GIN FLING: On the cusp of the gin resurgence, adding fuel to its fire in style, Stillery was born in 2014 as one of the most beautiful bars in Sydney, courtesy of a swank design by @batessmart. It tempted gin curious and enthusiasts with more than 100 varieties of craft, vintage and limited-edition gins, many distillled locally in Australia. But the quirkiest came from further afield. "My favourite was a rare small-batch Anty Gin distilled in the UK with the essence of 62 red wood ants. It was citrusy and delicious," reminisced our Director Jasmine Cook, who created the communications surrounding the gin bar.
02.01.2022 LINE ‘EM UP: We’re currently helping one of our hotel clients with recommendations and connections to Aussie spirits companies, so they can stock their new bar. So many great ones to choose from! The process has reminded our director Jasmine Cook of the time she organised an epic gin dinner with Four Pillars Gin. A different gin was matched to each course of the menu. Afterwards, guests were greeted by this scene: a line up of nightcaps. 'Twas a great night.
