12.01.2022 #FeelGoodFebruary on Fridays! Keeping our focus on the environment, NASA conducted a satellite study and found that the world is literally a greener place than ...it was 20 years ago. We have increased our greenspace across the globe by planting trees, protecting large swathes forests and national parks from industry and incorporating greenery into almost all aspects of our development from roads and transport to building skyscrapers and houses. Mercy Works in Mt Hagen began celebrating World Environment Day 2017. The staff, Mariska, Leo, Alphonse, Danny and Theresia have actively sought to promote this event each year since. World Environment Day is held on the 5th of June every year. To help celebrate this day, the Mt Hagen team invite local groups from all church denominations from primary schools, village youth groups and ‘Shalom Friends’ (People living with HIV Aids) to participate in the day’s activities of planting trees. Planting seedlings gives them the opportunity to watch their work grow over time and to witness the change this initiative is making. The types of seedlings chosen are eucalyptus and bottle brush brought from the Forestry Department. Over three years, they have planted between 25,000 to 30,000 trees, one person for each tree. The Mt Hagen Mercy Works Team all wear green every Monday to promote greater awareness of the damage that is done to the natural environment on a daily basis. Raising awareness of climate change within the community is the key focus and goal of these activities. There are growing concerns that forests that have existed unharmed for thousands of years are at the mercy of foreign companies looking to profit off the resources of the land. This effort and commitment to protecting our natural environment and incorporating it into all aspects of our development have significantly changed our landscape. It is mind-blowing that in the face of industrialisation we have managed to create a greener world - there is still room to improve this! Find Out More Here: https://go.nasa.gov/36RSrTm

10.01.2022 One hundred years ago, Mercy Health was formed through the valiant courage and determination of the Sisters of Mercy. The realisation of their tireless efforts ...were seen on 9 March 1920, when St Benedict’s Hospital opened. Today we celebrate the pioneering women who shaped Mercy Health, like Mother Francis Hanigan, the first Superior of St Benedict’s. Her good management and belief in the power of women ensured the highest standard of care. Join us as we celebrate a centenary of exceptional care. If you would like to share your stories through words or pictures visit our website to find out more: bit.ly/36jo1bx #MercyHealth100Years #YourStory #CentenaryofCare Image: Gertrude O'Bryan on St Benedict's verandah with nurse Margaret Rennie, 1943.

01.01.2022 Regional Mercy Day | Maitland Diocese On Monday 11th November, over 200 Year 4 students from Mercy schools, along with their teachers, gathered at St Aloysius p...rimary school, Chisholm. The event was the inaugural regional Mercy Day in the All Saints Region in the Diocese of Maitland Newcastle. In the program this year, students of St Aloysius, Chisholm; St Paul's Rutherford; St Catherine's College, Singleton; Rosary Park, Branxton and Our Lady of Lourdes. Tarro participated in workshops presented by Helene O'Neill and Maureen Rak. These workshops educated the Year 4 students and their teachers of the life of Catherine McAuley, the projects of Mercy Works and encouraged the children to raise monies for the Mercy Projects. The students are then invited to come together on the regional day following their enjoyable fund raising efforts. The regional Mercy Day was a great day for everyone! The day began with a Liturgy with Scripture and prayers reflecting mercy values. Students led the prayers and received a candle to take back to their schools, with the words: "As representatives in our region, for the support of Mercy Works, may each person here today take this light as a reminder of Jesus' message to us, ‘to love one another' and in doing so, give life to all." Kingsley Edwards from Mercy Works, Parramatta, was our special guest and he spoke to the children of Mercy Values and thanked everyone for their participation and enthusiasm in the program. We were supported by the presence of Sr Patricia Lake, Sr Faith Jones and a volunteer Lee Walz. Following morning tea, the students and teachers enjoyed the open spaces, sunshine and enthusiasm of tabloid games. Good sportsmanship and making new friends were evident!! Until next year!!! Names of those in the photo: Left to right. Sr Faith Jones, Maureen Rak, Lee Walz, Sr Patricia Lake, Kingsley Edwards.
