25.01.2022 A warm balmy evening. The dark storm clouds rolling in from across the Valley. The sun is setting. The blackbirds are making their final attempt at finding their dinner amongst the shrubs - their chirps ring loud in the still evening air. A glorious smell of rain on its way. The hard days work is over and finally there is a chance to sit down and watch the show that nature puts on. Unpredictable nature. Maybe it will rain. Maybe not. Too much and it can cause cherries to swel...l up. Not enough and it’s back to watering the trees. Nature may be unpredictable but there is one thing you can rely on in this Valley. The caring nature and goodwill of our lovely farmer neighbors and friends. Always there to lend a hand. Always there to help if required. What a lovely Valley, what great neighbors and friends. Cheers! Farmer Rob.
25.01.2022 The cold night air, the early darkness, the low sun in the sky, yes, Winter is well underway at Seville Farm. And you could be forgiven for allowing this seemingly dark time of year to get you down but here at Seville Farm we consider it a time to look forward to the brighter and sunnier days of Spring. The low sunlight and darkness may be at their most powerful right now and there may still be many cold days and nights ahead but with the Winter Solstice it’s a turning point... where the darkness will give way to the promise of more light. So let’s celebrate today as a time of balance and with a feeling of optimism for the coming Spring. I can’t wait for the first of the new sweet juicy cherries for us all to pick. Cheers! Farmer Rob.

23.01.2022 The New Year. A time to begin again. A time to try new things. Whether your goals are high flying or a little more down to earth, now is the time to make a start. And so it is the earth that my attention turns. Or rather the weeds that grow upon it and in between the cherry trees. Those pesky weeds the mower can never quite reach. What to do about those pesky weeds? Geese natures mower, this is my New Year’s plan. Buy a gaggle of Geese and they will turn all those weeds in...to fertiliser. My dreams come true! In animal symbolism, to dream of Geese is considered a good omen, a foretelling of success and wealth. In animal totems, the goose means, among other things, to follow your gut, to rely on your intuition and instinct. My gut tells me to give Geese a go. I hope it’s in their instinct to realise my dreams. Cheers! Farmer Rob.
21.01.2022 UPDATE - CHERRY U-PICK OPEN DAY We've had a very busy 3 days picking lots of cherries with lots of visitors to Seville Farm. We will open again tomorrow, Saturday 17 December at 10am for more U-Pick Cherries. I've just finished a walk through the orchard and my best estimate is that we will run out of ripe cherries fairly early on tomorrow. We will have Lapins, Simone and some Sweet Georgia at the crunchy stage. We won't have soft juicy cherries tomorrow. If your after a few kilos of really great cherries and want to bring a picnic lunch then tomorrow will be for you. If your after lots of big boxes then tomorrow will unfortunately not be your day. I will have lot's of those fantastic ready picked blackberries and strawberries from my neighbours. Cheers! Farmer Rob.
21.01.2022 FRIENDS OF THE FRUIT FARMER The White Striped Mastiff Bat A very small diminutive bat. No, not those nasty things that eat fruit! These bats eat small insects.... Like most bats they sleep by day and hunt by night. Endemic to the Yarra Valley we sometimes see them at Seville Farm flying around in the late evening, particularly on warmer days near the dam and over the cherry trees when the insects are most plentiful. These are one of the few bats who’s high pitched calls can be heard by people. Insect eaters yes, these are definitely a friend of the fruit farmer, and gardener alike. Cheers! Farmer Rob.

20.01.2022 FRIENDS OF THE FRUIT FARMER The Reed Bee A bee, native to most of Australia and to the Yarra Valley. They are solitary bees, living alone, not in hives like the European honey bee.... These bees do not make or store honey. They forage for nectar each and every day. Reed Bees nest by burrowing into the soft pithy centre of plants such as reeds, hence their name. At Seville Farm these bees are a very welcome addition to our honey bees as they help pollinate the cherry blossom. You can encourage these bees into your garden by tying bundles of grape vine or rose prunings together and placing the bundles in a tree. Pollinators - yes, these are definitely a friend of the fruit farmer, and gardener alike. Cheers! Farmer Rob. (Image of Reed Bees courtesy of Aussie Bee. Check out www.aussiebee.com.au)
19.01.2022 FRIENDS OF THE FRUIT FARMER The Southern Boobook Owl Australia’s smallest owl. Like most owls, they sleep by day and hunt by night. They have a very distinctive call, sounding like boo book, hence their name.... Endemic to the Yarra Valley we sometimes see them at Seville Farm flying around in the late evening. They are hard to spot as their flight is completely silent. They feed on insects and small mammals such as mice. Munchers of mice and insects yes, definitely a friend of the fruit farmer, and gardener alike. Cheers! Farmer Rob.

17.01.2022 The cherries have now been picked. Christmas has come and gone. The New Year is but a cherry stone’s throw away. It’s amazing to think that 2015 will soon be complete. So we find ourselves making plans for the 2016 year ahead. Not New Year’s Resolutions that will be broken and forgotten. Actual tangible plans that can be worked on throughout the year. And what better plans could there be than to live a good and thought-full life, to minimise the impact of living in our envi...ronment, to undertake every action such that it adds rather than detracts from the harmony of this glorious valley and the people around us, and, of course, to grow the best cherries we possibly can for us all to pick in 2016. Cheers and all the very best for the New Year! Farmer Rob.

08.01.2022 The depths of a cold Winter. Long dark nights and frosty mornings. The Chill of Winter. That sting on your skin when you first go out in the cold. The Winter Chill. A mathematical formula calculating a Chill Factor or Number the amount of Chill required by stone fruit trees during their dormant Winter sleep. The more the Winter Chill, the better and more plentiful are those tasty juicy fruits the following season.... Although the warmer weather seems like a long way off it’s the cold right now that will make for lots of lovely fruit. So at Seville Farm any time we find ourselves wishing for Winter to be over we turn our thoughts to all those sweet juicy cherries in November and wish instead for just a bit more cold. Cheers! Farmer Rob.
