25.01.2022 Today is the 102nd anniversary of the Battle of Montbrehain - the conflict for which George Ingram of Seville was later awarded the highest award for bravery on the battlefield - the Victoria Cross. Lt. George Mawby Ingram, M.M, 24th Bn., A.I.F (Seville) - . Citation for the Victoria Cross - ... 'For most conspicuous bravery and initiative during the attack on Montbrehain, East of Peronne, on 5th October, 1918. When early in the advance his platoon was held up by a strong point, Lt. Ingram, without hesitation, dashed out and rushed the post at the head of his men, capturing nine machine guns and killing 42 enemy after stubborn resistance. Later, when the company had suffered severe casualties from enemy posts, and many leaders had fallen, he at once took control of the situation, rallied his men under intense fire, and led them forward. He himself rushed the first post, shot six of the enemy, and captured a machine gun, thus overcoming serious resistance. On two subsequent occasions he again displayed great dash and resource in the capture of enemy posts, inflicting many casualties and taking 62 prisoners. Throughout the whole day he showed the most inspiring example of courage and leadership, and freely exposed himself regardless of danger'. Hopefully this time next year we can all get together and pay tribute to George with a small ceremony at his magnificent memorial in Seville.
25.01.2022 thank you Tim Fischer for all your support of the Seville War Memorial - RIP
24.01.2022 On the weekend the good people of Bagshot (north of Bendigo), where George Ingram VC, MM was born, unveiled a lovely memorial in his honour. Great article by the Bendigo Advertiser although I'm not sure George would have picked Bagshot over Seville as his home town. https://www.bendigoadvertiser.com.au//tribute-to-digger-/
19.01.2022 #OnThisDay in 1918 2nd Lieutenant George Ingram of the 24th Battalion received the Victoria Cross for his extraordinary heroism at Montbrehain. He later became the first man to command the Shrine Guard.
19.01.2022 Some more terrible news. For a second time in a month an iconic local war memorial has been vandalised. This time the lettering on the historical World War Two CWA Seville War Memorial Bus Shelter has been ripped off. Well done to the Seville Township Group and the Yarra Ranges Council who are working together to have it replaced.
18.01.2022 Between 1200hrs 31/8 and 1200hrs 3/9/2020 Lilydale Historical Society and RSL noticed that historical plague attached to the memorial tree in Melba Park had bee...n stolen. The plaque is made of brass and has been attached to the tree since 13 June 1900. It was a gift to the people of Lilydale. If you know anything please call Lilydale on 97392300 or Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000. See more
10.01.2022 Well I suppose you have all been wondering about our magnificent Seville War Memorial and have been thinking - when will the project finally be finished. To recap - we have spent years undertaking much fund raising and were successful in getting a number of government grants - this took us to the point where we had the memorial designed, the panels designed, engineer works completed, foundations built and the first panel, dedicated to Capt George Ingram VC, MM, erected and un...veiled. There are many individuals and organisations who are responsible for getting it this far and they deserve our thanks. We were then faced with the prospect of raising the rest of the money to build and install the other three panels. That is until the Hon Tony Smith MP made a pledge to the community during the election to find the funding to do this - a promise he kept. As you can imagine, with any government funding, it all needs to go through the proper processes in order for the minister to sign off on it. It has certainly been a long drawn system but we are happy to say we have progressed to the final stage and hope to hear some good news soon. At this stage, pending the final good news and the availability of the construction team, we are hoping it will all be completed later this year. Stay posted....... The photo shows the George Ingram VC, MM panel on Anzac Day - with a wreath created by the Aulich family and a wreath from the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
08.01.2022 We have some terrible news! 120 years ago the people of Lilydale commemorated the relief of Mafeking in the Boer War by planting an oak tree and placing a plaque on the iron guard around it. Going up in 1900 it is the oldest war memorial in the district and one of the oldest in Victoria. For 120 years it has sat there and been admired by generations of residents. Sadly some scumbags have now stolen it!... This is a disgrace and a severe loss to the history and heritage of the Yarra Ranges!! Please keep an eye out for it and if you hear anything about who has stolen it - report these low lives to the police straight away! See more
