23.01.2022 Obesity, overfeeding and dreaded joint problems Obesity is a very common problem in horses. Recent studies report that an estimated 33% of domestic horses are overweight, placing them at a much higher risk of diseases such as Osteoarthritis and / or joint disease. Osteoarthritis remains today’s the leading cause of pain, poor performance, retirement and even early loss of life among our horses. Obesity in horses is most easily avoided when owners control feed and make corr...ect dietary choices. Having said that, as we head further into Spring, green pastures can certainly present a challenge. Grazing management of domestic horses is a delicate balancing act between what a horse wants, what a horse needs and what is best for the land. If we were to let our horses graze freely, it would result in many cases in overgrazed land and overweight horses. Excess weight puts additional pressure on our horse’s joints, wearing them out quicker and contributing to, or exacerbating, degenerative joint disease. This results in pain, inflammation, and degeneration of healthy cartilage cells within the joints. The outcome is reduced stamina and athletic performance, not to mention behaviour changes that can occur due to pain. Even 30kg of excess weight can really make a difference in the amount of stress that an arthritic joint can endure. If you think your horse is overweight, talk to us about a weight management plan. Slow reduction in weight through a managed diet and exercise plan will ensure your horse avoids any complications. For some horses, we also recommend daily inclusion of 4CYTE EPIITALIS Forte gel in your horse’s diet to treat joints affected by inflammation and pain. Our 4CYTE competition is still running, see our previous post for your chance to win a 4CYTE prize pack valued at $250.

23.01.2022 Osteoarthritis WHAT EXACTLY IS IT? Like humans, horses can suffer from osteoarthritis (commonly known as arthritis). And, as with humans, it doesn’t just impact the very elderly. Horses of all ages can also suffer from this incredibly painful condition. So, what exactly is osteoarthritis? As the name suggests, ‘osteo’ refers to bone, and ‘itis’ refers to inflammation. A degenerative disease, it progressively gets worse over time if left untreated.... How common is arthritis? Arthritis is the number one cause of lameness in horses. It can significantly impact their quality of life, dramatically reducing their capacity to be exercised and can even reduce their mobility in the paddock. What causes arthritis? The number one cause of arthritis is wear and tear on the protective layer of the bone, called cartilage. This wear and tear creates inflammation within the joint, leading to pain and further degradation of the cartilage cells. Developmental issues in younger horses, such OCD, poor conformation or bacterial infections, are other common causes of arthritis. That’s why it’s so important to ensure your young horse maintains a healthy weight, is fed a high-quality diet and is allowed to mature sufficiently before being broken in. Keep an eye out for our next post where we’ll talk about identifying the early signs of arthritis, and what to do about them. If you think your horse may be suffering from arthritis, please call us on 03 5799 1441 for a check-up.

12.01.2022 Why is a variety of surfaces important for soundness? Your horse’s ability to perform at his best, and avoid injury, is strongly influenced the surface he trains upon. When choosing your surface, it should be the one that best prepares him for his job. So, an eventer may train on a different surface to a dressage horse. But there are benefits of training on a variety of surfaces for horses of all disciplines....Continue reading

09.01.2022 The Equine Pain Face Recognising when your horse is in pain can be a challenging thing to do. Horses are prey animals and will often mask signs of pain. They may also display signs of pain in ways that are unfamiliar to us, making them harder to recognise. In animals such as dogs and cats, pain is more readily identified and scoring systems for assessing the level of pain in these species have existed for a long time. More recently, a scoring system called ‘The Equine Grim...ace Scale’ was developed to help quantify pain in horses. This led to the identification of the ‘Equine Pain Face’. The ‘Equine Pain Face’ focuses on five key areas of the head: Ears- The ears are lowered and wide on the head, they may sit asymmetrically rather than being forward facing and alert. Eyes- The muscle above the eyes will contract. In some horses this will make the white tissue at the inner corner of the eye more visible. The glance also changes to become withdrawn and tense. Nostrils- The nostrils widen. This is particularly noticeable during inspiration. Muzzle- The lips press together and the chin flattens. Facial muscles- There is tension of the muscles visible in the jaw muscles on the side of the horse’s face. It is important that all horse owners know how to recognise these symptoms of pain in their horse’s face. If you’re scientifically minded and would like to read the original study you can find it here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4312484

08.01.2022 How do we diagnose arthritis? Arthritis can be quickly and easily diagnosed by our experienced team of Veterinarians. We perform a range of physical examinations to assess whether your loved horse or pony may be suffering from arthritis. We’ll ask you lots of questions too so we can get a good picture of your horse’s overall health and any recent changes in mood, stiffness during work or reluctance to perform certain exercises. Often the irregularity in the gait can show up ...more on one rein than the other. Our vets will perform a hands-on examination to assess limb flexion, heat or swelling of the joints as well as a visual assessment of lameness, or ‘trot-up. We may perform flexion tests, and if significant lameness is noted, we may take x-rays of the affected joints. But don’t worry, arthritis can be treated when caught early. We have a range of treatment options to suit every horse. Early intervention will help your horse to continue their athletic career well into their later years.

06.01.2022 What is Epiitalis Forte? Epiitalis is an exclusive active ingredient that’s patented for its cartilage repair and pain relief properties. Epiitalis is drawn from the Chinese healing tree biota orientalis in the form of a plant seed extract. Here’s the best part! Epiitalis has been shown in research to stimulate healthy cartilage production, repair joints affected by age, injury and arthritis, and suppress inflammatory chemicals responsible for poor joint function and ...pain. This ability to positively modify the disease process rather than simply masking pain is what makes Epiitalis such a game changer in the joint health industry. Epiitalis Forte Gel is easily absorbed by the body, highly palatable and comes with a money back guarantee when purchased from Seymour Equine Clinic. Look out for our competition launching tomorrow to win a 4CYTE prize pack valued at over $250!
