16.01.2022 NEW RELEASE WINES Four of Us Wines are the proud project of the Behrakis Family, whose passion for wine has led them to making their own wines for the Salamanca Fresh stores since 2010. The family purchase around 20 tonnes of fruit from a boutique Coal River Valley grower each year and then Frogmore Creek Winemaker Alain Rousseau makes the wine that you see exclusively on Salamanca Fresh shelves. This year they have gone a step further to produce a sparkling wine (traditional method) for the first time as well. You can find the new vintage Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Sparkling in our Salamanca, Davey St, Lenah Valley, Bellerive and Sandy Bay Stores.

07.01.2022 Josef Chromy: Pepik If your name was Josef, and you grew up in Czechoslovakia, chances are your Mum called you ‘Pepik’. Joe’s Mum did. He was just 19 when he decided that, after 11 years of Nazi followed by Soviet occupation, there was no future for him there. He and two mates planned to escape across the border into Austria and make their way to the US Occupation Zone. From there, they would be able to strike out for a life in the new world. The border crossing was terri...fying - minefields, dog patrols, Sovet spies - full-on movie stuff. Joe’s friends didn’t make it. Both were arrested, one shot in the leg and the other never heard from again. It took Joe 6 days, covering 500km, to reach the Zone. He lived hand-to-mouth for 5 months before finally being granted passage abroad as a political refugee. Australia beckoned. Fast forward 70 years. Our regular Joe is now Josef Chromy OAM, one of the leading lights of the Tasmanian food and wine scene. A butcher by trade and a winemaker by choice. His hospitality is legendary. His work ethic is unparalleled. He’s Pepik made good. Pepik is for those nights when the best seat in the house is the couch, with a bowl of something hot and tasty on your lap. Or it’s summer. Then you’ve got a casual cold platter thrown together and someone’s decided that it’s a nice night to be on the verandah. It’s good wine - fresh, fruit-driven, food-friendly and plain old enjoyable to drink. You’ll find all the Tassie headliners - Pinot Noir, Pinot Grigio and Chardonnay. If you want to talk wine, go nuts. The Pepiks are made by one of Tasmania’s most accomplished wineries and have technical jargon to boot. Every vintage is different. What our vineyard gives us, you get in your glass. So top everyone up and spoil them with a bit of Tasmanian love. All three varieties are on special this week in our Salamanca, Davey St, Lenah Valley, Bellerive and Sandy Bay stores.

04.01.2022 All About Rockmelons A member of the gourd family, rockmelons (also known as cantaloupes and sweet melons) are related to watermelons and cucumbers. These medium sized round melons have a rough outer skin and juicy, sweet, slightly musky flesh. The rockmelon that we enjoy today originated in Asia, with its ancestry being traced back by millions of years. There are now two main cultivar groups of rockmelon the European with ‘warty’ skin and the American with ‘netted’ sk...in. The American cultivar is the one that we are most familiar with in Australia and it was first introduced to North America by Christopher Columbus in 1494. Now, the rockmelons that we enjoy in Australia, are grown in Australia! Rockmelons are a rich source of vitamins and antioxidants. They are high in vitamin C, vitamin A and potassium and are also a good source of vitamin K, B vitamins, magnesium, fiber, copper and folate. This fruit’s high water content is also a hydrating bonus when enjoyed on a hot day! Most commonly enjoyed fresh, Rockmelon makes a wonderful addition to fruit and savoury salads, served with yoghurt or ice cream, churned into sorbet, or finely chopped into a salsa. For a refreshing summer salad to enjoy as a side, give this Rockmelon & Fetta salad recipe a try: http://www.salamancafresh.com.au/rec/rockmelon-fetta-salad/
