19.01.2022 During the COVID-19 pandemic, we were able to witness many businesses pivot from normal manufacturing lines into much needed areas resulting from the crisis. One of those organisations was innovator and manufacturer Planet Innovation. Normally they would be designing and manufacturing diagnostic products for global medical companies, however they were called upon to make ventilators during the pandemic. They increased their headcount from 120 to 375 in 2020, increasing revenu...e by 28 per cent. SGH invested in Planet Innovation recently, as well as ve years ago. SGH director and portfolio manager Adrian Di Mattina, said of them: "They’re an Australian-owned, founder-led business that has been consistently winning long-term projects from international clients. If Australia is to grow its advanced manufacturing capacity, this is exactly the sort of business we need to support". COVID has enabled companies like Planet Innovation to show their capability as an onshore manufacturer. As the government looks at the advanced manufacturing strategy, we could see the landscape change in Australia and more opportunities for jobs onshore. 18.01.2022 These are wise words from Harry Cator, director of SGH. He understands the role of a portfolio manager when the market cycle is in a downward spiral - it can be stressful. However, this is when the team can draw on its fundamental processes to stay the course. Harry also reminds us that in these challenging moments, we're witnessing history - always a good time to learn some valuable lessons. Harry has four basic steps he's followed in his career when navigating his way out o...f a crisis: Understand the drivers of the crisis as best you can Establish markers to guide you through the fog of fear once drivers of the crisis are known Communicate clearly to clients Use your experience to execute on your view Our defined investment process at SGH means we have a clear framework to work with. We use that in conjunction with the knowledge and experience of our investment team, to guide us through market cycles like what we've seen. As we continue to navigate 2021 and whatever it brings, you can be certain that the SGH team will be navigating the challenges by sticking to our fundamentals. #InvestmentPortfolio #StockMarket #SGHiscockCompany

14.01.2022 'Sticky clients and assets that are difficult to replicate.' This is definitely the mantra of Callum Burns and the ICE team. When looking for companies to include in the ICE fund, there are some key attributes they are looking to identify as a filter: Need to be a quality business with sustainable growth... They should possess a sustainable competitive advantage Assets are difficult to replicate They have an entrenched market position (clients sticky) Often have pricing power The team have a robust approach for companies to meet their criteria, because they know that it brings more sustainable earnings growth and superior shareholder returns over the longer term. The ICE process has been in place for 14+ years and it's designed to deal with changes in markets or economies. The recent COVID-19 upheaval has certainly shown how important it is to have a robust framework like this. Want to know more about the ICE fund and it's performance? 07.01.2022 Our relationship with China has certainly been on tender-hooks recently, after Australia called for an investigation into the origins of the coronavirus. We saw a swift response by China, when they introduced tariffs on many Australian products. This was on the back of a challenging year for markets during the pandemic. Hamish Tadgell was recently asked his opinion on the China situation and how it might affect our growth recovery: We don’t think it disrupts the growth recov...ery story in Australia, said Hamish Tadgell, a portfolio manager at SG Hiscock and Co. If it started to impact things like iron ore, that would change the view.* For now Australia is in the fortunate position of a domestic economy able to operate with relative openness and policy makers willing to support the economy returning to full employment. We see this as providing good potential for an ongoing economic recovery, and transition from the ‘hope’ to ‘growth’. Time will tell. Need to speak to our team?
