18.01.2022 Butchart Gardens in Canada was originally an exhausted limestone quarry. In 1904, Robert Pim Butchart developed a quarry and built a cement plant at Tod Inlet (...on Vancouver Island). The Butcharts established their family home close to the quarry, complete with sweet peas and rose bushes. As Mr Butchart exhausted limestone deposits, his enterprising wife Jennie made plans to create something of beauty in the gigantic exhausted pit. From farmland nearby, she had tonnes of top soil brought in by horse and cart and used it to line the floor of the abandoned quarry. Little by little, the quarry was transformed into one of the worlds most beautiful gardens. Just goes to show that even the worst plot of land can become a verdant oasis. :) #gardening #butchart #amazing #stonemansgc
