24.01.2022 This week we installed hand wash stations on our trucks, as we prepare to make a soft-start back at work next week. We sure do miss shaking our customers hands by the way - and theyve never been cleaner! Alas, such are the times.

23.01.2022 Heres our first haul of Chestnuts off our 7 year old tree Anyone else had a lame home harvest this season? Show us in the comments - lets cry together

23.01.2022 Lazy Sunday antics

23.01.2022 This will give a better indication of the kind of tree work we may be allowed to do at the moment. Beware any companies peddling business as usual - Evan

22.01.2022 Absolute cracker of a week! So grateful to live and work in such a beautiful part of Victoria. Looks like theres some rain on the way but Spring has definitely Sprung :)

22.01.2022 Winching logs across a private lake in Inverloch today...thankfully they float! :)

22.01.2022 Check out this absolutely epic Wisteria vine we found on a property in Jeetho, growing halfway up a very old 25 metre Radiata Pine! Photos do not do it justice - the trunk of the tree is around 5 to 6 feet wide with the vine trailing up around 10 metres. Unfortunately we just missed it flowering...hopefully we get to see it in bloom next year :)

22.01.2022 One of my enthusiastic young apprentices Ted planting the first of our 1 year old redwoods in front of my office. Looking forward to watching this one grow! - Evan

22.01.2022 Another fine day making sawdust Which ways the wind blowing today bossman?

20.01.2022 I recently salvaged some small bits of exotic timber from an old house and shed were in the process of converting into a workshop. Among them was a short, dirty 2x6in offcut of old growth conifer...probably Douglas Fir from North America. Im fascinated by the story written in wood - the tree this board came from was more than likely hundreds, if not thousands, of years old with extremely tight annual rings averaging less than 1mm. Rather than see it go to waste as kindling,... I ripped it up on the tablesaw, ran the sticks through the thicknesser and diced up some cute stacking blocks for our boys. - Evan See more

19.01.2022 We didnt manage to take any photos of our jobs today - instead, heres an artists impression showing the general conditions... Great weather for ducks!

18.01.2022 Heres a quick timelapse of a teaspoon I hand carved yesterday. Ive just started taking hawthorn herbal tea to help lower my blood pressure... so I thought what could be more appropriate to stir my tea pot? Also made from hawthorn timber, of course! - Evan

17.01.2022 Who can relate?

17.01.2022 The Easter Bunnys been to our place and left us these. Delicious!! #selfsufficient

17.01.2022 What a gorgeous day...just a reminder that Spring isnt toooo far off. One of our laborers, Marcos from Argentina, today remarked that I had "big huevos" (huevos means eggs in Spanish) to be climbing such a spindly tree Made my day! - Evan

16.01.2022 What a fine afternoon we had in this fabulous cottage garden in Jumbunna, giving some very old cypress trees some much needed TLC

15.01.2022 So what does an arborist do in isolation? Rather than add to the hoards of people jamming into Bunnings, today we made our own charcoal as cooking fuel for our kettle bbq. Id call that a success! Hoping for a better yield on the next batch, but not too bad. Check out the pic in the comments for how I cook Kangaroo over coals...

14.01.2022 One of the perks of my job as an Arborist is access to some really beautiful exotic timber. Heres a serving platter and spoon I recently hand carved from a piece of Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) Really lovely wood to work with and highly aromatic. Also good for keeping clothes moths at bay, apparently! - Evan

13.01.2022 Just thought l would share some of my 2020 Holiday photos.

11.01.2022 Something to get us through these dark times

10.01.2022 Milling up some ~140 year old Blackwood this afternoon We're also super excited to announce that we've ordered a wood drying kiln which we should have up and running by mid summer (bank balance not so happy, it cost more than the sawmill!) This means we'll be able to dry lumber to be furniture grade and can therefore start selling some of the really cool logs we bring in. Watch this space :)

10.01.2022 Check this out

09.01.2022 Korumburra - Hows the view?

09.01.2022 After being in iso for over 3 weeks, its just fabulous to come out and see all the amazing Autumn splendour. We are lucky to be able to see the countryside while were out quoting. Speaking of, were managing around 50% of our quotes online without having to visit in person :)

08.01.2022 Tag a plant dag

07.01.2022 Heres a photo I took outside just before. Isnt South GIppsland and the Bass Coast beautiful at this time of year? But seriously, that rain! Does anyone have some rainfall totals to share? - Evan

07.01.2022 Ok so NOW I have your attention... Who can relate - you take some time off work, and then immediately become unwell and cant enjoy it! Let me explain...... A few weeks ago we made the decision to self-isolate. This was in line with government recommendations If you can stay home, you MUST stay home...Wed cleared out our emergency work backlog and we had some money in reserve so we decided to pull our heads in and take stock of the situation at home for a few weeks. We had to make some changes to our business anyway to meet current work health and safety requirements, so this was a good opportunity to do this (install wash stations on all vehicles, obtain hand sanitiser for our crews, adjusting our policies and procedures etc). I also had a tonne of little jobs to catch up around the house and depot. Then I became increasingly unwell - shortness of breath, dry cough, headaches, central chest pain. I am NOT a hypochondriac by nature - hell, I havent been to the doctor for an illness of any sort since I was a teenager. I usually just take my yearly dose of man-flu, complain a lot to my poor wife and plug away. But this felt different, and not something I had experienced as a fit outdoorsy 31 year old. So I rang the Covid hotline. The operator was lovely, but told me my chances are very low despite showing symptoms and not meeting their current criteria. I was then referred to nurse on call. Same story and a lovely operator, but she told me to visit emergency. Bass Coast Health are managing the situation like champions - their reorganisation and sanitation protocols are very proactive and confidence inspiring. So they took me into short stay, masked me up and ran some tests. Blood pressure was higher than normal (for me), chest xray seemed ok, blood tests seemed ok. This week Ive been patiently waiting for the swab results... Yeah sorry to keep you all hanging, they came back negative for Covid-19. But the test can easily throw false-negatives, so were staying-put and taking it easy for a couple of weeks or until symptoms have passed anyway. I still wonder if Ive had it, but I may never know unless they bring out a test for that. The takehome message is - if you are unwell, STAY HOME (just in case)...just pretend you have it, just in case. For now, Im fighting the VERY strong urge to get outside and do stuff like I normally would. Taking it easy isnt nearly as easy as it should be! Dont you worry, Im on the mend and Ill be back to swinging chainsaws in trees soon enough! Again, a huge thankyou to Bass Coast Health for all that they are doing at the moment to keep the community safe, Yours tree-ly, Evan

07.01.2022 So, wheres everyone going for Easter?

06.01.2022 Today we were called in to remove this massive pioneer-era pine in Jumbunna, which once witnessed coal being brought up from the mines on the side of Mt Misery by aerial tramway, and then carted off to town by steam train. It unfortunately died a couple of years ago from a parasitic fungus known as Phaeolus schweinitzii or Velvet Top Fungus (see fruiting body circled in picture). This causes rapid degradation of the cellulose leading to very brittle timber, requiring extra ca...re when felling. Thankfully the property owner stopped removing it themselves and called us As the old saying goes Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance. Another one safety bites the dust

06.01.2022 2020 was supposed to be the year we bought a crane truck to get our sawmill-gig on the road... Then you-know-what happened... Let me introduce you to our OLD Isuzu. Shes been with us a while - shes rusty, rattley and the gearbox is a bit how ya going. We retired her from service a few years ago, and until recently was just a backup truck or used for the odd tip run. Then social distancing happened, so we needed more vehicles. This week we gave her a good scrub and replace...d the old rusted drop sides with some cypress boards I chainsaw-milled a few years back. So there you have it. Are we beating a dead horse? Absolutely. If we can get another year or two out of her Ill be happy. Ps: Give the poor old girl a like, it might make her go faster

05.01.2022 With all thats going on right now, lets all take a moment to appreciate this old Matchbox car thats being consumed by an Apricot tree (spotted today in Korumburra)

05.01.2022 We need your help! Our logo is getting a freshen up for 2020...trouble is, we can't decide which 'tree' icon we like better! If you could spare a moment to leave a comment which you like best - A, B, C, D or E - that would be super. Thanks! :) - Evan

04.01.2022 Quarantine day 5: Steam cleaning our old Isuzu. Oh...my..god. Makes us look like a bunch of grots... lol. Check out those clean bits on the left, almost as good as new! Todays mission...doing my GST, wish me luck! - Evan

03.01.2022 Where on earth are we this week? Probably one of the biggest cypress removals weve ever done (well over 4m trunk diameter) this insurance removal flattened a hay shed, leaving the remaining stems serverely cracked and unstable. Shame to remove such an old tree, but there really was no other feasible option.
