She wrote to him: Deni, As someone who has been alongside your progress since you were 16, I can speak from the personal perspective in saying how hard you’ve worked and what an incredible path you’ve taken. There is no greater pride for me than to have helped you along this special path and to watch from the front row how you’ve seized the moment and are making history. My blessing to you is that you should only continue to grow and succeed. I believe in you with all my heart. Rakefet Photo Credit: Ogen Amos

14.01.2022 Corona Twins... A 25 year-old Jerusalem woman recently arrived in our specially dedicated Corona maternity ward 34 weeks pregnant and presenting with heavy cont...ractions. The staff determined she was in an active stage of childbirth and was immediately transferred to a delivery room set up exclusively for Corona patients. After several hours of close monitoring, a multi-departmental team naturally delivered twins weighing 1.74 kg (3.82lbs) and 1.73 kg (3.8lbs). Dr. Netanel Wasserteil, a Senior Obstetrician in the Wilf Woman and Infant Center said, The birth of twins is always cause for excitement, but also comes with potential for complications particularly at an early stage of the pregnancy. We therefore were prepared for all types of issues but also worked with our team to ensure that the birth would be a positive experience for the family. Immediately after determining that the infants were in stable condition we allowed the parents, including the father who had suited up for the occasion, to hold their babies. Rinat Dvir and Efrat Herling, head midwives in the department said, The mother had been suffering from COVID-19 symptoms including high fever and trouble breathing but was in generally good condition and the birth went ahead nicely. We immediately assessed the twins and saw that all their vital signs were good. We are seeing a growing number of expectant women who are delivering well before their due dates but we're all working to better understand the exact reason for this trend and to be best prepared to respond accordingly. The proud parents summed up their experience saying, We certainly didn’t plan this type of birth but the staff did everything so that it would be a positive birthing experience. We are very grateful to the Shaare Zedek medical team who helped us through this challenging time and we all look forward returning to our normal lives very soon.

14.01.2022 Shaare Zedek Medical Center is proud to congratulate Professor Jonathan Halevy on the announcement that he will be honored as a Yakir Yerushalayim (Worthy Citiz...en of Jerusalem.) This annual award, to be presented on Jerusalem Day by the Municipality, is recognized as the city’s highest civilian honor and was dedicated this year to representatives of the healthcare community who have played key roles in fighting COVID-19. Professor Halevy responded to the announcement saying, Even while I wasn’t born here in Jerusalem, I came to the city 33 years ago to direct Shaare Zedek and two years ago I was honored to be appointed President of the Medical Center as Professor Ofer Merin accepted the role of Director General. Jerusalem is deeply special for me. It’s here that I raised my children and it is with great honor that I will recieve this recognition. Shaare Zedek is a hospital offering the wide array of modern medical services and I take particular pride that we have succeeded in attracting many leading doctors from all across Israel and even abroad to serve our hospital. I firmly believe this has significantly contributed to the development of Jerusalem as an international center of advanced and compassionate clinical medicine and research. In receiving this award I am proud to also be representing my 5,000 fellow employees of Shaare Zedek and in particular I salute the remarkable devotion they have invested in this challenging period defined by Corona.

14.01.2022 New 60- Bed Corona Unit Officially Opens at Shaare Zedek After an intensive construction effort, Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek Medical Center has officially opened i...ts new dedicated Corona Unit. The Unit is made up of 60 individual patient bed stations and is housed in an area of the hospital that formerly served as the staff cafeteria. Designed and equipped based on Shaare Zedek’s growing understanding of how to best treat COVID-19 patients, the Unit includes areas for various types of cases including intensive care, dialysis and a special area for women with Corona who have just given birth. The need for a dedicated unit became apparent to hospital administrators very early on in the first wave of the pandemic in March 2020. With the understanding that combatting Corona would be an effort that would span many months and require extensive hospital resources, the planners identified the 700 square meter area that could be adapted for this purpose in a relatively short amount of time. We put extensive thought and effort into how we could create a Unit that would best respond to the growing needs presented by COVID-19 to the Jerusalem area, explains Shaare Zedek Director General Professor Ofer Merin. Developing this facility required no small amount of degree of imagination and foresight as just several months ago this area was being used daily to feed our staff. The reality is that it will be some time before we will be able to all eat together in a cafeteria setting so we have all worked hard towards the goal of adapting this space for this critical function. The new Unit is located in an area of the hospital on its third floor that is completely separated from other patient-care areas but also is easily accessible for admitting new patients. The Unit has been outfitted with a large investment of new equipment that enables it to care for patients of all degrees of severity as well as patients with other pre-existing conditions that will require dedicated care. Tamar Keynan, Director of Nursing for the Internal Medicine Division said this development is an important step forward both for the patients and the medical staff. There is a definite feeling of excitement and responsibility with this opening. The COVID-19 care teams come from all over the hospital and our previous Corona care facilities were other areas of the hospital that had been quickly repurposed. As a dedicated COVID-19 facility that was designed from the outset for this purpose this is an advanced treatment center with new equipment that can be best used for the very specific needs of these challenging cases. I know that our medical teams welcome the chance to use this new facility to provide the best possible care and be even better prepared for the continued challenges that we know lie ahead.

11.01.2022 The Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery of the Helmsley Neurological Institute sees its fair share of dramatic cases. But one recent patient was described by ...the Department Director, Dr. Gustavo Rajz as the type of thing doctors see maybe only once in a decade. The story began about a month ago when a local Jerusalem couple noticed that their infant son’s head had taken on an awkward shape. They brought the child to their pediatrician who ordered an ultrasound to better understand the problem. The scan was performed by Dr. Elena Zharkov, a pediatric neuro-radiologist in the Wilf Childrens Hospital who identified a life-threatening mass in the child’s brain. He was immediately sent to the Glaubach Pediatric Emergency Department where he was brought under the care of Dr. Rajz. The follow-up CT revealed that without a question he was in imminent danger as the mass was pushing up against the brain stem. With little time to lose, he was admitted for an emergency surgery led by Dr. Rajz alongside a team of senior surgeons including Dr. John Winestone, Dr. Henry Shapiro and Dr. Nevo Margalit, Shaare Zedek's Director of Neurosurgery . After hours of an intense and complex operation, the team saw that this was far from a routine case. The mass was made up of fetal remnants including hair, tissue and even teeth. This is an extremely rare type of mass that we see maybe once a decade,Dr. Rajz said. We responded very quickly because we saw the pressure on the brain stem and a build-up of fluids that could certainly have been life-threatening. After a couple of days the boy was released him back home in good condition. Dr. Rajz says that upon further analysis in the pathology lab the tumor was shown to be benign and didn’t affect the child’s overall development.

10.01.2022 How Many Clowns Can You Fit in a Corona Ward...? Leah Weiss is well known around Shaare Zedek as Rosy the Clown but for one day she put aside her typical clow...n costume and suited up in full personal protective gear. "Rosy" headed on in to Shaare Zedek’s Corona Unit to put a smile on the faces of the patients being treated in isolation. Leah summed up her experience saying, It was great! I was accompanied throughout by Penny Ovadia, the head nurse on the Unit. And while I might have had a slightly different costume and makeup on today, I did everything I could and I’m used to doing to raise the spirits of our patients. The Dream Doctors Project
