06.01.2022 Tried their Lamprais on Sunday. Oh, my my! Finally, a Lamprais worth raving about. We have been in search for a good SL takeaway that does authentic Lamprais for a long time now. The last one we tasted was at Desmond F takeaway in Hampton Park. That was way back before he sold the cafe and left us craving for more. He used to do the authentic Dutch Lamprais, and oh boy, hands-down, that was the best Lamprais in Melbourne. But now, I think we got something closer. Unlike most... SL takeaways that sells savoury / yellow greasy rice wrapped in a banana leaf with some chicken curry, curried vegetables and a cutlet claiming it to be Lamprais (most don’t even know how to spell it correctly, leave alone preparing it), this one at Shades ticks all the boxes. The flavoursome rich and decadent rice, mixed chicken & pork meat curry, brinjal pahè, blachan, fried ash plantains, fried egg, cutlet wrapped in the all-important banana leaf and all that Jazz. I like chef Wick’s spin on the traditional Lamb, Beef and Chicken or Pork mixed curry by replacing it with chicken & pork meat curry instead though I must say, I prefer the traditional three mixed meat recipes. My only critiques would be on the packaging. Would have preferred the Lamprais lovingly wrapped in lightly toasted Banana leaves instead of it being simply wrapped in banana leaf and then put into that ugly plastic container it was all flat when we opened it. In so doing, it lost it visual appeal of a traditional packed Lamprais. Putting it in a taller container might have helped. Afterall, it’s all about presentation. Give it a try!
