24.01.2022 McWhirters Department Store, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane, QLD. Santa takes pride of place on the entrance awning at Christmas time 1959. (The Slide taken is from my collection).

24.01.2022 Danni hasn’t been caffeinated yet but at least it’s easier to know when she’s at work thanks to the new signs which conveniently match her t-shirt.

20.01.2022 Aren't these crazy times!? We haven't been able to get Barilla gluten free pasta for our delicious 'macaroni choice' and the whole nation's been fighting over toilet paper. It's getting harder to buy the items we need to function as a business, and it's been quiet...really quiet, and that's a good thing because it means people are self-isolating. Obviously in a normal situation businesses like to be busy, but most people know these aren't normal times and over the coming days... we'll need to decide how we manage it. This isn't a normal cold or flu season. This is a global pandemic. It isn't just targeting the old and vulnerable though it is overwhelmingly and catastrophically affecting them. It is in our Parliament and is likely in our community. It's contagious before you know you have it, 20% of known infections require hospitalisation and 2% won't make it out. Hospitals will be overwhelmed if it isn't brought in check. We all need to do our part to make sure this doesn't get out of hand. We have been accepting cash and keep cups, but whenever we take cash we have to wash our hands. Whenever we accept a keep cup we have to wash our hands and our workstation. We're generally quiet enough to do so but it isn't practical long term and it isn't responsible in a global pandemic. We need to consider the safety of our community, including its most vulnerable members. We may need to close. While we stay open we'll be unable to continue accepting keep cups and discouraging cash payments. Our disposable cups are completely compostible (not just biodegradable) as are our takeaway containers, and they always have been. We will be taking bulk orders for items like brownies, cookies and meringues and for the time being we will be open but we are monitoring the situation and responding to changes and advice.

19.01.2022 We are open again this week - mainly just for coffee, tea and other drinks at this stage. We will move back to a limited food menu soon. Please feel free to drop by, even just to say hello. Many of us could benefit with a bit more direct social interaction at the moment. Take aways are of course fine but you’re welcome to sit in, read, draw or chat as per usual. We also wanting to make sure that everyone is aware that, as well as the requirements for social distancing an...d a maximum of 10 people sitting inside at any one time, current state government regulations also require us to record the name, address and mobile phone number of a person who dines in - which we understand includes people having a sit down tea or coffee. The key intent of that is of course to make it easier to trace potential contacts in the events of any COVID case. We support that intent of course, but are not very comfortable with it being a legal requirement. None the less, we are told it is a legal requirement of our licence, so we are required to follow it.

18.01.2022 Yeah yeah yeah yeah You wanna learn to do this - The Peppermint Twist Danni has been twisting herself into all kinds of shapes to bring you these tasty gluten free vegan peppermint and chocolate pinwheels.

18.01.2022 Our roswater and pistachio salted shorties are back. The texture is just like a classic shortbread but they're gluten free and completely plantbased. The sweetness of the rosewater balances perfectly with the mellow saltiness of the biscuit and the nuts add an extra complexity to the crumbly crunch of the shortbread style cookie. They do look so cute too. These were a hit when we opened but the plant butter we used to make them was discontinued. Danni's finally been able to redevelop the recipe with easy to access ingredients and we're happy to bring them back.

18.01.2022 We've got some new vanilla glazed cookies in speech bubble and thought bubble designs. Danni likes the taste and texture of glaze better than royal icing and although it's a little more difficult to work with we think it's worth the effort. Like everything we make they're plantbased and gluten free.

12.01.2022 We're celebrating the Winter Solstice with cool blue mild mint meringue trees, flavoured with vanilla and a hint of peppernint. Because June 21st is also the day of the annular eclipse, we'll have a limited run of black magic carrot cupcakes. Things have been very quiet with Covid19 and we're notnyet offering sit down meals but Danni's been hard at work developing new bakery items. We can't wait to show you what we've been working on.

11.01.2022 An update on our trading situation and opening hours. Short version - we’ve put a pause on our menu of fresh prepared meals, but we’re still open as usual for tea, coffee and snacks, as well as just a place to sit, read or chat with a friend or two. Read on for the long version. Like everyone, we’ve been keeping up with the latest advice and information on coronavirus. As we know, this changes and develops from day to day, and sometimes hour to hour. ... The streets of Fortitude Valley are definitely much quieter than normal, but those who are out and about - whether for work or other reasons - are still looking for a tea, coffee or a snack. We have put a pause on our menu of fresh prepared meals, but are still providing our usual supply of teas, coffee, chai or chocolate, as well as some brownies, meringues and the like. Everyone is still welcome to consume their drinks inside, and take a break from the outside world - or get take away of course. We’d ask you not to bring keep cups at present because it's not possible to keep them sanitised. As soon as you touch them we have to wash and sanitise them and that isn't always practical. We also prefer payments by card rather cash if you can, but will still take cash if needed as we certainly don’t want to discriminate against anyone who has to use cash. As our cafe relies on a small, slow paced trade, we can easily monitor numbers of people and keep tables and chairs at a reasonable distance, as well as promptly sanitise them after each use. We still have a big supply of hand cleaner - and toilet paper - so we’re confident we’re doing all we can to minimise risk. This morning the federal government announced a ban on all indoor gatherings of 100 people or more, as well as continuing to urge physical distancing & hygiene awareness. Many were anticipating a directive for all bars, restaurants and cafes to close, but this has not yet been advised. The current circumstances create a very difficult balance between continuing to provide a service to the public and generate some income, while maximising public health. Our hearts go out to all the workers and small businesses in the cafes, bars, restaurant, music, arts and others industries who are being hit hard by the current situation and are having to wrestle with the same dilemma. Every place is different, and we all have to make our own decisions on what is best not just for ourselves, but for staff, customers and the community as a whole. We hope the current unprecedented and highly stressful situation for many people will lead to some major changes in the way our economy and society functions, so it better prioritises the well being of the whole community and enables people to less vulnerable to economic shocks and threats to health.

06.01.2022 Some treats we baked to celebrate World Goth Day - vegan musk-rose meringues & gingerbread bats

04.01.2022 Even though we are allowed to still sell take away coffee and food, in line with the repeated calls from health authorities to reduce public interactions & for people to stay home unless absolutely necessary, we decided to close our cafe until further notice. Our best wishes go out to everyone in these challenging times. Please send us a message if you have any questions or requests.

03.01.2022 save the bats. .. you can't save these bats coz danni already ate them, but we're working on a rehabilitation program and hope to see some positive results later this week. the meringue bones behind them are still available though, and like everything we cook, they're gluten free and vegan.

03.01.2022 The lockdown has really forced a change in the way we do business. Craft dropins are necessarily a thing of the past, but we also know that craft has been an important part of managing the stress of isolation. We're still not fully open but we'd like to get back to sharing our love of everything handmade with small catered craft classes of no more than 6 people. If you're interested in booking a small craft party, please get in touch. Video lessons, patterns and kits are also available on request. The work pictured is a new rose pattern Danni's developing.

01.01.2022 Vegan linzer card suits cookies. Gluten free, vegan, tasty. What more could you want? Available from tomorrow. We have a rotating stock but all our baked goods are available by special request with 48hrs notice...yes, even the meringues.
