24.01.2022 This is why incidental greenspace - street trees, verge gardens, nature strips, even greenwalls and window boxes are so important. Transform some car parking into parklets.

22.01.2022 So maybe we don't want more roads, bigger roads, flyovers etc anywhere near our homes. Narrower roads can be shaded and cooled by street trees and gardens. But for that to happen, we need to have fewer private cars on the roads and use more active transport - walk, cycle, bus, train, etc. And the shady, walkable streets will make that active transport more viable and attractive so it builds on itself.

18.01.2022 City dwellers have as much responsibility as the farmers to increase tree canopy and rainwater infiltration, minimise run-off and re-hydrate the soil. We can start right now in our gardens and on our verges or nature strips.

18.01.2022 Who is your street designed for?

17.01.2022 Cooling our streets with street trees and verge gardens is a step towards tackling increasing urban heat.

14.01.2022 Perhaps barren grass verges are just hostile landscape architecture - we don't want strangers lingering on the verges in front of our houses, keep the few pedestrians that insist on going there moving right along.

11.01.2022 Our streets can be more than corridors for people - they can be wildlife and pollinator corridors connecting parks and gardens. Biodiversity sensitive urban design is something we’ve been working with alongside developers, she said. We just don’t think let’s try and keep a few trees, we actually try and bring back stuff that used to be on a site. "There are lots of species that have only recently disappeared from our suburbs that we could easily bring back with some beau...tiful, careful design. 10.01.2022 Shady, walkable streets can be much-loved places. "The very idea that people must retreat from their homes and travel to a destination park is outmoded; placemaking strategies can bring parks to neighbourhood streets."

10.01.2022 Great article. I've always been uncomfortable with the combination of walking and cycling into "active transport" as though their needs are the same.

08.01.2022 Well done Inner West Council

06.01.2022 Nature strips are where private and public meet. Planting them out with street trees (council) and low growing plants (resident) provides lots of social benefits as well as environmental benefits.

03.01.2022 "...model of neighborhoods watered by the neighbors, could bring about a radical change in how city trees are cared for."

03.01.2022 What do you think? What makes a street a street?
