25.01.2022 People always seem to hate the part when I look at their posture. Let me start by saying.... no one has perfect posture. Postural assessments are a necessary part of your remedial massage treatment. They help me to identify any imbalances that could cause or are causing pain and discomfort.... Your body functions best when it is in correct posture. Checking your posture before a massage helps me to identify which muscles need stretching and which need to be strengthened. Let me give you a quick example: Lately, with many people working from home using the incorrect office set up, I have been seeing a lot of clients presenting with Forward Head Posture (FHP). In clients with FHP, the muscles on the front of the neck are usually shortened and tight. Muscles on the back of the neck are usually lengthened and strained. Pain or discomfort can be present in the neck, back and shoulders as a result of this posture. Its important that your therapist listens to your symptoms but also evaluates your posture and range of motion to determine exactly where your pain and discomfort stem from and what muscles need to be worked on. Next time you are asked to stand for a postural assessment- try stand how you normally would, rather than trying to straighten up! It will help wonders with putting together your treatment plan.

14.01.2022 Massage and pain To many it might seem that they will not benefit from their massage unless they feel pain- WRONG Many musculoskeletal conditions treated by massage therapy are best treated with medium to light pressure, which busts the myth of no pain no gain! ... In fact many of the most effective techniques for tension and imbalance i.e soft tissue release and myofascial release, require minimal pressure! Firm pressure which causes pain can in fact bruise muscles, elicit a defensive reaction in your body and worsen pain cycles. So what is the right pressure? If I can handle firm and am not in so much pain, will it benefit me? The way I explain how to know if the pressure is right is by concentrating on your breath! I want you to be able to breathe COMFORTABLY throughout the massage. Clenching your jaw, shoulders or legs to deal with the pain is counteracting everything you are trying to achieve by having a massage! Find a therapist who can palpate whats going on deep in your connective tissue and implement appropriate techniques to treat the problem.
