18.01.2022 ACTING PRINCIPAL’S REFLECTION: We are the Heart of God in this Time and Place An ancient Chinese curse said, May you live in changing time! Alternatively, the Scriptures tell us that there is a {time for everything [Eccl 3:1 8] and our time now is very different to anything we have known. The world has passed through many major and dramatic changes and survived with new strength and life. After World War II there were dramatic changes to the world; the Empires collap...sed replaced by multiple new nations, a dramatic increase in science and technology; radar, aircraft, medicines, vaccinations and many more. There is now in the world more knowledge, wealth, health, education, population and so on. This is all for the better or the worse, experienced by some and not others, but constitutes major change. The Black Plague in the Middle Ages marked another major change in society and Europe, as did the Potato Famine in Ireland and other places. After these events the world was no longer the same and there is no going back. This is exactly what we are saying now for the new normal; the world is changing, will change and there is no going back. Is this a curse as the ancient proverb says or is it the season for everything, in which we cannot comprehend the work of God from beginning to end. People may ask why God allows such things to happen? God gets blamed for many things of human origin. What is important is how we live in this situation, how we react to the situation, how we adapt to what is happening. We know there are many good things happening as people care for each other, discipline their lives for the common good and find new ways of living. Through all the difficulties we often find inner strength, new gifts and talents, new friends, new relationships. This crisis will finish, sooner or later, we will survive, and we will come out on the other side. How we will be then and how the world will be, we cannot predict. However, we know and believe that Jesus will be with us till the end of time. Our parents, grandparents and ancestors lived in different times, in a different world, which was their time and world. We live now, and will live in the future, and that is our world. We are called to live now as we are with our families and friends, in this society and culture. We are called to faith and service of each other and called to create a better world for all people. There is a time for everything and there is much we can do. Above all we cannot sit back, give up, hide in a corner, we called to be alive, active, creative people who believe in the goodness of God. 18.01.2022 STAFF PROFILE | RETIREMENT EDITION! NAME: Christian Taylor JOB TITLE: Teacher... Sending my daughter on the Japan Exchange with the wrong passport. It was touch and go as we had a three-hour window to get it to her in Brisbane to allow her to join the flight. Deepest apologies to teachers Christine La Rocca and Bettina Ness, both of whom I am sure I prematurely aged through stress. WHAT WILL YOU MISS THE MOST ABOUT SHALOM? The people. Former AD Schools John Browning once said to my wife Mary, The people are the job. DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCITING PLANS FOR RETIREMENT? Yes, spending more time with family, especially our new grandson Alfie. I also have a lot of wood work I want to do along with some gardening (body willing) and reading for my own pleasure.

17.01.2022 STAFF PROFILE | RETIREMENT EDITION! NAME: Robyn Edgar JOB TITLE: Music teacher... HOUSE: McAuley CAREER HISTORY: Prior to joining Shalom College in 2003, I ran my own vocal studio for 25 years. Simultaneously, I studied a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Teaching degrees through UNE, a Graduate Cert of Vocal Pedagogy and Master of Music degrees through Griffith Conservatorium of Music. I taught classroom music at Shalom for 14 years before switching to the Instrumental department where I taught singing for 4 years. I also conducted a choir at St Patricks Primary School for many years and the Shalom College choir for most of my 18 years tenure. In addition to these groups, I conducted a community youth choir for 42 years. HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT SHALOM COLLEGE? 18 years WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT AT SHALOM COLLEGE? The day the beautiful Performing Arts Precinct opened in mid-2005. I had a very spacious room for my classroom teaching and the instrumental music department was able to move out of the shed near the tennis courts. WHAT WILL YOU MISS THE MOST ABOUT SHALOM? The comradery of all the staff, the amazing performances from all the hard work put into the Musicals but more so, teaching beautiful, quality choral music to the choir and vocal ensemble. DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCITING PLANS FOR RETIREMENT? I hope my husband Robert and I can do more travel but more so, an opportunity to work on my golf handicap. 11.01.2022 STAFF PROFILE NAME: Aaron Brown JOB TITLE: English teacher and House Coordinator... HOUSE: Chisholm CAREER HISTORY: After learning to teach in London, I moved to the South Coast of England in the early 2000s. For over ten years, I worked in three schools throughout Dorset County. After being a head of year and then head of senior school, I moved into an Admin post a couple of years before I moved to Australia. I started work at Shalom College three weeks after I arrived in the country. HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT SHALOM COLLEGE? Six years! WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT AT SHALOM COLLEGE? One of the best aspects of working at Shalom is the events and activities we get to do as a College and House. My fondest memories are based around events like the Athletics Carnival. However, floating in the Burnett on Year 7 camp, watching a Platypus swim passed, sticks in my head as my most memorable Australian experience! WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? I love working with young people. They are funny, clever, adventurous. While teaching has tough moments, not many careers offer as much joy. Seeing students learn something new, try something new or even roll their eyes at you, makes the working day so much more fun. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND INTERESTS? I am a huge Football fan. I love Arsenal, largely because they are the greatest football club in the world! I really enjoy reading, running, cooking and eating. If I won the lottery, I would be spending the rest of my life seeing new places with my wife and daughters. Definitely my favourite thing to do. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHT OF 2020 SO FAR? At the very start of 2020, my family and I were finishing up a five-week trip back to England. It was great to show my girls where they were born, for them to meet extended family and know what it actually feels like to be cold! I don’t think they’ll ever moan about a crisp June day in Queensland now that they have experienced London in December!

10.01.2022 STAFF PROFILE NAME: Emma Vanstone JOB TITLE: Business Teacher... HOUSE: Walsh CAREER HISTORY: I haven’t always been a teacher! In fact, this is only my third year of secondary school teaching. When I was in Year 12, I absolutely loved my Business subject. I had an amazing teacher who inspired me to follow a path into the business world, which I did, and it started with me studying my Bachelor of Business, majoring in Marketing. Nearing the completion of my degree, I secured a position with Cadbury Schweppes, where I quickly honed my marketing and merchandising skills with a fast paced, highly competitive company. Following on from that, I took on a senior marketing role within the Qld franchise division owned by Campbell Brothers Ltd, and worked to develop and expand the franchise network. I then received an awesome opportunity with the Department of State Development in the Economic Development team and was very fortunate to work directly with so many amazing businesses across a range of industry sectors, assisting them to improve their capacity and capability through the development of operating, marketing, financial and management strategies. During my time with the Department, I also took on an additional casual role of lecturing and tutoring for the Faculty of Business and Law at CQUniversity, which was great. After my husband and I welcomed our beautiful twin daughters back in 2013, I took on my newest and greatest role ever as ‘Mummy’! And by far, it was the hardest, yet most rewarding! While I loved every second of my corporate career, becoming a parent changed my priorities forever and I began to reassess my work, life and family balance. So when our little ones started Kindy, I went back to Uni and completed my Grad Dip of Teaching and Learning. The family joke is that all three Vanstone girls started school in the same year of 2018 our daughters, Hannah and Summer, started Prep, and I started teaching, and we’ve never looked back! HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT SHALOM COLLEGE? Still a bit of a newbie! I commenced in Term 3, 2019 (before that, I was at Kepnock State High School). WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT AT SHALOM COLLEGE? Taking on my Walsh PC3 class at the beginning of this year super proud of these guys and girls (some days more so than others, especially when their uniforms are perfect and their record books immaculate!). WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? Using my business and industry experience to deliver real-life, authentic learning opportunities in the classroom. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND INTERESTS? Spending time and having fun with the people that I love is always number 1! DO YOU HAVE ANY EXCITING PLANS FOR 2020? After such a hectic and busy year with so many COVID curveballs thrown around, I am most looking forward to some down time to rest, relax and have fun with my little family.

10.01.2022 STAFF PROFILE NAME: Kelli Blair-Cory JOB TITLE: School-Based Indigenous Education Liaison Officer ... HOUSE: Adams CAREER HISTORY: Cake Decorator Retail 2IC Bras N Things Childcare 2IC (Eastside Little Learners) Boxing Trainer Shalom College Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Teacher Assistant Shalom College Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Liaison Officer HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AT SHALOM COLLEGE? 7 years WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT AT SHALOM COLLEGE? This is a hard one to answer, I have had many memorable moments working with the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students. If I had to choose one it would be, watching every year, the Year 12 Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander students graduate from Shalom College wearing their Indigenous sashes. To see their proud smiling faces makes my job one of the most rewarding positions. WHAT IS THE BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? Being able to share and acknowledge the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander culture within the Shalom Community, is special to me. This also gives the Indigenous students a sense of belonging within the Shalom community and to see them thrive and succeed at Shalom is the best thing about my job. WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES AND INTERESTS? Spending quality time with my children and family. Boxing and Netball are my biggest interests. I run the Bundaberg Boxing Club with my father. I play Netball for Brothers Division 1, and coach Netball teams for Brothers, Bundaberg REP and the Wide Bay Thundercats; sport keeps me very busy and I get to meet great friends through my sport. WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST HIGHLIGHT OF 2020 SO FAR? Celebrating my eldest daughters’ engagement was very exciting and wedding dress shopping later in the year is going to be one of the biggest highlights of 2020.

08.01.2022 PRINCIPAL’S REFLECTION: I enjoyed my first week back at Shalom last week. I wandered in and out of classrooms and, at one point, ended up in a Year 8 RE class where the students had been given the task to try and imagine and draw what Heaven might look like! Not sure if I made it any easier for them but I told them I had absolutely no idea what Heaven looks like. Too often, ‘religious people’ have fixated on the next life rather than worrying about how we live this one. I thi...nk religions have spent too much time promising eternal rewards or threatening damnation rather than encouraging all of us to live out, now, the Gospel demand to care for each other and the world in which we live. Pope Francis released last week a letter to the world called ‘Fratelli tutti’ which translates as ‘brotherhood of all’. At a time when we are so conscious of political or economic divisions, Francis reminds everyone that we are connected. That we all have a responsibility to make this life, better for all not just ourselves. The letter begins by examining the signs of a lack of fraternity in society. The list is long and comprehensive, including the erosion of human rights, the dominance of ideologies of economic self-interest over the common good, the treatment of refugees, the poisoning of public conversation and communication, and the many forms of discrimination. The letter reminds us all that we have a responsibility to demand respect for human beings for their intrinsic value and not for their use. The letter asks everyone to be committed to peace and to reject war. It condemns capital punishment and encourages everyone to engage in processes of forgiveness and reconciliation. I was interested to read during the week that this letter from Pope Francis has been criticized for being too political particularly in the United States. If what the Pope is saying is political, that is a political party that I would be happy to join. Yesterday was ‘Sanctity of Life’ Sunday. Bishop Michael sent around a letter on this that is well worth your consideration. Life, at every point, is so important. A society that does not respect that is very unhealthy.
