19.01.2022 This is a great article discussing the role inflammation plays in mental health.

19.01.2022 Can a naturopath really effectively help someone who is struggling with mental health? The answer is a resounding yes! You would probably be surprised Studies have shown various nutritional therapies & herbal medicine to be effective in both the prevention and treatment of mental health disorders including depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder & schizophrenia; with depression and anxiety being the most studied. These therapies have often been found to be as effective as ...pharmaceutical interventions, or to increase the benefits when used alongside medicine. I use food, neutraceuticals, psychobiotics, herbal medicine & lifestyle strategies when working with clients with mental health disorders. I also like to work in a team with other health professionals (such as psychologists) where necessary this multi modality approach can be very beneficial.

16.01.2022 Another question I am frequently asked is, what is the difference between a nutritionist & a dietitian? Apart from qualification of course, there are some fundamental differences in the way we practice. (I should probably note here that a dietitian can use the term nutritionist but a nutritionist can’t use the term dietitian this comes down to qualification). One of these differences is that dietitians (note this is a generalisation) view food as what we eat, while... functional nutritionists consider food to be a therapeutic or healing substance food is medicine. Dietitians use standard measurements of food and nutrients and treat diseases or conditions that is specific diets for specific conditions. The focus is on energy density (kilojoules) and prescribed eating patterns based primarily on food groups (such as the healthy eating pyramid). The functional medicine approach to nutrition is a holistic approach - that is, it addresses the whole person and what the specific individual needs for maximum health. It attempts to get to the root cause of the disease or problem and is founded on the philosophy, provide the body with what it needs and it will be well the focus being on building, restoring and enhancing the body so that it can heal and operate at its best. The focus is on nutrient density rather than energy density the quality of the food and maximising nutrients rather than focusing on energy in, energy out.

15.01.2022 Last month I posted about this bird who had built a nest right in our clinic entry. Just some updated photos of the babies who left the nest yesterday. It's been special to watch.

14.01.2022 Hi Lovelies, For those who haven’t met me either in person or on my website, I’m Tania Mum, Nanna & qualified naturopath & nutritionist. I love God, my family and my friends. I enjoy time in my garden, a good book or movie and coffee with friends. I love simplicity in life, good food, laughter in a word I love ‘hygge’. ... I may not fit your stereotype of a naturopath... I enjoy a glass of wine, a cup of good coffee, some dark chocolate and believe that food should be enjoyed as well as maximised for nourishment. I believe in eating real food and filling your life with that which brings you joy. I believe in balance - that people were made to be free, but also to look after our bodies. I have personally experienced many years of chronic fatigue which stemmed from maternal depletion; I have walked through post natal depression, stress and burnout, major depression and mild anxiety, food intolerances and autoimmune challenges. I also have a son with type 1 diabetes. I have walked, and am still walking a journey that gives me understanding and empathy for others health journeys for what they may be experiencing and what may have gotten them there; as well as a passion to see people free and whole. I love what I do! I love joining others on their health journey, wherever they are currently at & sharing that journey to help them claim back their health. For more information, send me a message or hop on over to my website www.shalomhealth.com.au.

13.01.2022 We could all do with a little bit more "hygge"!

10.01.2022 I love the simplicity & versatility of eggs. They’re such a quick & easy way to pull together a meal breakfast, lunch, dinner or snack... boiled, poached, scrambled or made into an omelette, or add them to soups or salads. They’re also really easy to jazz up a bit. One of my favourites is a simple poached egg on toast (I like sourdough best), jazzed up with some avocado, wilted spinach & sprinkled with black cumin seeds & dukkah. Simple, quick (like 5 minutes), tasty, cheap & nutrient dense ticks all the boxes for me.

09.01.2022 People often ask me What is a naturopath, or what sort of things do you treat? So today I thought I’d share a bit from my website for those of you who don’t really know what it is I actually do. So what is naturopathy? It’s a holistic (& natural) approach to health. It considers the whole person the body as a whole as well as mind, emotions and spirit. It doesn’t just treat symptoms but addresses the underlying imbalances. Naturopathy benefits EVERYONE those see...king to prevent disease, increase energy & maximise health as well as those seeking to manage existing health conditions, especially chronic health conditions. Natural medicine has a lot to offer in a lot more areas of health than people realise. In many ways being a naturopath is like gardening (another of my loves). A gardener pays attention to the health of the soil, the location of the plant (where does it thrive), providing what the plant needs (water, sunshine or shade, mulch, good food, good companions). I know that if my plant has the right conditions & is strong & healthy, it is less susceptible to disease or pests. Similarly, I know that if a person is well nourished, well positioned, in conditions where they thrive, has supportive relationships, is strong & healthy then they are less susceptible to disease & infection. If the body is given what it needs then it has the ability to be well. And when a person’s health is out of balance & weakened I work with the person to address the underlying cause & nurture it back to health. When I work with a client I am not only working with their presenting symptoms but the whole person & everything that has contributed to their current state of health. We work together to identify the why of your current health and how to improve your health, energy & vitality. After taking a comprehensive case, I work with you to create an individually tailored treatment plan. Outside of the consultation time I do extra research to make sure I am providing you with the best treatment possible. For more information, feel free to hop on over to my website, www.shalomhealth.com.au, or ask me a question.

08.01.2022 I really love working with people who are struggling with mood or mental health. I often find that people don’t realise what a massive part nutrition, the gut, lifestyle & environment play in our mental health. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! what I can actually bring to the table for my clients struggling with mood & mental health. This is why I love my job! It is such a joy to walk beside these beautiful people & provide them with tools, hope & the possibilities of a different approach and to watch them find healing & freedom.

05.01.2022 I don't know about you but the last couple of weeks my hay fever has picked up, so I have created a new tea, "Relieve", which I've added to my range - a lovely blend of herbs with antihistamine & anti-allergic properties to aid in the the relief of mild hay fever.

04.01.2022 ‘Tisane’: an infusion (as of dried herbs) used as a beverage or for medicinal effects. AKA herbal tea; but did you know that herbal teas are not technically teas? By definition tea is made from the plant Camellia sinensis (think black tea, green tea, oolong). Herbal teas on the other hand are an infusion made from a plant other than Camellia sinensis. So a ‘herbal tea’ is really a ‘tisane’. I just like the word.

03.01.2022 We generally drink tea for pleasure but do you wonder which tea is the healthiest & what's the best way to drink it? An interesting read. How do you like to drink your tea?

02.01.2022 When your 15 year old cooks you breakfast. No complaints here.

01.01.2022 I really love my job & here’s why I love sitting with people and hearing their stories & knowing that despite what they’ve been told, they are nowhere near out of options. I get excited about what we can do. I love the privilege of sharing people’s health journeys. I love providing people with a comfortable & safe space & time to discuss their health concerns & really be heard.... I love helping people find solutions even when it takes time to work through complex challenges. I love seeing peoples pain reduced. I love seeing people’s energy improve. I love seeing people find healing & freedom & peace. I love helping people learn about their bodies & food & what choices they can make to improve their health. I love helping people be nourished enough for their bodies to be able to heal & function well. I love providing non toxic options for health & healing. See more

01.01.2022 The Mediterranean diet is probably the most well touted diet for health. The problem is - what we hear about as the "healthy Mediterranean diet" in the end is just another list of food rules to follow, with the essence of the diet missing because the research found that it was about diet AND lifestyle - the true Mediterranean "diet" encompasses a lifestyle approach to eating. It values the eating experience taking time to prepare and sit down to a meal with others to ...enjoy the experience of eating. Quoting a small part of the linked article In Italy or Greece, leisurely gatherings around the dinner table often stretch for hours. In some cities, shops regularly shut down for two to three hours at lunchtime so people can gather and eat. And this isn’t just about having a nice break (although that is a big perk)social eating slows you down so you feel your hunger and fullness signals better and therefore are less likely to overeat. It also helps you to feel more connected, which boosts feel-good serotonin and endorphin levels. There’s more and more research showing social support is important to human health and overall mood. It’s actually linked to living longer.

01.01.2022 Welcome to October and what a month! It’s mental health month, but also includes national nutrition week & herbal medicine week all during October & all things I’m passionate about. So watch this space
