18.01.2022 So here is a fun fact being as I was born in Worcester and it’s Halloween. One of Worcesters weirdest characters - Edward Kelley. I'm sure that a lot of you have heard of Dr John Dee, scholar, alchemist, mathematician, occultist, and advisor to Queen Elizabeth I. After trying for years to contact the higher forces, he encountered Edward Kelley - born in Worcester, 1st August 1555 - who was able to scry using Dr Dee's Aztec disc of black polished obsidian (now in the British M...useum, and still very weird). They worked together to contact angelic beings, especially a spirit called Madimi who (as well as suggesting they swap wives) transmitted a language and script known as Enochian (after the apocryphal Book of Enoch that tells of a race of fallen angels who taught humanity the arts and sciences of civilisation). It's a story worth looking into, from the Renaissance Occult Philosophy in a world in which mathematics and science were in the same realm of speculation as the Bible, Kabbalah and fallen angels, to contemporary art and thought - it's echoed in Derek Jarman's films, especially 'Jubilee' and 'The Tempest'. And Enochian script is still used and Enochian Magic is still practiced by modern occultists - and if it hadn't been for Worcester lad Edward Kelley, it wouldn't have happened . . . Worcestershire doesn't get much weirder than this! . . . The picture shows Dee and Kelley summoning a spirit in a graveyard . . .
