01.01.2022 As Architects, we receive some exciting requests from clients, all of which come from frustration in their current living arrangements. Some requests we've been receiving of late, it is clear that our cities will grow beyond their existing footprint. The verging factors of the world we live in means people will endeavour to spread away from the confines of their tight inner-city living. The rural spread could be a good thing for Australian Cities and the environment. A co...ntroversial idea when Architects taught in Universities to densify the city for decades to help minimise public and private transportation, and therefore the environment. The work from home opportunities will increase, and the prospect of larger open spaces will be appealing for many. People will seek out more rural living arrangements while still being employed within large institutions. Environmentally this will mean fewer commute hours on the roads or public transport. Therefore achieve the goal of densification was trying to accomplish in the first place, in a way we never thought possible. Will these strange scenarios mean that our inner cities will stop densification all-together? Well, frankly, no. It will mean the densification of the city will not be so highly concentrated on the inner city suburbs with high apartment blocks. The densification will spread over a much larger area, and dwellings will be set-up to manage family life, work and recreation. Will we still need to go into the city for that weekly meeting with the BOSS? Yes! But the concept of 1 commute a week into "the big smoke," verses the daily grind will mean open spaces will be a deciding factor for a lot of people.
