25.01.2022 Truth, Treaty, Voice We will sit with First Nations families, peoples, organisations and communities, recognising the diversity of histories, views and dreams. We will collaborate recognising that self determination is the basis of all our work together. ... We respect the ways of knowing, being and doing of First Nations peoples and know they must be the foundation of this work together. We will utilise the knowledge of First Nations people widely in doing this, so that the policy of self determination is embedded in our interactions with First Nations peoples. The ACT Greenshave laid out a comprehensive plan to support First Nations people in our community. As part of our plan we will: Establish a First Nations Social Justice Commissioner within the Human Rights Commission Give First Nations community control to Boomanulla Oval, the Yarramundi Cultural Centre and the Ngunnawal Bush Healing Farm Support the community to establish a Ngunawal Language Centre at the Yarramundi Cultural centre with dedicated full time staff to work to revive the Ngunawal language and develop a language program for the ACT primary school curriculum. 22.01.2022 The ACT Greens team in the Legislative Assembly is looking to recruit a range of staff in the wake of our recent electoral success. These long term roles start from January 2021. These are challenging roles in a fast paced environment, but they come with real opportunities to make a real and positive difference in the world.... 19.01.2022 At this start of National NAIDOC Week I’d like to again affirm my commitment to listening deeply to First Nations people. We recognise that the First Nations people of the ACT and surrounding regions were the first sovereign peoples of this place and that they lived on this land according to their own laws, customs and governance systems from time immemorial. The Greens want First Nations people to flourish, to achieve the dreams and aspirations they have for their lives and... for their children and grandchildren and to support them in all they need to live their lives in health, wellbeing and peace on their lands. We are committed to Truth, Treaty, Voice and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). As part of the NAIDOC week observations I’d like to again affirm my commitment to the ACT Greens policy on First Nations People. 19.01.2022 When building light rail to Woden why stop there? Why not include Phillip and tie into the Park & Ride at Mawson to unlock the benefits across southern Canberra? The ACT Greens think there is a strong case to be made for extending light rail to Mawson as part of Stage 2, with the goal of having light rail to Mawson commence operation at the same time or shortly after the opening of light rail from the City to Woden Town Centre.... 16.01.2022 Transport emissions are the ACT’s biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions, at over 60%. The only way we can properly address climate change is through a rapid transition to zero-emissions travel. That’s why we’ll be introducing a range of new measures to help Canberrans switch to electric vehicles, to stimulate the market (including second hand markets) and lower costs for everyone. The new measures will include: -- No interest loans of up to $15,000 for households and co...mmunity organisations to purchase zero emissions vehicles -- 2 years of free registration for newly registered zero emissions vehicles -- Building at least 50 public vehicle charging stations across Canberra -- Ensuring all new Transport Canberra buses are zero emissions. This is a great start to the ‘electric vehicle rEVolution’ the Greens championed in the election, and one of the many climate change initiatives forming part of our Parliamentary and Governing Agreement with the Labor Party.

16.01.2022 Voting is one of the most fundamental parts of being a citizen in our country. I voted last week, as early voting is running all the way until election day to make it more COVID-safe for everyone. Under changes to the rules in recent months, you can register to vote when you turn up to a polling place anytime up until 6pm on polling day.... So it’s never too late to get to a polling place in the ACT and cast your #1 vote for The Greens and a Better Normal. You can find your nearest polling place here www.elections.act.gov.au//2020_legisla/polling-places-2020 Read more on our plans to build a better normal greens.org.au/act/better-normal #BetterNormal

14.01.2022 The ACT Government is calling for feedback on a new community centre in Haig Park. The plan is to convert the former Haig Park depot into a flexible community centre. The proposed design includes flexible spaces that are able to host community activities such as gardening, painting, woodwork, playgroups, yoga, and more.... You can have a say on how this project develops. Comments close on 26 November and can be made at www.yoursay.act.gov.au/haigpark/community-centre

13.01.2022 Canberra has turned yellow in recognition of National Road Safety Week. Have you taken the pledge to ‘drive so others survive’? As Minister for Consumer Affairs I also urge everyone to use this week to check your car isn’t impacted by faulty Takata airbags, and if it is to get them replaced immediately for free. Check by visiting ismyairbagsafe.com.au... National Road Safety Week runs from 15 - 22 November, in honour of the 1,200 lives lost and 44,000 seriously injured on Australian roads each year.

12.01.2022 As Minister for Consumer Affairs I find it concerning that a major retailer like Harvey Norman is charging such high interest rates on their store credit card. Financial counsellors often warn people about the risks of high interest cards, and they can lead to debt spirals. CHOICE magazine awarded Harvey Norman a ‘shonky’ award for this and related practices, with consumer advocates suggesting Harvey Norman is a business with ‘a knack for signing customers up for credit cards... without properly checking how suitable the card is for them’. Compounding this is the fact that most media appears to have overlooked this issue - as this week’s Media Watch episode explored - possibly because of Harvey Norman’s huge advertising spend over the years. It’s important for consumers to know this information. You might want to read CHOICE’s commentary on this issue. Make sure you’re aware of what you’re signing up to and seek financial advice if you need it. 11.01.2022 At a time of climate crisis, the ACT Greens have plans to transition over time to a clean, green all-electric Canberra, with the goal of making the ACT ‘fossil fuel gas free’ by 2040. This great article takes a look at a real Canberra family already planning their transition away from gas. The Greens have a plan to support the community, businesses and industry to make the transition to a clean, renewable electricity powered city, including financial incentives to support rep...lacement appliances at the end of their life. It’s cheaper in the long run, and we need to start making the switch because the gas appliances we buy today will be in use decades from now. 10.01.2022 I was privileged to be the ACT Minister for Mental Health in the last term of the Assembly and am proud to be passing the portfolio to my colleague Emma Davidson. We are excited to be supporting the Perinatal Wellbeing Centre and partners to celebrate Perinatal Mental Health Week 2020. We’re Here, We’re Listening, and we will do all we can to support expectant and new parents through beautiful and sometimes challenging experiences.

05.01.2022 Great to have a chat with Murpharoo and the Guardian Australia audience!

05.01.2022 It was great to be joined by two Greens colleagues as the ACT cabinet met for the first time this morning. We are working constructively with our Labor colleagues to grapple with the challenges of 2020 and plan for the years beyond.

03.01.2022 Now, more than ever, our communities need places where they can come together, and sport is a critical part of that story. The ACT Greens want to create a city that encourages and facilitates as much community sport as possible. So we have a plan for:... Building a new multi-purpose indoor sports centre in the Woden Town Centre Progressing the Stromlo Forest Park Masterplan Investing in making the ACT a premier MTB destination Reviewing ACT Government Sport and Recreation Grants to improve transparency A new competition standard Half Pipe, and a Skatepark in Dickson Providing women specific swimming times for all ACT Government owned public pools Walking and cycling infrastructure improvements Repairing our waterways to improve water quality for our recreational lake water users Park, playground, water fountain and exercise equipment installation and upgrades Read more on our plans for better community sports in Canberra greens.org.au/act/community-sport-and-recreation #BetterNormal

02.01.2022 A so-called gas-led recovery will be an environmental and economic flop, and it will saddle Australians with higher bills and higher greenhouse gas emissions. Just look at the evidence in this new report from the Grattan Institute, which says: The only rational approach, for governments, the energy industry, and its customers, is to begin planning for a future without natural gas, or at least with a substantially reduced role for natural gas Large-scale use of gas as a t...ransition fuel does not stack-up economically or environmentally. The smart approach is to embrace this recovery period as an opportunity for rapid decarbonisation: reducing greenhouse gas emissions as fast as possible, and at the same time creating clean jobs, and driving new investment. That’s the approach we’re pursuing in the ACT, where we’re getting on with a range of ambitious plans to phase out natural gas, and reach net zero emissions by 2045.

01.01.2022 There were powerful scenes this morning in the Parliamentary precinct as our newest Senator Lidia Thorpe was Welcomed to Country by local First Nations leaders at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy before taking her seat in the big house. As the first federal Aboriginal MP for the Greens and first Aboriginal Senator for Victoria we are looking forward to her shaking things up here in Canberra and providing important leadership. Welcome to Canberra Senator Thorpe!
