25.01.2022 What can your horses breathing tell you about their health? A rate of breathing outside of their normal can sometimes be an early sign of something not qu...ite right. Normal breathing is somewhere between 10 and 24 breaths per minute, though your horse may be slightly different! An increase in breaths per minute can be due to a range of factors; a few common factors including; if your horse gets too hot if your horse is in pain. Learning your horses normal breaths per minute can give you something to work with when if it seems something is not quite right! See more

22.01.2022 A tip for instructors - Make it a habit to ask your students questions during their lessons. This will help to keep them thinking, improve the accuracy of their... feel, and keep them breathing (when they answer you.) It also allows you to more accurately judge where they are at mentally, in terms of their level of feel and understanding. See more

13.01.2022 Did you know the Horses digestive tract is very different to most other animals? Horses belong to a category known as non-ruminant herbivores. They are her...bivores because they only eat plants, and they are non-ruminant because they do not have the four-chamber stomach that ruminants have (such as cows & sheep) Instead of a specialized stomach, horses have a Cecum which houses microbes to aid digestion. The Cecum is midway through the horses digestive tract, and therefore not as efficient as that of the ruminant whose fermentation vat (rumen) is toward the beginning. For this reason, horses need to consume more than ruminants as they cannot process forage as efficiently, so do not get as many calories from the same amount of forage as a cow would, for example. Given the chance, horses will naturally graze for the majority of the day and night, having small naps every few hours. Horses stomachs are small, especially for their body size, so slowly grazin is their best option. Unfortunately, owners who try and make up for the lack of forage by feeding more concentrates, can easily overload the horses digestive system. This may lead to complications such as colic. Slow feeding is a continuous feeding method, giving your horse access to forage keeping their minds busy and their digestive system active. Just Grazin Custom Nets are specifically designed with this feeding method in mind. Just Grazin nets slow consumption making the hay last for longer, extending grazing time and reducing hay wastage, which is a major issue when feeding hay free choice/continuously. Jump over to our website and order your own Just Grazin Custom Hay Net today!.....$10 flat rate shipping, orders over $200 FREE post!! www.justgrazincustomnets.com #hungryhorse #slowfeedhaynet #justgrazincustomnets

13.01.2022 Long hind toes in the horse create a significant lever against the tip of the coffin bone making the horse work harder to get that foot off the ground. Working ...harder to get that foot of the ground then in turn stresses the gluteal muscles and creates pain in those muscles. This is unfortunately a very common (and often overlooked) problem. Long toes are always a bad thing with horses. But it is so commonly overlooked in hind feet. Be proactive about your horse's soundness! See more

08.01.2022 PSA: When sourcing hay that has barley grass seeds in it, check your horses' mouths. This poor horse was spotted by Claire McCallum Equine Dentistry aroun...d Mudgee in New South Wales. The animal was new to the property and had most likely had the problem for a while. Avoid this by being aware of any unusual smells and checking your horses' mouths and incisors. if you find any evidence of the seeds being stuck, an examination with a speculum is advised.

06.01.2022 Having a horse that doesnt float properly is stressful! Here are 4 questions to ask yourself if you have a float, so that you can check what youre currently d...oing and hopefully avoid unnecessary stress! 1. Do you have a regular maintenance program for your floats? Most horse owners tend to get things fixed when they go wrong rather than practice preventative management. 2. Where do you keep your float? Many horse owners dont have a place that they can keep their float under shelter. This can lead to degradation of the float which is not always obvious. 3. Have you checked the breaks or bearings recently? Have you checked to see if anything is loose and causing trouble? 4. Are the electrics maintained? If water gets into the electrics, things can go wrong, fast! Non-LED lights are cheaper, so float manufactures often put these on their floats. Globes can blow, connections can get loose. The result? Brake & indicator lights that dont work and a potential for accidents! When did you last check your float? by @dressageridertraining See more

03.01.2022 Tips for when your viewing horses Always be honest about your abilities to the seller. Watch them ride the horse and only do as much as they do. Eg. If ...they don't canter the horse then don't canter or ask why. Be open when looking at horses Eg. If it's not the right colour or not quite the right height or it's older then you desire be open and flexible. Your first horse does not need to be a stunning young golden palomino stallion. Just because it's not sound for jumping or racing doesnt mean it might not make a weekend trail horse for example. Only look if your genuinely able to buy on that day and take a deposit with you. Have the money saved for the purchase and money for feed, vet, saddlery etc. Sort out agistment or a paddock prior to looking. You don't have to make a decision then and there but tell the seller your very interested can I call you in an hour or sleep on it. Be aware no deposit no answer you may miss out. Don't be pushed by a seller saying others interested -there probably is others keen but go with your gut. Wear suitable clothing Inc long pants and proper riding attire and helmet. Taking someone experienced or your coach is very important for that second eye and opinion. Or arrange a vet check depending on price of horse. Once you buy the horse continue coaching and lessons as much as you possibly can afford once a month at the absolute minimum. Nip problems in the bud before they even arise. Look after your horses teeth, feet, and maintain or continue the education etc it's a lifetime investment that will give you many years of joy. Do you have my more tips?? Add them in comments below
