25.01.2022 I saw the most amazing passionfruit vine the other day. Growing in a pot (yup -with no roots in the ground) At least 6 metres long, covered in fruit, and espaliered along three wires. This made it easy to harvest and prune. (It got lots of good organic fertiliser) I was jealous. So I spent the morning properly training our new passionfruit vines. Gave them some compost tea too. I'm determined to love it to full bloom.... Fingers crossed.

24.01.2022 Second lot of summer seed sowing today. We are using the newspaper pots as fast as we can make them.

23.01.2022 If Marma could talk she would say "why does everyone keep coming in and staring at me every two hours? I'll have them when I'm ready!" It has given us time to think of names though. Here's the short list.... Earl Grey Marmaduke Sir Mustard Babagnoush Kasundi Kimchi Pickle Cumquat Crumpet

22.01.2022 Triplets! Two does and one buck A long labour, with some assistance. All out by 8pm after signs starting at 1pm. Babaganoush, Kimchi, and Earl Grey.... Closest guess was Julia - congratulations! More photos tomorrow

21.01.2022 Twice a week we are lucky enough to have Annabelle drop in before school. Today she helped me harvest some snow peas and I put some red ties on the ones we want to save for seed! Thanks Annabelle

21.01.2022 Several people got in touch for the method of making newspaper pots. So I put the instructions on youtube. These are more time consuming than the round ones but i find they sit better in the trays and hold together better. Good luck... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGgdIl29fQQ See more

20.01.2022 For those of you who are commenting that you love goats, you may want to watch the latest from the Alfalfa Males. Then tell us what you think and like their page. More baby goats coming soon!... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jPU0whIbcA&t=4s

20.01.2022 Some signs but no kids yet. Annabelle has written a great story about it though.

19.01.2022 Last time I tried cleansing snails it ended up in a horrible smelly mess but so far so good this time around. The idea is you feed them on only lettuce or bran to clean out all the baddies. They should be ready in a week or so. Apparently their poo will go green. We work pretty hard to keep them out of the garden so eating them seems a good way to "upcycle" them. The chooks won't be happy though.... Anyone got a favourite snail recipe?

17.01.2022 Some in action footage from our play date today. . .

16.01.2022 Leila and Emma helped me pickle a big harvest of beetroot this week. I planted lots of different types and once we cut them up they looked so beautiful with all the colours. But of course once they were pickled they all look purple!... Ten jars off to the pantry.

15.01.2022 Today's goat report. All are doing well - feeding , sleeping, exploring and just starting to run. And not even two days old. Marma is a fantastic mum, keeps an eye on who has fed and encourages the others to find the milk bar. Human parents are still exhausted. . . .

15.01.2022 Last week we had an absolute blast filming a series of videos for the City of Stirling about keeping your house cool in summer and warm in winter. Lots of laughs and on the spot new ideas. We are looking forward to the blooper reel!... (We are running a workshop on the principles of solar passive house design in Dianella if you live north of the river.)

14.01.2022 We have residential and non residential volunteers at Ecoburbia. Sebastian has been coming Wednesday mornings for a few weeks now - last week he sent a list of things he learnt while he was here. . . . And there was I thinking he was just bricking up a "pot" for the passionfruit. Liza has just left us after nearly a month living in the loft. It was fun having her joyous youthful energy around. She did lots of gardening and cleaning, plus taught us a few new vegan dishes.... Thanks guys!

13.01.2022 We are away on a short holiday at the moment. While we've been away I've been working on some signs for our "help yourself" herb garden. I was astonished to discover we have 27 varieties in there. I've got lots of work to do!

12.01.2022 We're having babies!

11.01.2022 This is going to be so much fun! Our online Living Smart course starts on Monday and it really is an Australia wide and even international one - we have participants from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and the US! If you want to join us best to hurry - there are only five places left. ... If you have not heard about Living Smart there are details in the link below. And get in touch if you live in Beaconsfield - you get the course for free! https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/living-smart-with-ecoburbia

10.01.2022 Last night we ate the snails (well Tim Cat and I did - no one else was brave enough. . . ) They tasted a bit like overcooked shell pasta with lots of garlic butter and parsley. Mostly like garlic butter and parsley to be frank. We decided they were apocalypse food but I'm glad I now know how to prepare them safely. ... Details on photos.

10.01.2022 The kids have been busy. Wednesday night they attended their first ever Alfalfa Males jam night. Yesterday Babaganoush and Kimchi were on channel seven news - their first modelling experience. ... And today Kimchi visited an old folks home - everyone got a hold. Plus our daily afternoon play on the empty block - with lots of visitors. They have discovered how to get under the fence so lots of hands are needed!

09.01.2022 It's nearly time! If we count Lady Marmalade as an Australian miniature she is due in five days, 10 if we count her as a saneen. (She's half half) All I know is she is over it. . . . ... Didn't even want to come for a walk today! So the time had come. You need to guess- - date and time of birth - number and sex of babies - potential names (do we go with Ladies or preserves?) Go for it!

08.01.2022 Many of you will have been following the story of Nyit - the tiny house at Ecoburbia. (nyit means little in Noongar) Britta and her team of female tradies built this house last summer and (although it has taken us a while) Cat (our first tenant) moved in this week. Britta built the house as part of her year twelve major project exploring women in non-traditional trades. Britta has to give a talk at school as part of the project and she is having a trial run at Ecoburbia on Thursday Sept 24th (6.45pm). So come and hear the story and have a look through the final result

07.01.2022 Day one of what I know will be a ridiculous number of cute goat photos and videos. . . . Stay tuned!

06.01.2022 I am proud of this cabbage. I've never grown a cabbage that doesn't have lots of holes and poo from the cabbage moths. All thanks to Scott and Rebekah and their dedication to keeping the buggers at bay. ... Coleslaw for lunch today.

06.01.2022 The kids continue to grow and provide us with hours of entertainment. The highlight of the day is a trip to a vacant block with a great "hill" of rubble.

03.01.2022 Today Tim and I took Kimchi and Earl Grey to Annabelle's P1 class at Beaconsfield Primary. And this afternoon this amazing thank you card arrived. Their drawings are incredible!

03.01.2022 For those of you in Beaconsfield, I am looking forward to this FREE composting workshop, picnic and discussion about a community garden. See you on Sunday at 11am at Winterfold Primary School Veggie Garden.

01.01.2022 It's COMPOST time! Looking forward to this workshop as we are going to be able to cover more than we normally do - worm farms, cold compost systems, community compost systems, hot compost and even humanure. Plus some demonstrations about testing it's ph and what to do with it once you have it! Whether you are an experienced composter or just starting on this fascinating journey please think about coming along.... (Actually don't just think about it - just come along. This Saturday 2-4 at Ecoburbia!) Free if you are in Beaconsfield (email me to enrol [email protected]) Otherwise $5 to register, then $20 - $50 on the day, based on your own circumstances. Swaps are possible.
