25.01.2022 Orthorexia is something that we are seeing more and more of in our clinic: "I was hitting my daily recommended intake of fruit and vegetables, ensuring a more than adequate amount of protein and hitting those calcium targets. Yet, I was obsessed. Obsessed with tracking every morsel of food that went into my mouth, and avoiding so called 'toxic' and 'harmful' food products. I was obsessed with clean eating."

24.01.2022 While the headline references Kim K, this article is actually focused on the dangers of dieting. (I should note that they refer to me as 'Dr Patrick' in the article by mistake!)

24.01.2022 Let's just stop commenting on other people's bodies. I was having a conversation with girlfriends just the other day about all the insulting comments that have been made to us over the years about our bodies and appearance. It has to stop.

23.01.2022 Please read this article. All of it. And if you see someone being treated poorly because of their weight, please don't be afraid to say something. "But when they see fat people being mistreated, they freeze. Maybe its because the risk feels too big. Maybe they dont know what to say. Maybe they genuinely dont notice. Whatever the reason, they dont intervene. And when they stay silent, I am still alone. I am stuck, I am reeling, and I am alone. I would love to hear their voices saying something, anything, when someone passes judgment on fat people. I would love to hear them ask friends to stop offering unsolicited diet advice. I long to see one of them share Errol Narvaezs story. Anything to interrupt the thick, toxic smog of attitudes and actions aimed at fat people."

23.01.2022 This is a big part of the work we do with clients at Shape Your Mind: helping them to relearn how to tune in and respond to signals of hunger and satiety.

22.01.2022 This: "For so many people "tips and tricks" can nosedive into disaster, and we have a responsibility to the nearly 1 million Australians with eating disorders to promote a culture of mindfulness and moderation this holiday season, instead of fuelling disordered eating under the guise of health."

22.01.2022 "When you diet, you are trying to make changes from a place of body hatred. This year, why not work on making changes from a place of body respect and acceptance? Embrace new habits that are good for whole-body health regardless of whether they lead to a change in weight."

21.01.2022 Who has seen the film Embrace?! A must-see for everyone wanting to learn how to love their body and wanting to teach their children to love and accept their bodies too.

20.01.2022 I absolutely love this. So often we think that our weight is the source of all our problems and therefore if we can just change that then everything will be better! But if you don't work on respecting yourself on the inside, changing the outside will not make you feel better for long.

19.01.2022 Many thanks to former ACT chief minister, Kate Carnell, for sharing her story in a bid to get more federal investment in treatment for eating disorders! "Almost a million Australians suffered eating disorders last year, and more than 1900 died from their illnesses. Fewer than 30 per cent of people with eating disorders access treatment."

18.01.2022 When are we going to understand, once and for all, that shaming people, punishing them, mocking them or deriding them for being fat does not help them to lose weight!!! Nothing infuriates me more than hearing about people who feel that they are doing some sort of public service by shaming people for being overweight. IT DOES NOT HELP. End of story.

17.01.2022 Happy 2018 everyone! This is a great article if you are still considering making New Year's resolutions:

17.01.2022 I couldn't agree more: Full recovery IS possible!

14.01.2022 This is one of the best things I have read in a very long time!!! Michelle from Disrupt Your Diet wrote a response to a fitness magazine when they asked her for "better photos". It is well worth a read.

14.01.2022 An upcoming workshop may be relevant to parents and partners of your clients with eating disorders. As part of ANZAED 2017, to be held in Sydney, our Keynote sp...eaker Associate Professor Josie Geller will be holding parent and carer workshop entitled The Carers Balancing Act: Overcoming Barriers to Collaboration on Saturday 2nd September from 10.30 am to 2.45 pm. The purpose of this workshop is to help carers identify barriers to maintaining a collaborative stance with their loved one and to explore ways that mindfulness and compassion can help in overcoming these barriers. This workshop will be useful for carers of youth or adults with eating disorders. More information can be found at http://conference.2017.anzaed.org.au/carer-workshop.html See more

13.01.2022 A lot of the time when people talk or give advice about health, they only take physical health into consideration. This is particularly noticeable in discussions around food, weight and exercise, which typically involve a lot of rules or 'shoulds'. Don't forget that psychological and emotional health are equally as important as physical, so we need to take these into consideration when deciding how to feed ourselves and move our bodies.

11.01.2022 This is a fantastic article by June Alexander, about her journey from living with an eating disorder for most of her life, to full recovery. She also highlights the genetic links that are now being found and how anybody who has suffered from Anorexia can now contribute to the research simply by giving a blood sample. For more information on how you might contribute in Australia visit https://angi.qimr.edu.au/. Neighbours in NZ can visit angi.nz

11.01.2022 There are some treatment programs for binge-eating or compulsive overeating that promote the idea that it is an illness that cannot be cured. I wholeheartedly disagree with this and am of the opinion that telling people that they will never get better and will always be sick is extremely unhelpful. With appropriate, evidence-based treatment, full recovery is absolutely possible.

10.01.2022 ATTENTION FITNESS PROFESSIONALS: I have recently had the pleasure of meeting with Eleni Psillakis, a former sufferer of Anorexia Nervosa, and highly experienced personal trainer . Eleni has developed a course for personal trainers and other fitness professionals to help them learn how to identify and safely work with clients who have eating disorders. This course has been certified with Fitness Australia and I would encourage any fitness professional to attend. ... The next course will be run on Saturday May 23rd on at the Northern Beaches Community College. Please see http://brazengrowth.com.au/shop for more details.

10.01.2022 Today is World Eating Disorders Action Day. The president of the Australia and New Zealand Academy for Eating Disorders (ANZAED) released this important message: "Eating disorders are serious, treatable illnesses that result from a complex interplay of genetics, biology and environment. Eating disorders affect over 3 million Australians and 400,000 New Zealanders including people of all genders, ages, racial and ethnic identities, nationalities, abilities, sizes, and socioeco...nomic backgrounds. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness, yet many go untreated despite the fact that new research and treatments are increasingly showing positive results. As part of World Eating Disorders Action Day, ANZAED has a message for Australian and New Zealand medical and mental health professionals, parents, educators and general community: Dont watch and wait with eating disorders. Getting treatment early gives an individual the best chance of recovery. If there are signs of an eating disorder1, refer the person immediately to a qualified medical and/or mental health professional with expertise in eating disorders. Eating disorders affect girls and women, but also increasingly, boys and men. People of all body shapes and sizes and from every cultural background experience eating disorders. A pro-active, whole of community response to helping people affected by eating disorders get the treatment they need will make a real difference to the likelihood of full recovery for each individual."

09.01.2022 "All because I kept being told by society, and myself, that I was too fat and had to "do something about it", because being 20kg overweight in a society that glorifies thin as the ideal means that I am clearly evil and it's all my own fault."

08.01.2022 We need to stop treating health as a purely physical thing and take into consideration whole-person health - including psychological, emotional and spiritual health as well as physical. "In Olds' opinion, the potential stresses associated with body loathing are much more harmful than someone who is carrying a bit of extra weight but is otherwise fit and healthy."

08.01.2022 Shape Your Mind is excited to welcome Rebecca Anderson to the team! Rebecca is an accredited practising dietitian specialising in the treatment of individuals with eating disorders and disordered eating.

08.01.2022 "What should I do if my child is overweight?" Is a question that we frequently get asked. Thank you to The Moderation Movement for this wonderful video

06.01.2022 Our understanding of eating disorders is slowly improving but there are still so many misconceptions. "Anorexia nervosa has the highest rate of death of any mental illness. Rates of suicide among those with an eating disorder anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder are up to 31 times higher than the general population."

06.01.2022 Project Heal is a fantastic not-for-profit organisation doing great things for the eating disorder community. They are hosting a fundraiser next Saturday February 28th, and they need everyone's support! If you are unable to attend, please consider making a donation to help them do their wonderful work.

05.01.2022 Christmas can be a stressful time of year for people with eating disorders. Here are some great tips from Mamamia and the Butterfly Foundation:

05.01.2022 This situation desperately needs to change. "Patients can access Medicare rebates for up to 10 sessions of psychological therapy per year under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, and five sessions with a dietician under the separate Chronic Disease Management Plan. But the best available evidence shows a patient with bulimia who begins treatment early needs a minimum of 20 psychological and 10 dietetic sessions per year. A patient with anorexia nervosa or an eating disorder with complications of comorbid conditions, including depression and anxiety, need a minimum of 50 psychological and 20 dietetic sessions per year."

04.01.2022 I found this piece so powerful! "This is why the ad campaigns that tell everyone they're beautiful are so dangerous. They link beauty with worthiness and kindness, doing nothing for the people thrust into the world knowing that simply isn't true. Instead, we should teach people, especially women, that their beauty doesn't define them. We need to teach them that their worth comes from much more than their appearance." I also believe that there is too much pressure on women to ..."love their bodies" - Rather than be helpful, I think this can be a huge obstacle to living a fulfilling life, as we are still focusing all our energy on appearance. Whether you like your appearance or not, if we can fill our lives with other meaningful, enjoyable and fulfilling pursuits, then it just matters less whether we like the way we look or not. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts!

04.01.2022 Body image is a significant issue for men too:

02.01.2022 This is an excellent description of what clinical depression feels like, and how it is not something that you can just 'snap out of':

01.01.2022 I love this article by Kasey Edwards "Living in a culture that's obsessed with thin and demonises fat, I had made the mistake of thinking that we can cure body hatred by changing our bodies. I had bought into those messages and assumed that the only thing standing between me and absolute bliss on my wedding day was a couple of kilograms. But it wasn't my body that I needed to change. It was my thoughts."
