22.01.2022 The first results of the largest study (affectionately named(!) The American Gut Project) to have ever investigated the human microbiome are in! They used whats called citizen science the practice in which the public contributes to research by offering their time and personal data up for analysis. As part of the project, participants paid $99 for a kit that collected fecal, oral, and skin samples of bacteria. There were some important implications from the findings in ...several areas including: -importance of a diverse, plant-based diet. -gut bacteria and mental health. Medical News Today reports: First, the results suggest that a more diverse plant-based diet makes for a more bacterially diverse gut. Specifically, those who consumed more than 30 different types of plant each week had much more diverse microbiomes than those who consumed only 10 or fewer types of plant weekly. Second, the results demonstrated that people who reported mental health issues had more bacteria in common with other people who reported similar problems than they did with the controls. Wow! Interesting findings that are just the beginnings of improving our understanding of the intimate relationship between to our mental health and the gut microbiome and how a varied diet influences diversity of the same. Stay tuned!
