25.01.2022 When children are on their swimming journey and are starting drills like kicking on their side, they quite often look to the front or roll over on their back instead of the looking to the side of pool. We use this drill to get children use to being on their side and then starting the body rotation for bubbles and breathing. We work with them to get them comfortable kicking on their side before starting crawlstroke (freestyle). Some children give up at this stage as they learn to master this new skill. Please give lots of encouragement and ring the office if you have any questions.

25.01.2022 Due to government mandated shut down, Everton Park, Kallangur, Morayfield, Warner, Taigum, Stretton and Logan Reserve will be closed from 6pm tonight and reopen Tuesday 12th of January. A credit will be applied to your account. Thank you for your understanding and stay safe.

25.01.2022 Look mum I swam to the step by myself on the noodle!. All children love you watching their classes. Your children are constantly looking up to see if you are watching them so you can give them a thumbs up or a clap.

24.01.2022 Did you know, cold weather by itself does not cause the common cold. Being exposed to people suffering from the common cold can cause us to become sick. But simply being exposed to cooler air temperatures does not. For swimmers, this should be taken a step further: Being wet, in colder weather, doesnt cause someone to become infected with the common cold virus. Coming to swimming lessons during the colder months will not make them sick and our pools are nice and warm all year around. With our wonderful make-up system for a missed class we ask that customers stay home if they or their children are sick. 24.01.2022 I have found a lengthy but very information post on 10 water safety tips from a mum who investigates drownings, it has a lot of really good information. From how to teach your children about different depths in the pool to how your child can get away from another child grabbing them in the water and dragging them under. It really is worth a read.. https://www.facebook.com/aquaticsafetyconnection/posts/369137320412367?__tn__=K-R

23.01.2022 We love seeing your babies first lesson, this little one is enjoying the pool with her dad in the water.

23.01.2022 We hope everyone had a wonderful Fathers Day

22.01.2022 How much do your children love swimming lessons? Our teachers love teaching your children, they are dedicated and love seeing the joy on their faces when they achieve new goals. We have a fantastic make-up system, please do not bring your children if they are sick or a person waiting in the parents room is sick, if our teachers are unwell they are not able to come to work. This effects the entire swim school. If someone coming to the swim school is sick please do not come to lessons, you can take your child out through My SSS. You have 6 months to use the make-up classes and the expiry date can be renewed on My SSS.

22.01.2022 Please remember children are very curious around water of any description, including dog water bowls. Having a friend around today her little 13 month old kept finding any water around the house and the dog water bowls were her favorite, they were put safely put of reach. But dont forget your four legged friend still needs their water. Water safety is a priority, teach your children to swim from an early age so they learn to respect the water and always watch them around any body of water. Contact us today www.shapland.com.au/locations

22.01.2022 Sometimes children need to sit and watch for their first lesson, taking time adjust to their new teacher and their new water environment. Give them time and give the office a call and we can help with tips and ideas to help your child settle into the lesson faster.

21.01.2022 Importance of learning how to rocket correctly. Chin on chest, eyes looking down, arms out straight pointing to the other side of the pool while working on their six beat kick across the pool. With the correct kick and body position in the water they will be able to get across the pool without a breath. Getting this kicking action correct early will set them up for a perfect kick with crawlstroke (freestyle) and backstroke.

21.01.2022 Why is teaching children to swim not only a life long skill but good for them too? Swimming benefits their health, enhances flexibility, balance and skill development. Swimming improves social skills through social engagement meeting others with similar interests. ... Swimming teaches safety skills with a life long skill that every child should learn, but please always supervise your children. Book now www.shapland.com.au/locations #Aquastream See more

21.01.2022 Closed for Queen’s Birthday Monday. See you on Tuesday. You have not been charged for this class.

20.01.2022 Floating is an important skill children start to learn early in their lessons. We make it fun and not forced.

20.01.2022 Winter is a great time to try to get your ideal lesson time. If your children are going to school next year maybe try to change them now, if there is a class available, and get them into a routine before school starts. https://www.shapland.com.au//getting-your-ideal-lesson-time

19.01.2022 Why should children learn to swim? Swimming lessons help your children with confidence which helps with self-esteem even outside of the pool. Swimming is a great way to exercise all year around, helps with hand eye coordination and muscle tone, water safety & social skills. It is a sport that could them save a life one day. But please remember adult supervision no matter what the age, and have fun!

18.01.2022 Babies love being in the water with their parents. Even at this age we work on balance and breath control in every lesson. Don't they just learn balance and breath control and understand the water holds them up? No, as children start walking, they are learning about gravity and the effects it has on their body out of the pool, and when the get into the wa...ter and the gravitational forces are reduced, they struggle with even the basic skill of standing in say chest deep water. That can be very scary for a child. Teething or a cold can also send off their balance. If your child comes into the water upset, go back to balance then breath control. Sitting and walking on the the steps, letting them come off the steps to you only when they are ready. With your continued support, they will get through the little hurdles they may experience in their swimming journey. See more

17.01.2022 Once young children have the basic swimming skills, it takes a while for them to mature and become stronger, please dont give up during this time. Give your children lots of encouragement and the more their coordination and skills increase they will master the swimming stroke they are working on. Please remember we teach each child to their individual skill level. If you have a question about your childs progress please ring the office of the Shapland Swim School you attend and they can help you further. www.shapland.com.au/locations

17.01.2022 Working without goggles and opening their eyes in the water is a great way for a child to learn to swim. This young one looks like they have seen the step and are just starting to lift their head. We like all our children to swim without goggles for all or most of the lesson where possible. If a child falls into a body of water and they have only ever swam with googles they could panic as they are not used to the water getting in their eyes. Even at home please practice non goggle time.

16.01.2022 Why do we spend time walking in the water? Walking gives your children balance in the water. It does not matter what age they are walking is an important part of learning to trust the water. Please remember that walking on land is very different to walking in the water, on land you have gravity holding you down onto the ground, the water makes you buoyant and for non swimmers this can be very scary at first. Please read Chriss post on floating and balance for more information. https://www.shapland.com.au/b/20190906/floating-and-balance

14.01.2022 Crawling or walking on the mat helps children with balance, and they love it!

14.01.2022 Are you ready for a swim? That looks like a thumbs up to us. Please remember swimming lessons are skill for life, it increases confidence, improves fitness and its fun!

12.01.2022 Getting a flutter 6 beat kick right takes practice. You will see we work hard with your children after they have learnt to come up for a breath to get the correct kick. Having this foundation step correct is important, please remember it can take time for some children and encourage them along the way. ... . . . . . . . . #shaplandswimschoolwarner #australianownedbusiness #loveofswimming #swimminglessonsarepayingoff See more

12.01.2022 Watch this beautiful video, swimming really is for life. Walter Strohmeyer is 90 and swimming has made is body feel young and when he is down swimming lifts his spirit. Being able to swim is a life long life saving skill. https://vimeo.com/337823655

12.01.2022 If your child falls in the pool do they know how to get back to the side and get out of the pool? Do they wear googles at home all the time? If your child falls in the pool without goggles they can panic if they have never had time without them. When you are at swimming lessons and in a pool at home please make sure they have no goggle time so they do not get addicted to goggles, this time without goggles could save their life one day. call us now to book in lessons, www.shapland.com.au/locations

12.01.2022 Our steps are designed at different levels to help children walk in a depth they are comfortable with to build confidence and balance in the water.

11.01.2022 Coming up for a breath can take some children a while to master. In the younger children, 3-4 years, after they have learnt to hold the water with their hands and feet, they can then put enough pressure on the water to lift their chin out of the water to take a breath. Once a child has the physical capabilities required to rotate their head for a breath then they are ready to learn a more advanced technique, ...which most people would recognized as Freestyle. A common fault in the younger age group when learning to take a breath is they lift their chin too far out of the water. This drops their feet and they start treading water. In this position in can be hard for young children to get their face back in the water and their feet in the correct position again. They then need to take another breath quite quickly, dropping their legs again and they don't really move anywhere. We are constantly there with them, encouraging them to keep their chin on the water to take a breath, while holding the water with their hands and feet and moving forward. The more they practice the faster they will master this difficult skill. Please be in the pool with your children at home at all times, helping them and always within hands reach, not relying on flotation devices as they give them a false sense of security. Give the office a call and we will give you tips on how you can help them at home. See more

10.01.2022 Please remember children can take a while to trust the water. Learning to stand in the pool for some children is a very new experience. 10.01.2022 We have quite a few children come to us scared of swimming lessons or water in general. You may need to take small steps with introducing them to the water, you can start this process at home. Start with small amounts of water from your fingertips over their head letting... small amounts of water run over their face and head. If they get concerned with this small step, don't get a face washer or towel to dry their face, distract them with a toy in the bath or shower. You can also get a small watering can and run this over their hands, shoulders and getting your child to tip it over your head then their own. Slowly desensitizing them to the feeling of the water on their face, when they are ready they will then have the confidence to put their face in the water of their own accord. Walking in different depths, finding their ideal leave to get their balance is the reason Shapland Swim School pools are designed with 8 different levels, this way we can find the level that best suits your child to build their confidence that the water will hold them up. Call your local Shapland's now to get more information as to how we can help your child over come their fears and learn the important life saving skill of swimming, go to www.shapland.com.au/loactions to find your nearest school. 10.01.2022 Swimming lessons open holiday opportunities for you and your children, you can enjoy holidays at the beach or playing in the resort pool. Adult supervision is a must and it is a great time to be in the water with your children having fun.

09.01.2022 As teachers we are constantly finding new ways to keep your children entertained while learning and wanting to come back each week. We love hearing how your children role play at home, they are their swimming teacher and their siblings are them in pool. One of our parents mentioned that their younger daughter was a bit cranky at home and had no energy, her older daughter said she must need new batteries, her mum looked at her and said new batteries? She replied yes when my arms and legs won't work at swimming my teacher puts new batteries in my arms and legs and they work again. Love it.

08.01.2022 Swimming lessons start with balance at any age, walking and feeling how the water holds them up, learning to trust the water, then moving onto breath control. These are the two first and most important steps in swimming. These steps can not be rushed or forced or the child or adult experiencing the pool for the first time with get a fear of the water. Let your children play and walk in different depths, gaining confidence as they go. At Shaplands we have 8 different levels in our pool to find the perfect level for your child to start their swimming journey from.

08.01.2022 This little one found a toy out in the pool and is bringing it back to the steps with the teacher safely. 07.01.2022 Please remember that a child who learns to swim at a young age develops a lifelong skill that can save their life, and give them a skill that can keep them fit not matter their age. Even at 73 Chris Shapland is still swimming almost daily, I think if he could he would swim daily even when the pool is far too cold for most of us! Please remember that adult supervision is required at all times children are in or around water.

07.01.2022 Children develop many skills when learning to swim Co-Ordination is one those skills that helps them grow and succeed in every aspect of their life.

06.01.2022 Is your child having difficulty mastering a stroke? Learning to swim is not easy for many children and they can become disheartened that they have been tying so hard and just not getting it right. Please dont let them give up. We only have 3 students in a class so we can work with them as an individual. As teachers we are always encouraging and helping them learn at their own pace. With lots of praise and encouragement they will get through this hurdle in their swimming and learn to love it again. https://www.shapland.com.au//why-does-my-child-not-appear-

06.01.2022 There has never been a better time to book in swimming lessons. Winter is an ideal time to learn to swim, your children are not in the pool at home or at the beach or lagoon and are not being exposed to water. Swimming during winter keeps up your childrens stamina and gets them out and about. Our pools are nice and warm. Swimming lessons are a great activity that are a worthwhile investment, it is the only sport that could save your childs life one day. Watching your children improve and develop, gain confidence and skills is a rewarding experience for you and your child. Swimming lessons can boost your childs health and social skills and can make them feel happier. Book now to find your ideal time. www.shapland.com.au

05.01.2022 The mat is a safe place to practice falling in the water forwards, backwards and sideways in case your child ever falls or is knocked into the water they have already done this in lessons.

05.01.2022 An important part of learning to swim is to swim back to the steps with arms extended to grab hold of the step first then put their feet down. Why hands first? If they put their feet down first and slip off the bottom step they will go under the water and could struggle to get back to the step. If they put their arms out and grab the top step first they can pull themselves up out of the water to get breath.

05.01.2022 When a child starts swimming lessons as a baby, in regular weekly lessons, they develop basic skills, help prevent water fears and provide more movement opportunities in the water for your baby than what they can get on land. If your child starts swimming lessons as a baby it will help them to be able to trust the water will hold them up and put their face in the water of their own choice and start to move through the water. If they start swimming lessons at a later age it can take a while for your child to get their balance and put their eyes in the water of their own accord. Some can take a long time as they can be very afraid of the water. Chris has a great blog on what to do before you start swimming lessons. https://www.shapland.com.au/swimmi/home-development-program

05.01.2022 Please remember that the learn to swim process is a long process, and the more stops and starts out of the water will slow your childs progress. Learning each skill takes time, trying to rush through the progression will only hinder your childs progress and they will need to go back and learn a missed skill, like a floating or a 6 beat kick even holding the water with their hands and feet correctly. Please dont ask the teachers to do more, they know where your child is up to and what they need to work on to progress to the next skill. https://www.shapland.com.au//2011/moving-through-the-water
