21.01.2022 Parental Anxiety . It's a bittersweet day today as kids go back to school. A lot of parents are anxious about a variety of issues: is it safe for my child to be back at school? How will my child cope with the new normal? How will my child cope after being at home so long? . .... If you are worried about the safety of the school environment, communicate with the school- ask them what measures they have in place to safe guard your child. Don't be afraid to ask questions. . Do your research- there have been studies conducted overseas about the spread of coronavirus in schools. Read them, understand the facts for yourself so you can arm yourself with as much understanding as possible to decide how you feel about your child at school. . Explain to your child that the state of play will be different back at school. Include the "why's" (covid19) & the "how's" (social distancing, increased sanitisation etc) Having this conversation with them is important as it will give them the knowledge they need to answer any questions they may have. . Encourage your child to ask questions, either to you or their teacher. . Make sure a routine is set in order for both parent & child to be able to know what comes next for a smooth transition. Routine is predictable. Most kids like the security of knowing what comes next. . While your child is at school, instead of reminding yourself how much you miss them, go for a walk, treat yourself to a quiet breakfast in a cafe, or do something else that make you feel good. You've endured weeks of homeschooling! You more than deserve it. . When you pick your child up from school, do something they enjoy with them. Let them know they were missed, but also talk positively about their school environment. . . . . . . #anxiety #anxiousparents #backtoschool #coronavirus #covid19 #staysafe #communicate #bekind #treatyourself #routine #research #educateyourself #knowthefacts #knowledge #newnormal #therapy #counselling #mindset #mentalhealth #thoughts #newweek #newday #school #sharasmithcounselling See more

13.01.2022 Intentional thoughts . . Have you ever minimised the praise people give you to focus on the negative? Why does the negative seem bigger than the good? .... . I asked my 7 year old to identify some positive traits about me. He couldn't stop! When it came to the negative traits, he was hard pressed to think of one. However when he did, I thought "really? Am I?!" It's really not a big deal, as a parent I need to wear the bossy hat sometimes. However it reminded me of this topic. . . We tend to spend more time & energy processing negative thoughts & experiences which make them feel bigger in our minds. It's easy to think of all the things that could go wrong, which ball you'll fumble & drop next. . Try to proactively take the time to concentrate on the good things about yourself & your situation. . When you think a negative thought, follow that with with 2 positive thoughts. E.g. My son thinks I'm bossy but he's also grateful for me & needs me to help him navigate through life. . The more intentional you are with your thoughts, the more successful you'll be in minimising the negative thoughts & focusing on the positive. . The size of the negative is all in your head! . . . I saw an amazing video a few weeks ago about this but now I can't find the account or video of the person who did this. So I've had to come up with my own interpretation #actingskills If you know who it is, please tag them. . . . . . . . #friday #positivevibes #weekend #negativethoughts #minimise #intention #counselling #smallbusiness #workfromhome #mumlife #motherhood #parenthood #therapistsofinstagram #goodtherapy #lifestyle #success #thoughts #quotes #insecurity #selfjudgement #breathe #loveyourself #kids #sharasmithcounselling

11.01.2022 Understanding Racism . . Obviously as a woman of colour, I don’t need to state my opinions on racism; I’ve experienced a lot of it. .... . Without a doubt there is behaviour that is clearly racist & unacceptable but there are also a plethora of examples that sit in the grey area. . . What is racist to some is not racist to others of the same group. This is also the case in other areas for example feminism or disability. So over the next couple of days, I want to add to the conversation by giving some clarity & helping people understand the different types of racism & hopefully get them thinking about this topic & engage with the information out there. What is Racism? An antagonistic belief of and towards a particular race or colour of people that are believed to be superior/inferior to your race or colour. . . What is Racial Prejudice? A belief about people of another colour or race that isn’t based on real life experience or logical reasoning. . . What is Racial Discrimination? Engaging in discriminatory behaviour against someone or a group of people due to their race or colour. . . What is Racial Stereotype? Generalised ideologies about a group or class of people. . . These terms are sometimes used interchangeably but carry slightly different meanings. . . What is happening in the world right now can be a catalyst for change. It starts with education and understanding. I will be posting later on in the day the different types of racism. . . . . #staytuned #racism #educateyourself #understand #discrimination #womanofcolour #prejudice #difference #acceptance #stereotypes #conversation #georgefloyd #rip #riot #violenceisnottheanswer #staysafe #bekind #thefuture #change #therapy #counselling #survival #sharasmithcounselling
