21.01.2022 World No Alcohol Day Friday, 2 October 2020 India proposed officially at the 2008 World Health Assembly in Geneva that Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary could be a dry day globally and that October 2 be declared ‘World No Alcohol Day’.... The proposal came on a day when all 193 WHO member countries signed a resolution to reduce alcohol related harm. WHO spent the next two years developing a global alcohol strategy. With rather small attention ‘No Alcohol Day’ is a part of a WHO effort to raise awareness and reduce the abuse of alcohol. Did you know? The World Health Organization (WHO) stablishes that men can drink a maximum of 30g of alcohol a day (280g/week), while women may drink as much as 20g/day (140g/week). A greater consumption could be indicative of a alcohol dependence.

18.01.2022 International Day of Non-Violence Friday, 2 October 2020 International non-violence day is observed to spread public awareness on peace, love and harmonious co-existence.... It is celebrated on the birthday of a man who helped bring forward the notion of non-violence, and the tremendous impact this form of social response has had all over the world in the last century. On the International Day of Non-Violence, created by the United Nations in 2007, we look back on the influence of an Indian activist born Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi but known the world over as Mahatma Gandhi. The International Day of Non-Violence honors how Gandhi’s work and legacy has impacted global, non-violent protest. The UN has good reason to use Gandhi’s birthday to celebrate International Day of Non-Violence. Gandhi’s commitment to India’s independence and his methods have been the cornerstone of civil and human rights initiatives all over the world. Put simply, Gandhi saw it as completely irrational to use violence to achieve peace, but rather, just means lead to just ends. This is a lesson we can all take to heart.

16.01.2022 NAIDOC Week Sun 8 November - 15 November 2020 Always Was, Always Will Be. Always Was, Always Will Be recognises that First Nations people have occupied and cared for this continent for over 65,000 years.... We are spiritually and culturally connected to this country. This country was criss-crossed by generations of brilliant Nations. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people were Australia’s first explorers, first navigators, first engineers, first farmers, first botanists, first scientists, first diplomats, first astronomers and first artists. Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories. The First Peoples engraved the world’s first maps, made the earliest paintings of ceremony and invented unique technologies. We built and engineered structures - structures on Earth - predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge. Our adaptation and intimate knowledge of Country enabled us to endure climate change, catastrophic droughts and rising sea levels. Always Was, Always Will Be. acknowledges that hundreds of Nations and our cultures covered this continent. All were managing the land - the biggest estate on earth - to sustainably provide for their future. Through ingenious land management systems like fire stick farming we transformed the harshest habitable continent into a land of bounty. NAIDOC Week 2020 acknowledges and celebrates that our nation’s story didn’t begin with documented European contact whether in 1770 or 1606 - with the arrival of the Dutch on the western coast of the Cape York Peninsula. The very first footprints on this continent were those belonging to First Nations peoples. Our coastal Nations watched and interacted with at least 36 contacts made by Europeans prior to 1770. Many of them resulting in the charting of the northern, western and southern coastlines of our lands and our waters. For us, this nation’s story began at the dawn of time. NAIDOC 2020 invites all Australians to embrace the true history of this country a history which dates back thousands of generations. It’s about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. We want all Australians to celebrate that we have the oldest continuing cultures on the planet and to recognise that our sovereignty was never ceded. Always Was, Always Will Be.

Let’s remember the fathers whom have since passed their spirit shines within our hearts; let us remember also the dutiful men who have taken on the role of a father to children that are not their own; and fathers, step-fathers & grandfathers everywhere for all the acts of kindness, caring and love that they share with us everyday. Dads are most ordinary men turned by love into heroes, adventurers, story-tellers, and singers of song.

13.01.2022 World Philosophy Day Monday 19 November 2020 UNESCO established World Philosophy Day for several reasons. First, to simply underscore the importance of philosophy and philosophies historically and in today’s ever-changing world.... Second, to give occasion to awareness campaigns that promote philosophy as a form of critical thought and problem-solving that can help answer some of life’s toughest questions. Third, World Philosophy Day is meant to especially encourage the teaching of philosophy as a discipline academically as well as in more informal settings. It is meant to promote philosophical debates, diversity, tolerance of differing opinions, and respect for human rights and dignity. On World Philosophy Day, let us highlight the role of philosophy in modern life and emphasize ways philosophy can contribute to practical problems like world peace, world hunger, and environmental protection.

12.01.2022 With Overdose Awareness Day coming up on 31 August, APSU at SHARC are producing a podcast to commemorate people lost to overdose. We are hoping that members of our community will agree to a brief recorded phone call to offer a remembrance of someone near to them. We will only ask these two questions: 1. Describe the person you lost and their relationship to you 2. Tell us something you would like people to know about them You won't be identified, but your voice will help to mark the day and counter the stigma that is often attached to these tragic events. If you're interested in contributing, please email [email protected]

11.01.2022 GLOBAL PEER SUPPORT CELEBRATION DAY (GPSCD) Thursday, October 15 2020 The idea of a ‘national day’ for peer supporters began to take shape at the 2014 Annual International Association of Peer Supporters (iNAPS) conference in Atlanta, Georgia. This day of celebration, recognition, and reflection began when, the then National Director of Peer Support Services with the Veteran’s Administration, Dan O’Brien-Mazza discussed his idea at a membership meeting. His idea sparked much e...nthusiasm from other iNAPS members. We now have Global Peer Support Celebration Day (GPSCD), an annual celebration of peer supporters, peer support, and recognising their work in helping their peers with mental health, addictions, and or trauma-related challenges move along the continuum of recovery and inclusion into communities of his/her choosing. This annual, worldwide event takes place annually on the third Thursday in October.

11.01.2022 World Mental Health Day Saturday, 10 October 2020 Presented by the World Federation of Mental Health, World Mental Health Day is held n October 10, 2020. The goal is to help raise mental health awareness. ... During this week, National Mental Health week, each of us can make a contribution to ensure that people dealing with problems concerning mental health can live better lives with dignity. The Dilemma Every year one adult in four, along with one child in ten, will have a mental health issue. These conditions can profoundly affect literally millions of lives, affecting the capability of these individuals to make it through the day, to sustain relationships, and to maintain work. The stigma attached to mental health causes a damaging, albeit ill-informed, attitude, making it more difficult for those affected to pursue help. According to UK estimates, only about one-fourth of those with mental health problems undergo ongoing treatment. By stark contrast, the vast majority of those affected with these problems are faced with a variety of issues, ranging from isolation to uncertainty on where to get help or information, to relying on the informal support of family, friends or colleagues. Raising Awareness The best way to deal with this stigma is through facts and a better understanding of mental health problems. From identifying the causes, pinpointing solutions, and ultimately recognising that we are really dealing with medical issues.

10.01.2022 Gambling Harm Awareness Week 2020 19 - 25 October 2020 Harm from gambling isn’t just about losing money. Gambling can affect how you feel. It can also affect your self-esteem, relationships, physical and mental health. It doesn’t matter how often or much a person gambles, the negative effects of gambling can happen to anyone.... According to research, 630,000 Victorian adults are affected by gambling harm, either their own or from someone else’s gambling. Gambling harm is often hidden, and the effects not spoken about because it can be a sensitive issue that makes people feel uneasy. That’s why, as part of Gambling Harm Awareness Week, we’re focusing on the theme TALK. SHARE. SUPPORT. Gambling affects more people than you realise. The effects of gambling are often hidden and not spoken about because it can be a sensitive issue that makes people feel uncomfortable. Anyone can experience the negative effects of gambling, but it’s not something we talk about openly. When we talk about gambling harm as a community, it makes it easier for those affected to reach out to someone. Talking is the first step in reducing gambling harm in our community. Sharing the effects that gambling may be having on you, or those around you, can provide relief and make it more manageable. Seeking support, or to supporting someone can make a crucial difference. Sharing personal experiences of gambling harm helps break down the stigma. This 1925 October 2020, let's TALK. SHARE. SUPPORT. and prevent gambling harm together. #TalkShareSupport #Gamblingharm
