18.01.2022 Upon request, the staff here at one of our refuges provided a client with paints and a canvas to ease her mind and help her relax. Over the days of her being accommodated with us we watched her create this artwork. This is how the client explained her painting to us: The white circle in the middle is us here at the refuge. The client described the bright white as a new beginning, moving away from the dark blue and black ring that surrounds the light The six white rings ar...ound the circle represent each employee that works here. The blue circles represent the waterholes and the journey she took to get to us. Client stated that the red, yellow, pink and purple flowers that surround the painting show the current season, Spring. Upon exiting, the client stated that we had helped her so much during her stay. She wished for the painting to remain in the Centre for all to see.

12.01.2022 Addressing Elder Abuse Between 2019 and 2030, the number of persons aged 60 years or over is projected to grow by 38%, from 1 billion to 1.4 billion, globally outnumbering youth, and this increase will be the greatest and the most rapid in the developing world, and recognizing that greater attention needs to be paid to the specific challenges affecting older persons, including in the field of human rights. Elder abuse is a problem that exists in both developing and developed ...countries yet is typically underreported globally. Prevalence rates or estimates exist only in selected developed countries ranging from 1% to 10%. Although the extent of elder mistreatment is unknown, its social and moral significance is obvious. As such, it demands a global multifaceted response, one which focuses on protecting the rights of older persons. Approaches to define, detect and address elder abuse need to be placed within a cultural context and considered along side culturally specific risk factors. For example, in some traditional societies, older widows are subjected to forced marriages while in others, isolated older women are accused of witchcraft. From a health and social perspectives, unless both primary health care and social service sectors are well equipped to identify and deal with the problem, elder abuse will continue to be underdiagnosed and overlooked.
12.01.2022 There are ways to save money on food without compromising flavour, freshness, or the ideals of organic, etc. The result is that you will eat well without spending a fortune, and feel good about what you eat too. Strategy #1: Plan Meals Yes, the "organized one". Planning meals is your first step in saving money on food. Its a good idea to develop a system. Try using the following categories to cover five nights out of seven, and then plan for leftovers the other two nights...: meat (this could be red meat or poultry), fish, beans, vegetarian, or pasta. The bean and pasta recipes can include meat in them, but preferably as a flavouring agent, not a main note. Each week write meal ideas in a notebook with the shopping list on the "notes" side. That way you can reference past weeks meals to inspire me. Strategy #2: Cook from Scratch The principle here is to shop for ingredients, not processed foods. So I buy ground beef, canned tomatoes, and chilli powder instead of a taco kit or frozen burritos. I buy chicken, onions, and pasta instead of chicken noodle soup. It does take extra time, but I really enjoy the challenge of learning to make new things like tortillas, and of finding simpler and more delicious bread recipes. Its a very frugal hobby as long as you follow the next principle. Strategy #3: Keep it Simple These days, food porn abounds, but it turns out Gordon Ramsey is right: the truth is, fresh high-quality food prepared simply will taste fantastic and doesnt need fancy distractions to make it a good meal. There are many ways to implement this strategy. For example, we often have soup and toast for dinner, and dont feel lacking for it. I love pan sauces, but try for recipes that use things I have on hand. Keep it simple and let the food speak for itself, and you wont end up with expensive herbs & condiments languishing in the fridge. Which brings me to . . . Strategy #4: Reduce Food Waste It doesnt matter how much you saved on that loaf of bread, or how cheaply you made that soup; if it ends up in the garbage, you are throwing money away. This hit home for me a few weeks ago when I looked in my fridge after a week away and saw it was nearly full-of rotting vegetables and infested leftovers. Eating up leftovers promptly has been an important part of this strategy--if they arent enough for the next days dinner, I make a point of packing them for lunch. My freezer is another great help. If something is nearing its best-before date, I can slip it into a Ziploc baggie and put it in the freezer for inclusion in some future soup, sauce, or casserole. The point is, look at any food thrown away as dollars in the garbage, and you will find the motivation to reduce food waste.

09.01.2022 Of all the reasons why people choose to grow their own food, perhaps today the most important one is a financial reason. Food is expensive. Organic food is even more expensive! If you want to eat healthy and you want to stick to a budget, then you CAN grow your own organic food in your own garden. There is nothing more satisfying than a beautiful and productive garden, but gardening doesnt have to be as difficult as you may think. Whether youre all thumbs, or looking to ...become a green thumb, here is our guide to gardening for beginners. Your garden site needs to have more than six hours of full sunshine, 8 hours is better. It is best to have a site that is reasonable level. North facing areas are best for main vegetable gardens but some vegetables/fruit will grow in shade or part shade such as silver beet, rhubarb, raspberries, strawberries and a variety of herbs such as mints, parsley and chives. If you are planning a fair size vegetable plot, it is a good idea to complete it in stages or your back will give out before you have completed your dream! A gardener who wants only a small bed might choose to hand dig with a shovel or garden fork. Digging lawn is very hard work. You can make that much easier by covering the lawn with newspaper (about 6 sheets deep) and allowing the lack of light to kill the lawn runners. All grass and weeds need to be removed as well as their roots. Any rocks larger than an egg. Clods of soil need to broken up and the surface needs to be raked until it is even. Once your plot has been turned over you need to check your soil. Most vegetables grow best in neutral to slightly acid soil. To grow well, the top soil (the layer of soil where most roots grow) should be six or more inches deep and contain substantial amount of organic material. Usually, organic rich soils are dark brown in colour and contain earthworms. Nearly all soils benefit from the addition of organic material. It loosens clay soils, improves moisture holding ability of sandy soil, and increases the nutrient level of any soil. Organic soil is compost, leaf mulch, straw, hay, anything that has once lived. You can use shredded newspaper, leaves, compost from your compost heap etc. Compost or manure can then be spread over the garden and worked into the top layer of the soil. Improving the soil is a continuing process so expect to add more organic material each season. With the soil ready, you can lay out rows. Drive stakes in the ground every 20 feet and tie a string between them if you want a straight row. Rows need to be parallell to the slope of the terrain if the bed is not level. Make them 3 or 4 feet apart so that you can walk between them and give each plant room to grow without crowding. Why not try it, you may find its fun, certainly tastes better than shop brought AND has none of the nasties that bulk growing tends to have!

06.01.2022 Ever wonder what we do? Here is one life story from one courageous lady.... I have lived in the Wheatbelt for 25 years. I contacted Share & Cares Safe at Home Program because I was experiencing Family and Domestic Violence. I was terrified for the safety of myself and the children. I felt like a sitting duck in my own home. I was scared as my ... ex-husband had keys for my doors. The Safe at Home ladies supported me with going to the Court House and I was granted a Family Violence Restraining Order. The Safe at Home Program also paid to have my locks changed! I now feel I can rest a lot easier in my own home. I can read and watch movies and I feel secure knowing my ex-husband cant get in. Its taken a long time to get back to my old self but with the support of the Safe at Home Program as well as my friends, I can live a "normal life. Ive gone back to the sports I love to play and am enjoying my freedom, friends and my life! I know I can call on the Safe at Home ladies any time for information and emotional support.
