15.01.2022 **NEWS FLASH** Sharing Shed Melbourne Inc.* is preparing a funding bid to pilot its first shed in Moonee Valley, and we need your show of support. Wed love it if you could complete this brief survey and share it with your family, friends and colleagues. We want to hear from you wherever you live, provided youre in metropolitan Melbourne and are willing and able to come to Moonee Valley to borrow and return goods. As an added bonus, survey respondents go into a draw to win ...a copy of the book Waste Not by Erin Rhoads! https://survey.websurveycreator.com/s.aspx ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ *WHAT IS SHARING SHED MELBOURNE? Sharing Shed Melbourne Inc. (SSM) is a non-profit incorporated association made up of a group of locals who believe we can live more by owning less. SSM has 3 focuses: share - learn - repair. SHARE: Were inviting people to donate their underutilised goods (tents, sewing machines, dehydrators etc) so that the wider community can borrow what they need, when they need it. Well be offering low-cost memberships and borrowing rights so it will be much cheaper to access stuff, instead of buying it. LEARN: We want to encourage local "everyday experts" to share their abundance of talent, skill and knowledge by running community-led workshops. REPAIR: We will continue to support free monthly repair sessions where people can learn how to keep their cherished and useful things in good nick. To find out more, and to subscribe to our mailing list, head over to http://sharingshedmelbourne.org.au. You can also find us on Instagram and Pinterest.

15.01.2022 What is a Sharing Shed? A Sharing Shed (or Library of Things) is a place where community members come to borrow useful but infrequently-used items like lawn mowers, gardening tools, tents and camping gear or perhaps specialty non-frequently used fun items (board games, scooter). It is also a place where we can come together to share knowledge, skills and ideas about how to use or create experiences with these items (e.g. how to choose and set up a good campsite, use a d...ehydrator for preserving summer harvests or host a board game night). Sharing Shed Melbourne is built by the community, for the community and wed love for you to come on board! Join us at our AGM on 14th October https://www.facebook.com/events/757586914696787/ Well be electing our new committee! Therell also be some fun activities and nibbles.

08.01.2022 UPDATE: Council passed the motion (below) unanimously with the addition of two additional points: to have an agreed evaluation framework at the onset of any initiative; and to report back to an ordinary council meeting in 18 months time. The potential for a sharing shed to connect in with other community initiatives, and to evolve and spread to other neighbourhoods, was noted. Thank you Moonee Valley City Council for your support! The discussion ran for about 10 minutes and c...an be watched here, from 1:14: https://www.facebook.com/mooneevalleycc/videos/724572274687802/ Well let you know how this initiative evolves... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ FLASH FORWARD: Following Cr Nicole Marshalls notice of motion (pictured below), Moonee Valley City Council staff have now prepared a (39-page) report on setting up a library of things in the municipality. The report will be put to councillors on Tuesday evening, 12 November 2019 where the following resolution will be considered: That Council resolves to: a. Note the attached Moonee Valley Library of Things, Issues and Opportunities Report (Attachment A circulated separately). b. Note the role library of things/sharing sheds can play in fostering community connections, promoting alternative models of consumption underpinned by the principles of refuse, reduce, re-use and repair with the local community and other levels of government. c. Provide support for a community-run and operated library of things/sharing shed within Moonee Valley. d. Request Council officers to continue exploring opportunities to partner with a non-profit organisation emerging through its Sustainability Champions program [ie Sharing Shed Melbourne Inc.]. e. Note that Councils support for a community-run and operated library of things/sharing shed could include provision of space, potential funding through Councils grants program, advice and promotional support. f. Note any community-run library of things/ sharing shed initiative operating out of a Council owned site would require a lease and be subject to endorsement by Council. (On a side note, we hope to hear soon about whether we are successful on our grant application to set up the Sharing Shed in Moonee Valley, alongside our pilot at Dwell, Ascot Vale.) The Agenda containing the above resolutions, and the report (Attachment A, referred to above) are available in the Council Meetings page for its upcoming 12 November 2019 meeting: https://www.mvcc.vic.gov.au/councilmeetings
