24.01.2022 I have been struggling with vicarious trauma (VT) due to a current project (memoir including war). At the moment I am just fine but I have been going along during the project a bit like a roller coaster. I know it is all about reading the signs *before* the VT takes a hold and starts impacting your life too much. I have a sensitive loved one who brought me through my last bout, and enabled me to see clearly again, take a day's break to recover and get strong again and, impor...tantly, work out the structural plan for the book that had been troubling me 24/7. I also have a volunteer 'mentor' (because I asked for one a while ago, when I started feeling the strain of this project) but haven't had to ring her yet, only because I had my helpful husband on hand. But I know I've still got that mentor for support if I need her. If you are engaged in a traumatic editing or writing job, make sure you organise a network of supportive people around you, specific to the trauma you may suffer as part of that job. It is a life-saver. See more

15.01.2022 Interesting, about the treatment of trauma/PTSD.

13.01.2022 Re vicarious trauma when dealing with people who are grieving (whether they are your own friends/family, or people you work with as a writer, editor or counsellor): I am privileged to have met the author of this insightful article - about working/being with grieving people and how to do it well, and self-care for those who care about others to prevent or manage vicarious trauma . He is also a member of Life Stories Australia. Importantly, he talks about self-care and what can happen if you don't do it.

13.01.2022 Writers of memoir, autobiography, novels, poetry... This applies to all writers with disabilities whose goal it is to finish their book and self-publish.
