25.01.2022 #alwayswasalwayswillbe #NAIDOC2020 We are taking this opportunity during NAIDOC week to show our continual respect and appreciation for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the oldest continuing culture in the world. Many of you may know that we are named after the Irukandji jellyfish, a highly venomous and potentially deadly jellyfish from the waters of North Queensland. But what is the Irukandji jellyfish named after? Irukandji country is found in Far Nor...th Queensland, now known as Yirrganydji. In 1952, while studying the jellyfish, scientist Dr Hugo Flecker explained "It is the name of an aboriginal tribe which formerly inhabited the coastal region between the Mowbray River to the north and the Trinity Inlet around Cairns to the south. Most of the recorded victims were stung in this region (http://bioweb.uwlax.edu//s20/lyons_kels/classification.htm) More information about Yirrganydji culture and history can be found here https://www.cairns.qld.gov.au//first-people/culture-history This beautiful artwork by Mundejah depicts the Irukandji jellyfish story and was found here http://dawulwuru.com.au//0360/2666/Yirrganydji_Plan_Online See more

25.01.2022 It looked like she had already passed away when we rescued her.... so wonderful to see her beginning to flourish!

23.01.2022 These parents had a very creative way of convincing little Oliver to give up his dummies. This little shark lover decided to give them to the baby sharks! Here he is feeding the babies, and with his precious gift... Obviously we didn’t keep them and his Mum took them away to be disposed of responsibly but we were happy to play along. When it comes to parenting sometimes you gotta get creative! #babysharks #sharklovers #protectwhatyoulove #irukandji

20.01.2022 #alwayswasalwayswillbe #NAIDOC2020 Further to our NAIDOC week celebrations here at Irukandji, we recommend checking out this video put together by the team at Worimi Conservation Lands which explains the importance of these lands in their culture. "The most visible cultural material present in the WCL is the extensive shell deposits called middens. These sites are dominated by pipi shell and some also contain mud whelk and cockle shells. Middens can also contain stone artefacts from tool making and bird, fish and animal bone" (https://worimiconservationlands.com/cultural-sites-2/) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zWWD-OT9kA&feature=youtu.be

02.01.2022 Hey everyone! Just a quick reminder about our Covid policy and procedures to keep us all safe these holidays! COVID-19 UPDATE Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters is located in regional NSW (not Greater Sydney) and we are operating under NSW laws for our region. These include: ... -limiting our numbers to accommodate for social distancing (1 person per 2sq metres in an outdoor venue) -requiring check-ins via the NSW Service app (or via our google forms for those who don't have the app) -checking locations of visitors to ensure they aren't located in a hotspot -recommending bookings for all visitors so we can track our numbers -offering hand sanitising and hand washing stations -sanitising our communal equipment like wetsuits and feeding sticks -masks are not compulsory when outdoors in regional NSW We are doing our best to keep offering a great experience for everyone whilst keeping our visitors safe, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as the situation continues to change. Have a great holiday season and we hope to see you soon! See more
