17.01.2022 Active and Creative Kids 2021 Hockey caters for all ages and levels of ability TRY IT OUT: Everyone from young children to older adults can play hockey.... With five clubs in the Sutherland Shire and around 1000 players, the Sydney South Hockey Association is open to everyone. Players range in age from five to mid-70s and the game offers something for all levels of ability. Marketing director Scott Tully said whether it's "just for fun" or based on a desire to one day represent Australia, the association has it covered. "Hockey is a game that suits all levels and our players reflect that," Mr Tully said. "We have had many kids start as five-year-olds playing local hockey who are now NSW representative players." He said hockey was a "friendly game" that allowed children to learn new skills. "Hockey gets kids out of the home, away from devices and into a friendly and healthy environment," he said. "The hockey community is relatively small, compared to some sports, which means people know each other and are happy to help each other. "We regularly see coaches helping to develop kids and their skills whether they play for the same club or a different one." Sydney South Hockey Association is the oldest continually running association in Sydney with clubs dating back to the 1950s and 60s. It offers the opportunity for players to participate at higher levels and fields junior, open age and masters team in Hockey NSW state championships. "These provide players a great opportunity to play with a different group of people to their club teams while also enabling them to visit and play in different towns across NSW," Mr Tully said. "Hockey is a strong sport in country NSW and our representative teams regularly travel to towns such as Bathurst and Newcastle. "By playing representative hockey, our best players are regularly selected to represent NSW at Australian championships." And those who think hockey is a dangerous game can rest assured that's not the case. Mr Tully said it was actually safer than many other sports. "It is a smooth flowing game that doesn't involve the stop/start of other games that can lead to ankle and knee injuries, while rough physical contact between players is not part of the game," he said. "Our younger players use soft, age-specific balls which minimise the risk of injury and the game's rules are designed to keep everyone safe." Registration for the 2021 season opens online in early February with the season starting in late March.

04.01.2022 Don't forget U11-U13s Training on Sundays Last week was our first Tomahawk Academy...our focus was on dribbling with vision and learning to eliminate players by stepping and moving. We practiced our aerial skills on for stick and reverse stick, we learnt how to do injections and we perfected our one touch scoring movements into the goal as we run from middle circle towards the right post.

04.01.2022 Reps Sydney South Hockey Association Representative Hockey Flyer FAQ’s... What is REP Hockey? This is the opportunity for any keen hockey player to learn a little more about themselves as hockey players and the game of hockey. You will make new friends and you will become better friends with the people who you already play with. Instead of playing for your club you play for your Association. It is the first step in the pathway to becoming a hockey player representing your state and Country. If you choose.. Otherwise it is the first time you will get to play hockey that is fun and the focus is on enjoying the company of new like minded people. Where do we go? We travel to places such as Canberra, Orange, Grafton, Wagga and Lismore for State Championships that are held over 3 days. We also travel to places closer to home for 1 day carnivals.Families really enjoy the trips as they get to spend time with each other. In the last 8 years that I have been involved with rep hockey there is not anywhere that I have not been...which I am very grateful for. What do I get from this experience: I make new friends,I learn how to play better hockey, I develop a better sense of the player I want to become,I get to see more of my beautiful state, i get some time off school, I meet new people.. Carnivals: Are the best part of this experience, the travel, the scout camp, the train to Wagga, and the conversations over great coffee and rolls at Moorebank. This is where the fun is. How much does it cost? You pay for you players Accommodation (Girls stay as team, Boys do not) Travel (if the team travels together in the past we have caught a train and bus) Food (if team travels together) Entry to Championships Field hire at Championships HNSW fee for championships Uniform (shirts) hire You also pay for the officials who travel/ The coaches, managers and umpires have their cost subsidised which comes from the players. The Umpires get an extra payment for their time umpiring which the player pay for For each of the Carnivals the players pay entry fee and umpire hire. This is usually approximately $50-$75 per player This varies depending on where you are going fo
